I've been impressed with the well-thought out products coming from this relatively small company in the small appliance industry. Their Swiss designers have the leading edge technology in coffee makers and the CoffeeTEC is the latest innovation. Coffee is brewed 10 cups in under 8 minutes, and that's fast. The idea is to have the fresh coffee exposed to hot water for the minimum amount of time, so flavor is extracted without extracting the bitter parts of coffee flavor. CoffeeTEC does this really well. A special 3-5 cup brewing selector makes it possible to brew a perfect small pot of coffee. The coffee goes directly into a stainless steel vacuum carafe, and after removing and sealing the pot the coffee stays hot for hours but never gets heated over and over again as in a traditional hot plate coffee maker. The Auto Cappuccino feature is a genuine plus for those of us who want some frothy milk with our coffee, it turns cold milk into hot milk and froth in seconds. Since all the works are outside of the coffee maker, it's easy to clean and to remove the milk container for refrigerator storage. This is a winner in the category of latest coffee technology.

I own two of these machines and love them. Probably not for those who take their coffee and it's preparation extremely seriously. It is very simple to use and makes a very good cup of coffee and the best hot chocolate. The steaming apparatus must be kept very clean otherwise it doesn't froth but never fails to deliver steamed milk. The only negative I have found is customer service. The woman I spoke to was rude and unhelpful when I tried to find out why the milk didn't froth. I had problems with one machine but not the other and found through trial and error, that water quality, and milk quality probably made the difference. For me though, it is worth the trouble.

I have this thing about buying what I think are well designed coffee machines. Last Xmas I saw this in a Kitchen Kapers store and had to add it to my collection, much to my wife's dismay about owning yet another machine. After 10 months we both love the coffee qualtiy, the length of time it stays hot in the carafe, and the convenient frothing system. The latter however, is no match for the wonderful steamed milk produced by my other loved expresso machine by Solis.
I had problems with the unit, though the Capresso staff were helpful, unlike the other review comment. The auto timer feature failed and the unit had to be sent back for replacement. Then the replacement unit arrived with severe UPS damage. Half the plastic case was smashed. Capresso promptly sent another unit out (arrived in one day) and a UPS call to pick up the broken unit. So I can commend the Capresso service staff for their prompt and courteous response to my frantic calls. Overall a well designed, sleek looking, quality performer.

Most people will shy away from cappuccino makers, fearing that they are too complicated to use. Instead, we turn to "instant" cappuccino, which can never be as good as the real thing. While other systems might be overly complicated, this machine maintains ease of use without compromising quality. It is also extremely easy to care for. It is also good for those of us who want to savor the pot of coffee at our own pace, as the machine keeps the coffee hot and fresh (no warmed-up stale coffee here). A great gift for coffee lovers.

This is a fine, easy to use, machine that I'm really enjoying having in my kitchen. I had never used a milk-steamer before, and found the idea a little intimidating. But the process is really quite painless, and now I'm wondering why I did without it so long (even my java-phobic bride is enjoying homemade hot chocolate thanks to the steamer).
Anyone who enjoys having a pot of coffee on-call throughout a morning should avoid glass pots like a cliché and instead use a thermal carafe like this one. Not only does it keep coffee steaming hot without constant re-heating, but the wide top and easy-off lid make for easy clean up when you're done.
The coffeemaker is elegantly designed, seems relatively sturdy, and looks nice on a countertop. Plus, it's fast, fairly quiet, and -- as I said -- easy to clean.
For someone like me who just wants to enjoy coffee without trying to become a home barista ('professional maker of complex espresso drinks'), this is as much machine as I think I'll need ... at least until the one with the built-in burr grinder arrives.

I would strongly discourage anyone from buying the Capresso 471-01. The workmanship is very poor compared to Capresso's top lines, or other less expensive competitors such as Krups. It requires constant disassembly and cleaning (which is nearly impossible due to design flaws), and the coffee, if a full pot is made, is terrible! You can't fill the grounds basket with sufficient grounds to make a full pot any stronger than weak tea. If you do, the grounds overflow and clog the drip catch valve and it floods coffee and grounds all over the countertop. The steamer is very, very poorly designed and it is both difficult to operate without burning your hands, and also requires disassembly and cleaning with each and every use. If you want to make 3-5 cups of straight drip coffee, it's fine, but you can do that quite well with a ... Krups, and you won't have to spend all your time cleaning the damned thing. I am very upset with having spent ... more than I needed to and not getting a working steamer. The problem with buying it at Amazon, though I am an Amazon fan, is once it's used you can't return it (as you can with most department stores) so I am stuck with it. Won't make that mistake twice!

This coffee machine combines brew-through the lid technology, stainless steel thermal carafe, and a detachable milk frother. We use the frother just as frequently for making quick hot chocolate drinks from chocolate milk. The coffee brewer is superior and so is the well-designed stainless steel carafe. Capresso is the leading edge in coffee maker design and has an outstanding customer service department. We just were in such a hurry to use our new machine we didn't bother reading the instructions, so we ended up calling the toll free number twice and each time we were treated courteously and efficiently. We got the impression that this is a small enough company that still cares about it's customers. This machine is a winner and we are now giving them as gifts.

This is the second review I have written for this product (Please see the review directly below this one by "bookdeep"). I am pleased to report that we now LOVE this machine, ever since we discovered the "trick," and I am writing again to try and rectify the embarrasingly harsh review that I sent before. As I said in the first review, the coffee machine works fine: it makes a great cup of coffee quickly and efficiently, and it is easy to clean. Initially, we had some difficulty with the frothing mechanism; however, the solution turned out to be very simple. In order to start the steaming/frothing mechanism, there is a large dial that must be turned one-quarter turn from "Twelve O'Clock" (Steam Off) to "Three O'Clock" (Steam On). We discovered that when you turn the dial to the Steam On position you have to bear down on the dial a tiny, tiny bit: maybe the dial would actually go to 3:01 on the clock face, maybe even less. When we do that, the frothing starts immediately, every time. It seems that our trouble was that we were a little too delicate turning the dial. Note that this "overturning" is very slight: we wouldn't want anyone to damage the machine. I wish that I could take back the previous review because that low rating will have an affect on the average for this product, but I cannot. I hope that writing to correct our error will help others who may consider this machine. Please note, that in spite of the brand name "Capresso" this is not an Espresso machine; it is a coffee maker with a frothing mechanism, which works amazingly well now that we know the trick. If this is the combination that you are looking for, then we cannot recommend this machine highly enough--it does do both of these jobs very well. And now that you know the trick, maybe there will be fewer frustrated, and more happy, coffee drinkers like us.

We purchased this machine for two reasons: 1)it is a coffe maker that can make up to 10 cups, and it has an automatic timer; and 2)it can froth chocolate milk, so that we can make something like a Coffee Mocha. The coffee machine works fine: we have no problem with the timer or the quality of the coffee brewed. But this machine is supposed to do both of the jobs that we purchased it for. The frothing mechanism is inconsistent; sometimes we have to wait several minutes before the pump kicks in and starts spurting out the frothed milk. Sometimes we have to turn it off and then back on to get it to start at all. In addition, there are 4 or 5 small pieces involved in the frothing process that have to click together perfectly in order to make a complete seal that allows the frothing to occur. If any single joint is not tight--no frothing occurs. The cleaning process is relatively easy--in spite of the fact that there are so many pieces to clean. And we have to admit that when the frothing does occur, or finally occurs, it does a very nice job. Overall, however, we give this machine a low rating because we believe that we paid for a machine that is supposed to do everything that it claims it will. Paying this much money for a good coffee machine is not reasonable when it is also supposed to froth milk quickly and efficiently, but does not do so.

We chose this machine as a Mother's Day gift (I know - nothing with power cords!) and it's turned out to be one of our best purchases ever. It brews quickly, the coffee tastes great and the removable water container makes it easy to fill. I really like the thermal carafe - it will keep a pot of coffee hot for several hours and warm enough to drink for a few more. The frother is amazing - it's also quick (use it immediately after you finish brewing or anytime after) and effective. The only problem we've had was once, after disassembling the frother for cleaning, we didn't get the plug back firmly into the "milk valve" so the next time we used the frother it didn't work! Just pushed the plug into the valve body firmly and we were off again. Like I said - a great machine that we're completely happy with.

I purchased this coffee maker after intense review of many machines. I had finally decided on it, when I read the harsh review of an amazon customer. I almost did not buy this machine, due to that review, however I did go ahead. I am so happy that I did, and I am so glad to see the retraction from that same customer. We LOVE this machine. We are not espresso drinkers but love latte type drinks! This machine pleases everyone! My kids love frothy hot chocolate, and Im enjoying coffee more than ever and saving so much money on fancy coffee house drinks! Important to clean the frothing mechanism each time, it seems like it could get clogged easy if not well cared for. The coffee is awesome on this machine and I love that it has no burner to overcook coffee. Be sure to get all the parts together super tight on the frothing mechanism. I also experienced the same problem as previous customer stated regarding frothing dial, yes, give that frothing dial a "slightly" firm turn. My 8 year old taught me that! I was concerned about buying a coffee maker for this much $$$. But this product is worth every penny! Enjoy!

I have tried several "stand alone" milk frothers that can't hold a candle to this machine. Unlike others, whole milk works just fine. The coffee is great and stays hot in the unbreakable carafe. However, Capresso's philosophy is a warming base ruins coffee, so if you're used to it staying on a heated base, you may not like it.

I bought this machine with some trepidation after reading the reviews. It was expensive and seemed like I could have problems with it. I have had it for three months now and have only great things to say about it. The frother works perfectly and cleaning up the frothing pieces is very simple. I also made sure to get the free extra parts from Capresso so I have them on hand in case something happens to the loose parts. I love having the thermal pot and no smell of burnt coffee in the air. It is also very easy to set the timer-unlike my old Krups. It is the fastest coffee machine I have ever owned and it makes a great cup. I would recommend this machine to anyone who buys a latte each morning. I carry mine with me.

I wanted a home coffee brewer that could brew something more akin to the stronger coffees found at Starbucks or Peets, but had little luck with standard home coffee makers. If I added more coffee, the brew was too bitter. I hoped I could come closer with this machine, and I have. The initial problem, as described in the December 1, 2000 review by 4winns, is that a full pot brewed in accordance with the instructions does indeed taste like weak tea. The reason is that the included goldtone filter only accommodates about 9 to 10 level tablespoons of ground coffee (their included scoop holds one tablespoon) which produces a weak full pot. The instructions note, however, that if you want to make stronger coffee you need to use paper filters, which are pretty cheap. I bought some unbleached number 4 filters, put in 18-20 level tablespoons and, YOW, great coffee. No spill, no mess. In addition, the frother worked precisely as advertised, and I found the cleanup to be very quick and easy. Anybody who has trouble rinsing off those few small parts has bigger problems in life than making coffee.

My first review EVER..and this product brought me out of complacency. It works perfectly and is easy to maintain. I find coffer filters preferrable to rinsing out the basket and does not require as much coffee as indicated to brew a perfect cup and I drink a lot of coffee. The frother works like a charm and once you master the regulating of the "froth" knob you can tinker with the temperature a bit. I simply keep a glass of clear cold water with the flexible siphoning hose (used to insert in a small carton of milk) and cut to the right length sitting by the machine. After I froth to my hearts content and return the milk container to the frig, I simply attach the waiting tube-in-water to the end of the valve and turn on the steam to clean the byways and highways of its little system. Voilla, I have hardly missed a sip in the process. I read all the reviews carefully before making this purchase and was waiting with some trepidation, but, what a pleasent surprise. Buy and enjoy. jls

This is an excellent product - I've been delighted with the great coffee; BUT - the frother is superb too! Used it now for lattes, cappuchinos, hot chocolate and chai tea. Had a hiccup with the first 2-3 frothing attempts; called cust support and received quick and courteous support, and I think problem was my misdoing. The small parts and pieces of the frother concerned me when I looked at the unit at the gourmet cook shop, but no worry - it's simple and works wonderfully, is also easy to clean. Some of the other reviews give good tips too, on frothing and cleaning. I've used it 6 months and it's still perfect!

after much reading and hand wringing (did i really want a $ coffee maker?) i took the plunge and bought a coffeetec. have read the reviews and occasional frustrations with the frother. i felt confident i could handle it...
on the up side, the machine makes great coffee. i tend to be a bit on the fussy side about my coffee and was very happy with what i got.
but... my biggest complaint is that the carafe did not do a good job of keeping the coffee hot. before buying this machine my method was to use a plunge (press) pot and transfer to a stainless thermos. that has always worked fine and i expected good results from a machine they say 'keeps coffee hot for 5 hours'. not quite. if the carafe was not completely full it stayed hot for perhaps 1.5 or so. not nearly so good as my thermos, so why not buy a good drip machine and transfer to a termos myself, saving $ in the procsss?
complaint #2 is the frother. no problem with fitting the parts or turning the dial, my problem was that a) it gave up steaming too quickly, b)it spat a lot of water into the milk. the adjuster they provide is a joke. like the carafe, a nice idea but not as good as one might expect for the bucks.
net result, i sadly determined it needed to go back. i am replacing it with a regular glasss carafe drip machine and will just transfer coffee to the thermos. no coffee sitting on a hot plate for me!

We recently bought the CoffeeTec after lots of researching to decide whether this was the way to have a coffee maker, plus the milk steamer without having to get 2 machines or more. Despite some less-than-glowing reviews from various places, I decided to go for it since it is the ideal combo for what we wanted to drink. We have had no problems with it so far. The carafe keeps coffee reasonably hot for awhile, (once it has cooled it is always easy to pop some into the microwave). All of the electronic parts work fine, although I have discovered that sometimes I have to make sure the on button actually clicks when pressed. It brews coffee fast, and you might want to experiment with the amount of coffee, and different grinds you use to get your preferred strength. It is not too hard to clean, the steamer parts can be placed into a small cup of water and a little steam shot through the nozzle to clean it after use. I think my favorite features of this machine are the steamer, the lift-out water container (no spills), and the stainless steel carafe (no breaking). It also came with a set-up video, which was helpful, and an extra set of steamer parts

I'd give it two stars, but for the price and the poor job the thermal carafe does keeping the coffee hot. I normally make about 6 cups in the morning. After 20-30 minutes the coffee is not even drinkably warm. Frothing feature works, but it's more trouble than it's worth. Capresso says it's not aware of the thermal carafe problem, which I do not believe (see epinions.com) and will not exchange the machine for a different model. They said they would send me a new carafe, though I don't think that a new poorly designed carafe that doesn't live up to its manufacturer's claim (hot coffee for 4 hours) will solve the problem. I use a Cuisinart thermal carafe machine now (99.00). I set it to make 6 cups at 5:30AM, and it is piping hot, even if I don't drink it until 7 or 8 AM.

This is overpriced junk. The cafafe is pure garbadge. If you make 10 cups of coffee it will keep the coffee warm for about 10 minutes - providing you don't sneek a cup or two - then it'll cool down to undrinkable in about 5 minutes. If you make 4 cups or less, then you'll have to drink it right away!

It should go without saying that the most important goal of a coffee maker is to make good coffee. This unit meets that goal -- after experimenting with filter choices and the amount of coffee, I was able to get this machine to make an excellent cup of coffee. This was not true of my previous Krups machine, which always produced coffee inferior to what I could get at [other coffee shops].
On the plus side, this unit features a vacuum caraffe, which eliminates the need for a heating plate, and avoids having the coffee bitterly cooked over time. Some other reviews say the caraffe doesn't keep the coffee warm. I can only guess that they are using a broken caraffe. Mine keeps coffee hot for longer than advertised -- it's still acceptably hot even after six hours.
Both a plus and a minus is the unit's speed -- it does makes a pot of coffee very quickly. However, the water has contact with the grounds for a shorter amount of time, so you need to use more grounds to get the same strength coffee. I found that I have to use almost twice as much coffee grounds as my old Krups to get the same strength coffee. If you're using expensive beans, this is a significant factor.
The frother does a great job. I also noticed some other reviews which said it cut out before frothing enough milk. It's possible that they didn't follow the instructions for priming the frother before its first use. I have had no problems at all with frothing.
Cleanup is where the design falls a little short. The caraffe has a narrow opening, which makes it very difficult to clean. The small parts of the frother all snap apart easily for cleaning, but I can't help but think that over time, all the snapping and unsnapping will eventually loosen up the connections, and it will no longer work efficiently. They do provide a couple of spare controller pieces, but they don't provide spares for the other small parts. I think that in a year or two, I might have to order replacements for these frothing pieces.
Overall, an excellent product. It makes really good coffee, which is the most important thing. It goes through beans faster, but in the big picture, that's a small price to pay for good coffee.

I researched and read reviews for weeks before deciding what machine to buy and I finally settled on the Capresso 471.02 CoffeeTEC. I was worried about some of the reviews that I had read and after making my first latte within 30 minutes of taking it out of the box I just had to write a review and comment. I placed the machine on my counter and popped in the brief but educational video. From there I made a latte!
One of the comments is that the carafe's opening is too narrow for cleaning. I wash my dishes with one of those sponges on a handle so it was no problem and this carafe's opening is more than twice as big as a typical thermos opening! There is no plastic taste to the coffee and the frother does a phenomenal job. I have been frothing milk with my Krups cappucino maker for six years and I thought I was pretty good at it - well - I'm a changed person! I'm so happy with this machine that I have no regrets about it's price. Buy with confidence!

It's 11:05am and I just poured myself a cup from the 7:45am brew. Still hot. Very hot. Hot enough that the mug was burning my hand and I had to set the it down. Very impressive.
After a great deal of research and three machines in the last 2 weeks I settled this beauty, and it is a very handsome machine. Other reviews have covered how great the coffee is, so let me speak to a couple random things that stuck out for me.
-The carafe is amazing. Heavy, sturdy, beautiful, functional, no drip pouring, keeps coffee hot for much longer than my skeptical mind expected.
-If you can put together 4 lego pieces you can assemble the frother - very easy. Perfect froth on my first try.
-The parts on my machines appear to be very well made, and very durable, and replacements are provided.
-Machine is very handsome, and parts are well engineered for a tight fit.
-Ingenius water resivoir design with seperate water supplies (but you only fill one container) for coffee and frother.
-Cleanup on frother parts is under 30 seconds.
-Depending on your taste, machine will probably require more than the suggested grounds per coffee serving amount.
I expect to pay a premium for any device (car, appliance, home) that I end up being thrilled with - this is no exception. Buy this guy with confidence.

We've been using our new Capresso CoffeeTEC 10-cup coffeemaker for roughly 30 days. We are impressed. Though priced ...higher than many coffeemakers - it is worth the extra expense. We have owned an array of coffeemakers including most recently a Krups w/carafe. The first notable plus is the overall manufactured quality of the total unit. Though mostly plastic, like all coffeemakers, the moving parts appear and feel substantial - a near commercial grade level. You get the sense this device will last a long time. The next plus is the carafe. Of the several carafes we've owned, the Capresso carafe is the best. And the carafe does hold the coffee hot for at least as long as the marketing materials suggest. The next plus is such a simple matter but it's made a difference - the brewing water reservoir is a separate unit which you remove from the maker, fill with water and return to its position. No more trying to pour water into the maker at 6am and hitting the counter top! Regards the most important demand, the Capresso DOES make an excellent cup of coffee. Finally, the valuable unique feature is, of course, the FrothXpress. If you like hot frothed milk w/your coffee - there is no better coffeemaker on the market anywhere near this price point. Though the "plumbing" for the frother is unusual, we've found it easy to assemble/disassemble and clean. I strongly suggest that you read the directions on this function and experiment a bit. It can be a little touchy but once you understand the frother specifics, it works great. The only negatives from our perspective are: [1] the included gold coffee filter is cheap - but easily replaced, and [2] the FrothXpress utility cycles on and off post brewing [does not stay on constantly, which makes sense] and seemingly is never ready to perform when I'm ready for my second cup. So, I spend a few more minutes each morning in the kitchen. Once again, we rate this coffeemaker as EXCELLENT for its own features and by comparison to other manufacturers.

After months of reading reviews and researching, I purchased the Capresso CoffeeTEC. I would consider myself an intermediate with regard to "coffee experience". Before purchasing the Capresso, I owned an Oster electric drip, for several years. During this time, I studied more about coffee and was ready to make a move up to a better quality machine.
The coffee maker brews EXCELLENT hot coffee. However, the thermal carafe does not do a great job in keeping the coffee hot. After about 2 hours the coffee went from "very hot" to a "tolerable hot"; I would imagine if it say another hour it would have been warm. Due to my extensive research, I was expecting this. If you want to maximize the duration of the temperature, I would recommend that you heat the thermal carafe by rinsing very hot water inside and outside, before brewing.
The milk frother is a "nice to have", but if I had a choice I would rather not have it. It requires quite a bit of work to keep clean. Unfortunately, if you want to reap the benefits of the CoffeeTEC's brewing technology, you have to purchase this one!

I experienced several problems with the operation of the FrothXpress system, despite following all the cleaning & operating instructions provided. Hot whipped milk, steaming with the aroma of fresh french roast coffee transports me, if only momentarily, onto the Champs de Elysses in Paris. After my first sip, I open my eyes and realize I am only in Washington but, one can dream and appreciate the efficiency of this machine. It is quiet when brewing, easy to clean, easily programmable, and makes a delicious cup of coffee!! I highly recommend this coffee machine.

We have made *LOTS* of pots of coffee with the Capresso CoffeeTEC for months without any problems. It gives excellent coffee quickly, and without that "just burned" flavor other machines feature. We tried the included gold filter, but prefer using Melitta #4 brown filters. Possibly we are extremely picky as to what good coffee should taste like.
I might mention that we always set the 3-5 cup brewing dial to brew "slowly" to give the water more contact time with the grounds no matter how much water we use. Writing "slowly" seems odd, however, because it makes ten cups of coffee faster than any other non-restaurant machine we have ever used. Turn the knob and push the button, and out comes brown gold.
We do not use the FrothXpress system, and find it convenient to ignore. We wanted great coffee, and that is what we got. If we plan to keep a pot available all day we just preheat the carafe with boiling water. Of course, you do have to close the carafe lid to keep the heat in. :} It will not get easier than this until the Jetson's come of age.
I have no hesitation recommending this product for those who crave excellent coffee at home, even at its price. In reading the comments by people who complain the coffee is not hot enough, it appears they are unwilling to follow the simple English directions, which seems a tragedy. A hot cup of coffee is like a warm friend, and this machine never disappoints. It sure beats a drive-thru. You must use excellent coffee to get a good cup though. Possibly unsatisfied buyers used cheap stuff? There is nothing better at this price on the market.
Clean up is simple, and the machine fits nicely next to our microwave. What am I saying? We use this machine more than our microwave!

After spending a few weeks researching various coffee makers and reading numerous reviews and online user reports, I settled on the Capresso CoffeeTEC due to its features and the theory behind how it brews coffee - reduced aeration to hold flavor (vacuum sealed carafe), no burner to bake the bean and increase acidity, and 190+ degree water dispensed into the brewing basket, which is very hot for a coffee maker!
I have to admit, I was nervous. I saw two general complaints that were common from online user reports. 1) The carafe did not maintain the water temperature, and 2) the frother ceased to work. A few comments on these:
Thermal carafe: I have no clue how anyone can be having a problem with this carafe, unless there's a problem with the heat of the water entering the carafe or in how they're storing the coffee after it brews (like, in the refrigerator, perhaps).
I did some tests on the carafe after getting my CoffeeTEC. The carafe was at room temperature (not pre-heated, as some suggest) when doing this test. Immediately after brewing straight water with the carafe in the closed position, I measured the water temperature at 189.3f using a digital thermometer. I closed the carafe and let it sit for exactly one hour then measured the water at 182.1f, a drop of only about 7f, which is fantastic! Now, I also brewed a full pot of straight water on my now-replaced Mr. Coffee, which sat on a hot burner during the brew process. After brewing, the water temperature was exactly 178f. So, after one hour in the thermal carafe with no burner contact, the Capresso water was hotter than the Mr. Coffee immediately after brewing. Very impressive results!
Frothing problem: I have noticed that the plastic pieces that connect the milk container to the frother do have to be sealed properly for frothing to work. Also, it is necessary to clean the items after frothing; a very simple and quick process. Occasionally my unit will not froth immediately even though the steam would blast in an attempt to froth. This has been very easy to solve. After turning the steam on, I simply press the milk container tightly against the plastic piece that connects it to the frothing nipple. Don't worry if you don't understand this description. You have to own the unit to know the pieces I'm discussing. Just understand that with some minor manual jostling, the milk will flow and froth wonderfully!
Now, as for my assessment of this coffee maker... it is the best coffee maker I have ever owned! I'm knocked-out by the quality of brew I'm getting. Just as good if not better than commercial coffee houses, because I can make it to my specifications!
A few comments on this though... it took a few weeks for me to figure out exactly how to use this coffee maker so it brews to my liking. When I brewed my first cup, I didn't care for it. Keep in mind, this unit brews water quickly through the grind. It extracts flavor and aroma through heat, not prolonged water contact with the bean. As a result, you will have to use more coffee than most coffee makers.
As an example, I used to measure one rounded tablespoon of beans (pre-ground) for every two 5oz cups, then I'd add one extra tablespoon for added body. So, for 20oz of coffee, I'd use three tablespoons of beans. With this coffee maker, I've learned I need to use one tablespoon for each 5oz cup plus one extra for added body. So, for the same 20oz pot of coffee, I use five tablespoons of beans.
Also, the other detail I discovered is, it was necessary to grind the beans finer than I had before. I've started grinding the beans on the Espresso setting of my grinder rather than the automatic drip setting. This made a huge difference on the strength and flavor of the coffee.
So, keep in mind you'll want to play with the quantity and fineness of grind. If you use canned grinds, you have much less leeway. You'll just have to add much more grind, but be careful! Don't add too much or it will overflow the basket. Always adhere to the maximum grind amount Capresso recommends in the documentation.
The coffee maker comes with a gold filter. You may or may not like using the filter; I elected not to use it. The gold filter allows more oil and particulates into the coffee. Some like this; others don't. It makes for an oilier, cloudier brew. Using paper filters, more of the fine particles are filtered out and much of the oil is kept from leaching into the carafe. The coffee is cleaner, clearer and not murky. I prefer using paper, but the preference is highly individualistic. I'd suggest running some tests and decide for yourself.
In the end, I find the coffee to be superb! This coffee maker is a fine-tuned piece of equipment that responds to the subtlest of changes you impart on the brewing process. Change the fineness of the grind or the quantity of beans used and you'll experience a noticeable difference in the outcome of the brew. After I determined the right balance that suits my pallet, all I can say is, "Wow!" The flavor and body is nutty, winy and full, the aftertaste smooth and non-acidic, and the aroma outstanding! I highly recommend this coffee maker.
But, plan to make a number of pots when you first get it with the understanding that many of those pots will probably go down the drain. It'll take some test runs to determine the quantity of coffee you'll want to use, the fineness of grind, and which filter to use. With due diligence, you'll have a splendid coffee maker from which you'll enjoy each day's coffee for years to come, custom made specifically towards your taste.
So, read the other reviews for what they are and keep in mind some of my comments. In my experience, many of the complaints reflect a user who hasn't experimented with the grind quantity and fineness, and hasn't been adventurous enough to work the "piping" when frothing.

Rich, deep coffee .... white, frothy steamed milk .... perfect temperature ..... hot for hours without burning ...... Say goodbye to Starbucks. Its easy to use, good-looking (although a bit bulky on the counter), and it makes an incredibly good cup of coffee. I do agree with some earlier reviewers, however, that if you make less than half a pot the coffee will tend to cool much faster than if the carafe is full.
Wonderful product and well worth the price.

(EVEN THOUGH THEY INCLUDE 2) THEY MUST KNOW THIS IS A PROBLEM IF THEY GIVE YOU AN EXTRA ONE FROM THE GET GO! BUT LIKE I SAID WITH A LOT OF CLEANING & MAINTAINING OF THE FROTHER PARTS AND SOMETIMES JUST ADJUSTING THE WAY THE MILK CONTAINER(THAT IS INCLUDED) SITS, YOU CAN GET GREAT FROTH FOR A NICE CAFFE LATTE! I WOULD THINK FOR $200 YOU WOULD BE ABLE TO GET A FROTHER THAT WORKS WITHOUT YOU DOING SO MUCH WORK - BUT ATLEAST WHEN IT DOES...ITS WORTH IT!

After having this machine for less than two years, it had an electrical problem and I sent it back to the company and for $65 they sent me a new unit. Unfortunately it did not work and customer service after stating we must have a bad electical outlet, sent us another one. It didn't work either and this time I plugged it into my computer plug which is fine as is our kitchen outlet. To get my money back I had to talk to a supervisor, but he didn't call me back. Three phone calls later they finally sent my money back, but still no supervisor called us. I wrote to Mr. Kramm and complained about the shoddy treatment I received from customer service and from the broken units from the repair service. NO RESPONSE from a company that is supposed to depend on word of mouth to buy their very expensive product. Shame on them.

Very hot water makes good coffee, but it doesn't stay hot for 6 hours (more like 2-4 depending on how much milk you add and how hot you like your coffee), particularly if you drink a cup here and there, letting cold air in each time. Still, it's a lot better than burning it on a hot plate for 4 hours.
Milk steamer/frother works but is a little messy. You need a pitcher with a smaller opening on top so less splashes out -- the steam blows into the milk pretty hard (actually, you don't want wimpy steam) and spurts a bit at first, and this causes the milk to splash up.

I bought this extremely expensive coffee maker because it purportedly made better tasting, hotter coffee. Not only does it fail to do that, it's not a well made product. The swing out arm for the coffee basket has broken in three places. This is under gentle usage. The frother works well, but $200 is a bit steep for a coffee maker no better than a $30 Mr. Coffee and a frother. I don't know when I've ever bought anything that was more of a disappointment than this machine.

Loved the coffee and the froth. Easy to use - especially when you watch the video that comes with it. After owning other machines such as Krups where you have to manually froth the milk (and it just bubbles up instead of frothing), I was amazed at the perfect glass of frothed milk it creates as I stand back and watch...it doesn't get much easier than that. I didn't have any problems with milk splashing/spurting out as others have mentioned. I used a normal-sized mug - nothing fancy - and got perfect results. I guess you can tell I'm impressed with this product, as I've just typed a paragraph about froth perfection!

Well worth (...). Makes great coffee, carafe keeps coffee hot, at least for a couple of hours. Brews close to the optimum temperature, around 190 degrees F. Most coffee makers crap out in a year or so. This Capresso keeps going, and it is used at least once per day. The froth-xpress is a really neat touch. Sometimes I use it to froth milk when making espresso with the Gaggia Carezza. Just lazy, I suppose.

After searching intensively for the perfect coffee maker for several weeks, I finally came across the CoffeeTec and decided to purchase it despite some people's complaints about it. These complaints mainly centered around the carafe and its ability to keep the coffee hot and around the frother.
I have now used the CoffeeTec for several weeks and cannot claim any problems with the carafe. The coffee enters it steaming hot and when I pour it into my cup it's still steaming - even after having let it sit in the carafe for a while.
Initially, I did have problems with the frother and couldn't get it to froth at all. All I would get was watered-down hot milk and zero froth. Mind you, the problem had nothing to do with there being "many" parts to the frother. Basically, Capresso has designed the frother parts in such a way that they are easily cleaned and I don't see anything complicated or confusing about re-assembling them since it is obvious where which part goes. The multi-part design is very easy to clean and I don't find that you need any special tools or straigthened paper-clips to do so. All you have to do to keep it clean is to disassemble it right after you use it and briefly rinse it under water. Voila, you are done. Sure, if you let the milk dry and clog the frother, you'll have to do some more work but that doesn't have anything to do with the design rather than with personal laziness.
At any rate, the reason that I couldn't get any froth had to do with the milk I was using. Most of the milk available where I live is 2% and I simply cannot get any froth with it. However, once I switched to 3% milk, I no longer had a problem and the CoffeeTec created beautiful froth.
By the way, I steam milk for four cups of coffee at a time and can keep on steaming for another 8 without ever running out of steam. In fact, after the normal four cups, the water reservoir for the frother has barely used any water at all.
I only have praise for this coffeemaker and although I initially had a lot of concern spending so much money for such a simple device, I am now happy that I did.

Like the others in this forum I was hesitant about spending $200 on a coffee maker, especially when I was not a daily coffee drinker, only a lover of coffee house specialties and fancy flavors. The cost of that high-end taste was killing me, so I decided to switch to a machine that could make it at home.
I read all of the reviews on this site, hoping to find a solid yes or no. Unfortunately, for every rave I found a rant, and I hesitantly decided to go ahead and make the purchase.
I can say after two months of use, this machine is worth its weight in gold. It makes by far the best coffee I have ever tasted, well on par with Starbucks' and Seattle's Best. The unit, though it looks intimidating out of the box, is extremely simple to program, operate, and set up, and makes a perfect pitcher of coffee time after time.
I can't understand any of the complaints of its complexity nor the caraffe's ability to keep coffee hot. The frothXpress attachments are easy to assemble, and the caraffe keeps coffee hot for at least six hours, provided you keep it closed. I can only assume that those who can't make theirs work properly did not watch the included video, which made things quite simple to understand.
The instructions and other reviews say to expiriment with your coffee grinds and strengths to find what you like. I find that Starbuck's coffee makes a perfect cup every time, while I haven't yet found the right measurment for Seattle's Best. Millstone is working quite well also; their flavored coffees are great. What is working for us is one scoop per cup made. Yes, you will use more coffee, but the taste is really worth it.
In short-- BUY THIS MACHINE!! I went from driking one cup a week at home to at least two per day. I've recommended it to my friends and will continue to do so. While the cost is a little high, the rewards will far outweigh the price. I've stopped driking the $2.75 cups altogether.

I purchased this coffeemaker about three months ago. The machine itself is simple to use if one takes the time to read the directions or watch the included video. But the first pot I made turned out undrinkable - weak, vile. After a lot of experimenting (at least ten test pots and seventy-five or more regular morning pots), it now makes very good coffee consistently, and excellent coffee frequently.
It is a responsive machine. The quality of the output coffee is sensitively dependent on initial conditions, unusually so. It requires experimenting. Some important variables to work with include:
1. Grind (i.e. coarse, medium, fine - this machine needs a somewhat finer grind);
2. Quantity of coffee used (this machine needs slightly more than my previous thermal carafe machine);
3. Type of filter (unbleached paper, bleached paper, permanent);
4. Quality and type of coffee;
5. Personal taste.
This is not a comprehensive list of variables (also water quality, size of pot made, etc., etc.). Also, some of my current level of satisfaction may simply stem from me having become used to the coffee made by this machine.
When I first got the machine I tested it using a cheaper brand of whole beans. I used different settings on my grinder until I understood how changing the grind affected the coffee. As an aside, I knew I was making progress in my experiments when the indifferent beans I was using for my test pots started making terrific coffee. The coffee maker was getting the most out of them.
I'm now using a grind halfway between the "medium" and "fine" settings on my grinder (i.e. one-quarter of the way between "medium" and "espresso"). Err on the side of "fine". However, too fine a grind will bring out bitterness and might leave a "dusty" residue in the coffee. I recommend using a burr grinder with this machine (and in general). It is too hard to get the required consistency with a "chopper" type grinder.
Some people may prefer their coffee to have a bit more "bitterness" than I do, in that case this machine might work really well for them as they could use an even finer grind than I do.
My preference is to use unbleached paper filters. Although the unbleached ones may impart a slight "papery" flavor, the white ones (which worked better on my last coffeemaker) seem to let less overall flavor through. I have not tried the included permanent, gold-type, filter.
I have only used the frothing equipment once, it works just fine. The pieces are small, easy to assemble and easy to clean (although you really do want to rinse them immediately after use). Note that the included plastic tumbler holds all the little pieces and that there is a special recess in the body of the machine that holds the tumbler.
So far I am not impressed with the "3-5 cup" button. The company says it is supposed to "make sure that smaller coffee amounts are brewed at the correct temperature." Whatever. The one time I tried it the 3-5 cup button negatively changed the taste and made the coffee bitter. Maybe this could be corrected by coarsening the grind (at the cost of needing to use more coffee, offsetting savings gained from making fewer cups). At any rate, properly using the 3-5 cup button, if there is any point to it, seems to require more work than I have yet done. Note, also, that what this machine considers "3 cups" of coffee will not fill a decent sized mug. If you want two full mugs, you need to make 7 or 8 of these so-called "cups."
Coffee temperature is not an issue. It comes out very hot and stays very hot. The carafe is as good as any, and better than my old Melitta one, at keeping the coffee hot. It is important to keep the lid on the carafe and to close it all the way when not pouring.
This machine is able to produce excellent coffee - the best I have ever made at home and, depending on the quality of the beans used, equal or superior to coffee house coffee. Due to its sensitivity, however, it is still necessary to experiment with a test pot or two every time I want to try a new kind of coffee. It still makes an occasional undrinkable pot, but I would buy it again.

I've been looking at the CoffeeTec for 3 years now and just couldn't bring myself to spending $200 for a coffee machine. Plus, over the time I spent considering this Capresso, it seemed that every glowing review was offset by a negative one.
I had looked at eBay, the Capresso site, and other coffee sites for the best price. By serendipity, I discovered that Amazon had the white CoffeTec at a much lower price than the black model and beat every other site's price by a mile. Being frugal and practical, I yielded on color to get the capability and am SO HAPPY that I did!
First, the white CoffeeTec blends better with my kitchen. Second, it makes fantastic coffee. While I am not a coffee aficionado, I know what I like, and the CoffeeTec delivers a hot cup of coffee with no bitterness. The steel carafe amazingly keeps the coffee warm for a few hours. This is probably heresy for coffee snobs, but I'll zap it in the microwave for 30 secs. to warm it if it's too cool to drink. Third, the latttes are great! Despite having several parts to clean after steaming milk for lattes, the task is not time-consuming or onerous.
I highly recommend this machine -- it's been great for the past month, and I hope it provides great coffee and lattes for years to come. I promise to update this review if the CoffeeTec craps out after a few months of use.

Do not hesitate to spend the money on this coffee maker. It is the best machine we have ever tried (and we have tried a lot of them) in this price range and even a higher price range.
The coffee stays hot for many hours and the brewing is fast. If you use regular grind you will need to use a tad bit more due to the fast brewing time but if you grind use a bit finer grind and you won't need to up the coffee amount.
The frother works great and warming a cup under the steam nozzle makes for a nice bit of 'gourmet' coffee consumption!
I find that I need to use baking soda in the carafe every couple of days to keep that 'thermos' taste from developing but that is the only real maintenance other than simple cleaning.
A great machine and Amazon had the best price on the web!

This coffeemaker is quite convenient and makes the best home-brewed coffee I've ever brewed. It brews the coffee to a perfect drinking temperature. I use the FrothXpress for a nice change of pace. It quickly heats milk to an acceptable temperature not appreciably reducing the coffee temperature. Make sure you froth the milk into your empty drinking cup first or you will clean up splattered milk on the maker body. Cleanup is easy, with most pieces removable and dishwasher safe. The Froth XPress cleanup is quite easy as well.
This is for the serious coffee drinker. You can save $30 by getting the coffee maker only Capresso model. However, the FrothXpress makes a great cup of hot chocolate as well as some great au laits. The stainless steel vacuum insulated pot keeps the great flavor and temperature of the coffee for as long as I need it. I have used this coffee maker for almost 18 months with no problems whatsoever. However, I never use the Auto feature as some who are experiencing leaks do. It takes 5 minutes to brew a pot, so why bother?

Could not be more pleased with the Capresso coffeemaker, which we have had for two months. After years with the typical Krups/Cuisanart-level machines we've been amazed at the difference a good coffee maker can make. Having a thermos container versus a burner to keep the coffee hot makes a big difference in the quality of the second and third cups of coffee. The milk steamer/frother works quite well; the machine is easy to use. The removeable water container is a joy--no more water poured from a lousy carafe into the machine or, rather, dripped all over the counter.
The only adjustment we've had to make is that the machine works fast and therefore requires, for our tastes, a finer grind and/or bit more coffee per pot.

We first bought this machine ~2001, and have had to send it back for service 3 times at a charge of ~$60 each. It works great, but eventually (18-24 months) it begins to leak water, sometimes from the gasket where the removable reservior connects to the body of the machine, and sometimes from the interior of the machine. In the latter case we were told by the company that the pressures that build up inside the machine (due to the steaming functions, I suppose) can eventually create leaks in the "plumbing". Most recently, the electronics have gone out and we do not plan to pay another sixty bucks for "service" but are replacing it with a less complicated model. If you have an espreso machine, you can steam with that, and it does a better job anyway. This is a terrific coffee maker at a fair initial price, but expect to pay another $60 every couple of years to keep it working.

I bought this to replace a Cuisinart that I was never happy with and wanted a carafe style coffee-maker. I am very pleased with how hot it keeps the coffee, the coffee seems to be stronger and more flavorful than any I've ever made before in traditional coffee-makers. It is well-made and I find the steamed milk dispenser easy to use, the kids love it when I make hot chocolate with it as it is just the right temperature for them. The only note is you have to be very careful to have the rubber pieces fit together just right for the steamer to work correctly, or you might get a steamy mess.

This coffeemaker does all the things it should do and none of the things it shouldn't do. Even the fact that the spout doesn't dribble when pouring, perhaps a minor consideration for some, is rare and fantastic. That the coffee keeps warm, without using energy and reheating is great. The frother makes a wonderful less dense cup of coffee for morning drinking. On a scale of 1 to 10 This coffeemaker is a 10. If it were a 12 cup maker it would be an 11. We plan to give one to my daughter as a Christmas gift.

It makes the best coffee I've ever had. The carafe works perfectly and keeps the coffee hot, and at nearly peak flavor, for hours. Those few reviewers who say that it doesn't keep the coffee hot simply have a carafe with a broken vaccuum seal.
I'm bothering to write a review because I had a problem with the machine, as some others have: the steamer stopped working properly, and the water tank was leaking. But at that point my experience was totally different from that of other posters who have complained about problems with the equipment and Capresso customer service. Get this: we had no warranty information on the machine, having received it 2nd-hand. Still, when my wife called their customer service, with no questions asked we were sent a pre-paid UPS label to return the unit. I put it in a UPS box on a Monday morning. On Wednesday afternoon---two days later---I received a new machine via UPS. (I know that they first received the machine I sent before sending the replacement because they replaced exactly what I sent, no more, no less; i.e., I sent the machine with just the water tank, none of the other parts, and I got back just a machine with a water tank.) I'm as pleasantly astonished by UPS getting it back and forth so quickly as am by Capresso simply and immediately fixing the problem at no charge.
Maybe Capresso "got the message" about customer service and made some changes. I could be bothered that the machine developed problems in the first place, but hey, things break. The bottom line for me is that it makes PERFECT coffee and, when there was a problem, Capresso took care of it astonishingly well.

Good: makes a great cup of joe in record time
Bad: the extra water in the tank leaks like a seive. Countless times all the water has leaked out over nite.
Ugly: Reset the clock and timer every morning. When timer kicks on b/4 the coffee makes, it screws up the clock.
I guess the good coffee outweighs the bad parts, but its still irritating

I agree with everyone that this makes excellent coffee and froths milk terrifically....but the water leaks out like a sieve after 2 years. I have to take off all removable parts (the carafe, the water reservoir, the milk container, the drain thingee in 2 parts, the gold filter) everytime I make a new pot; turn the entire machine over and remove water that collects under the reservoir. Even after doing this....it still may leak when I brew a new pot!!! What a pain in the neck!! Capresso will repair it for $65.00...hmmmphhhhhhh. Might as well just buy a new machine.

The coffee was perfectly hot, the milk completely frothed. A week or so later and although hot, the coffee isn't as hot, and the milk is barely frothed. I guess I should expect to pay much more than $200 to receive the features I wanted...

It was heaven!! For 2 mos., we had tasty fresh brewed coffee with frothed milk at our finger tips. We were spoiled. But now, 4 mos into the $200.00 plus coffeemaker, it is leaking all over the counter if we try to use the "auto" feature. And worse, the threads on the steam nozzle have eroded and the froth feature can only be used if we literally hold the apparatus together with our fingers! Otherwise the pressure blows the nozzle with a burst of steam, down into the cup below. It is a complete disappointment. I have contacted Capresso and asked for a replacement nozzle. Instead they want me to send the entire coffee maker (leaving me with NOTHING). Very unsatisfactory and for the money, not worth it. I could have spent the $200 on a more reliable machine and frankly, won't buy this brand again.

THe aroma of freah brewed coffee is a sure way to start my day.
The main reason that we purchased this coffeemaker was for the FrothXpress.
I have used a press for years simply because I did not like the coffee from prior coffee makers plus, heated my milk in the microwave and used a small beater to get simi-froth.
THe Capresso makes a really good coffee and as a plus it is easy to prepare and clean.
Now for the frother - the milk goes into a separate container and attaches to a nozzle located on the side of the coffeemaker, you place your mug under the sprout and turn the button and a nice stream of heated milk and froth is poured into you mug.
I have discoved the easiest way to clean the froth part is after I'm finished with my last cup of coffee I empty the milk out of the plastic container, rinse and put fresh water in it and process this through the steamer.

Purchased in 2000- this is the best coffee maker ever. Easy to use and durable. Turns regular Folgers into a Great cup of coffee. Well worth the price.

We've had a Capresso machine before this one, but there were a couple of annoying little plastic parts (the stop-drip lever, for instance), that required replacement a few times. Nonetheless, the actual machine brewed good strong coffee, so we were overall pleased, though we wished the plastics would get a strengthening or something.
Along came this one with the froth attachment -- it's built much more solidly. We'll have owned it for two years this December. We had to return the unit once, within about a year of purchase, because of some internal electrical quirk, and we got a new machine in quick time(Capresso's customer service is excellent). Otherwise, it's stood up to our abuse, and that's a huge thing. We routinely go through four full pots of coffee every single day in our house -- and it can be doubled if we have guests. We are hard on any machine, just due to the amount of use. This machine just keeps on brewing and frothing. The stainless steel carafe is a winner also. And we don't have any problem with the coffee temperature -- it's perfect.
The frothing parts are easily clogged up -- rather than get obsessive about washing every part after every pot, we keep a glass of hot water next to the machine and just keep the parts soaking in the glass, which keeps the milk deposits from setting.
The coffee is good and strong (chewy, if you like it that way) and the frothing attachment will spoil you for coffee any other way. This is a great way to wake up!

I received my Capresso as a gift over 6 years ago and it is still as good as new! I love the auto set and it brews coffee fast and hot! It is easy to clean and the removable water container is an easy way to fill the machine with water. I highly recommend this coffee maker. Capresso is a great company and has replaced parts I needed (new filter and basket I broke) quickly.
Makes a great gift!

Dear loyal capresso customers,
I was just shocked! So I have both a Capresso 2000 and 1500, a very loyal customer as you can see. I love my machines. However, I will never purchase another item from Capresso because of there unreasonable customer service options. First, I spent thousands of dollars on both of my machines, not including all the continuing service products. However, when I called and spoke with Vanessa, she automatically tried to sell me a service option for $225.00! This was before she even knew what was wrong with the machine and when I asked for another option, there was nothing. So, Capresso wants you to pay $225.00 without knowing the problem (so it may cost them $5 to fix). They only offer 3 months guarantee once you pay the $225.00 (not even one year or more). After all I spend with Capresso, they should have the willing and ready funds to make its service department accessible and reasonable. Capresso I am disappointed and concerned for your policy. Point blank - it makes no sense and you have lost a customer. I will never buy from you personally again or a machine for my businesses again! Thanks for nothing!

This review isn't about the taste of the coffee or all the other finer points of this Capresso machine. I am simply addressing the temperature issue several reviewers have mentioned.
I have owned this coffee maker for a couple of years. Let me come right out and say I'm not a coffee drinker. I reach for a Diet Soda every morning. That being said, I have made numerous pots of coffee for my houseguests with the Capresso CoffeeTec. In most cases, by programming it to come on at a certain time. By the time the coffee is brewed, the water would be at room temperature so we can't blame cold water on the problem. I always use room temperature, filtered water anyway. And, I don't think it's that it goes off and sits around for hours before anyone grabs the first cup. If anything, my guests get up before it is ready.
Still, I have always been perplexed by occassional complaints of "lukewarm" coffee. Last time it happened, I paid closer attention and noticed the lid wasn't screwed on tightly. It was actually pretty loose. My educated guess is the heat was escaping through the lid.
Bottom line, make sure the lid is screwed on tightly. Makes sense and it's certainly worth a try!
Happy coffee drinking!

Best coffee maker we've owned, although we don't use the frother. Just makes a great, hot cup of coffee. Easy to use and clean, and the carafe doesnt dribble or leak.
(It may start to leak as others have said after a few years -- but thats been an accepted risk, as its worth it.)

If you are one of those individuals who does not drink pure coffee, this is the machine for you. The froth system is absolutely amazing. Infact, I find it better than what they use at Starbucks. The coffee pot retains heat and flavors for up to 6 hours.
The only drawback with this machine is the initial setup, which can be slightly confusing if you are the type of person who prefers out of the box setup. The setup instructions are quite straight forward, just wished that the layout was modified. There is alot of referring to figures (which happens to be on another page) than the instructions.
great machine overall.

It still makes the best cup of coffee. Over the last 15 years I have tried a series of coffee makers from cheap to expensive, including several by Krups. A friend gave me her old Capresso machine. I liked it so much, that when it died after a year or so, I bought this Capresso 471.
The coffee tastes better and stays hotter longer than my Krups' ever did. I have never had the problem some have mentioned with the carafe not keeping coffee hot enough. Perhaps theirs are defective. It is best to have the lid on the carafe placed properly, the 'button' lined up with the spout though. I like the sturdiness of the stainless carafes, having broken several glass ones in the past.
I also like the removable water tank. It makes for faster filling and easier cleaning. I have had the problem of counter flood occasionally, usually by not insuring that the filter holder was placed properly.
That said, after 3 years the negatives have been: the program switch broke recently, and the coffee carafe construction has given way. (The upper plastic part has gradually separated from the lower stainless part of the carafe over the last year, first causing a dripping problem from the seam and now completely coming apart). I am buying another one because the coffee tastes better than my Krups' (and far better than the Mr. Coffee and Black&Decker which were too weak), and my Krups machines never lasted this long !

I bought this for my GF 2 years ago. It makes good coffee consistantly and she hasn't had a single problem with it. She uses the frother 2-3 times per week with great results. The carafe keeps the coffee hot for 3-4 hours. I consider "hot" to be hot enough you can't drink it immeadiately after pouring. The more coffee in the carafe the longer it stays hot. The gold filter is a nice accessory. No more paper and it cleans up easily.

Pretty good machine. Hard to figure out how the machine works as the instructions and pictures are not the best...but I was still able to figure it out without using the enclosed DVD. I have only made coffee twice so far but I think once I figure out the kinks of the machine, it will make a great cup of coffee. If you want a coffee maker (not espresso) with a milk frother combo, this is the one to buy as there aren't many out there...especially for this price.

I bought this coffee machine about a 2 months ago, and it has been used everyday since it arrived. I love the milk frothing part, it builds up enough steam to be able to froth the milk in just secords. It also only takes about 2 or 3 min to make a whole pot of coffee. I was worried that because it had no warming plate the coffee would get cold quickly, but one day I made coffee at about 7:30am and at 7pm that night the coffee was still warm enough to drink. I made hot chocolate in it, and that was wonderful!!! This is great if you have kids! My son really enjoys the hot chocolate. I would love to buy another to have at work too! I would recommend buying it. You will love it!

My husband thinks he is having a latte from a popular restaurant every time he uses the frother on the Capresso TEC with FrothXpress. It heats the milk quickly and the coffee is always hot. We have even used the frother for making hot cocoa. It is wonderful and would recommend it to anyone who loves coffee with steamed milk!
