We wanted a 4-cup coffeemaker that would have a thermal pot and this is the only one we found. This pot is also meant to be used in the car as a thermal cup -- sounds good. But in making a tight seal for traveling, the pot lid is REALLY difficult to remove. I had a hard time taking off the lid when the pot was empty -- if it had any coffee left in it it probably would have gone flying when I finally tore it off. Why didn't they make a screw on lid like most thermal pots? Anyway, it is a pain to work with when you have to open and wash it everyday, and since we don't use it for the car, it wasn't worth the work.

I got one of these for home use and it's been great so I got one for work. Unfortunately that one was totally bad. The decanter had a discolored, defective bottom and the lid was so tight that when I pulled it off it bent the seal ring which made it useless. The label on the maker that they tell you to take off wouldn't come off to save my life. In short, the whole thing was messed up. I returned it and bought one locally that I could inspect first. It's been great just like the original.

This machine looks great but if you take milk with your coffee then it is cold and has to be heated in the microwave, the lid on the top of the machine where the coffee goes does not close tight and the lid on the carafe is so hard to get off and then the seal inside the lid moves so i just rinse it out.

In reading the reviews most people did not know what features they wanted, and then complain about it. This coffee brewer does a great job, I don't mind no timer, I just get it prepared the night before, and push the start button when I'm tracking around the kitchen. Because of the quick turn off after the brewing cycle who needs the timer, just adds to the price. The special lid does leak when it's cool and I believe that it is made that way. Easy to remove and clean when cool, but as soon as hot coffee is in the mug, the lid expands and has no leakage. If you wait the full cycle before lifting the lid then you won't get burned by the steam from the dripper. Some People did not like the #2 cone but they do make #2 gold cones and I believe you will find them here on Amazon. I'm totally pleased, a great coffee maker for the right price.

Although their coffeemakers do an excellent job of making coffee, DeLonghi WILL USE ANY EXCUSE NOT TO HONOR THE WARRANTY IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG! Here's my experience: When I ordered my coffeemaker from DeLonghi, it was "backordered" and took over a month to ship. A little over 10 months after I received it, the coffeemaker broke! (The heater coil went out and it would no longer make coffee.) Since it had been over a year since I ORDERED it, they said the one-year warranty was expired, despite the fact I had proof I had received it less than a year before (I still had the shipping confirmation). I explained this numerous times. For a couple of months, the various people I talked to kept telling me they would "look into it", but they never called back. Finally, when it actually WAS over a year since I had received the coffeemaker, when I called to check on the status of my warranty claim, they said, "Your warranty has expired. You've had this coffeemaker over one year. There is nothing we can do." I highly recommend you find a coffeemaker from a manufacturer that stands behind their product! I have a Cuisinart now, and it is WONDERFUL!

I recently recieved this coffee maker and was worried since the other reviews were so bad...but I really like it. This one replaced a one cup by Black and Decker. This DeLonghi makes much better coffee than the B&D. I haven't had any problems getting the lid off or trying to drink out of it. I just make the coffee in the carafe that came with it and pour it into my cup. I did use the carafe a couple of times to drink out of and I thought it really worked great. I have not used the attachment to fit in the cup holder but it looks to be the best design that it can be.

Have had this for a good 6 months now and am very pleased with it. I use it daily I am the only one in the family that drinks coffee regularly so the 4 cup is perfect.

My last coffee maker was glass and got broken during cleaning one fine day and after doing a lot of research I went in for this.

The auto off feature is very useful as I brew coffee before I leave for work and I can just get my coffee and leave. The Carafe keeps the coffee hot for quite some time.

What would I like added to this...possibly some electronic timer controls...but really at this price range not sure if it would be possible. A reusable filter maybe.

I read the reviews on this coffee maker and put it on my Christmas list anyway. I had a lot of trouble getting the carafe lid off and on, to the point where I wondered whether it was even supposed to come off! After only a couple of uses, the rubber seal on the lid broke. I am going to call customer service to see about getting it replaced. I'll update this review if I have any luck.
Other than that, I love the look and compact design (I'm the only coffee drinker in my household), and it makes piping hot coffee! Brew process is slower than average, though.

I only used the cup 4 times before my trying to get the lid back on (not exactly easy because of push on design versus screw on), caused the inner lid seal to break. The lid is now worthless and needs to be replaced.

Now I have to deal with seeing if Amazon will help me replace the unit, even though I already sent the packaging to the recycler a week or so ago.

I would not recommend anyone purchasing this unit, due to the lid issue and other points made in the other comments herein.

I read the reviews before I ordred this and was a little leary (because of drips and after taste) but ordered it anyway. Let me say that I love my new coffee maker. I really like the fact that the pot has a lid that you can drink from. You don't have to dirty another coffee cup. Some others reported that it drips when you drink but I have not had that happen to me. I followed the manufacturers instructions to put a vinegar and water solution through it a couple of times before the first use and have not experienced the plastic after taste some people reported. The top is a little bit hard to take off to add condiments but can be done with a little practice. It is a little bit large to take with you in the car. It does come with an attachment so that it fits down in a drink holder but my car has flip up covers on them and they get in the way of this fitting down in completely but I've used it anyway with some success. Most importantly, it makes excellent coffee. Glad I bought it.

I got this because we wanted a white, four cup maker with a metal carafe. This one met all the criteria and we haven't been disappointed. It wasn't very expensive, it makes good coffee and it keeps it pretty hot. I also like that it has automatic shut off. I had no interest in the "travel mug" capabilities of the carafe so I can't really say how good or bad that function is. I'll take one star off since that's been a wasted feature for us, but in every other respect we've been very pleased. It's definitely worth considering if you're looking for a 4 cup coffee maker.

I have no complaints with the coffee maker however if you intend to use the carafe as a cup look elsewhere. The lid leaks and you will have coffee dripping down your shirt. A better design would be a lid you screw on similar to a hot thermos. Instead this lid 'snaps' on and is sealed with a rubber washer.

I've given this 2 stars since a company like Delonghi should have figured this out before releasing the product. Remember functionality first then style.

I bought this coffee maker after a two weeks of searching. Unfortunately Braun no longer makes a 4-cup and so I looked for others to replace the BD cup-at-a-time in my office. I really like the design and the style of the Delonghi. But like others I found that it has a strong plastic taste. After two weeks and two cleanings with 5% vinegar, it still tastes like plastic. I even made a cup with my old maker and a cup with the new maker then my co-worker poured them into identical styrofoam cups. I readily identified the plastic tasting coffee on this "blind test." If time or Delonghi fixes the plastic taste, they've got a winner.

I also got plastic tasting coffee. I cleaned the unit twice with a cleanser designed specifically for coffee makers. Still plastic. I called the company who told me to clean it with vinegar and it would be fine. She wouldn't admit it, but you could tell this was not a new problem to her. I cleaned it twice with vinegar. Still plastic. Back to the store it went. Did I want an exchange? No thanks! My advice is, don't buy this product. Judging from the reviews, I guess you can get one that's OK, but why take the chance and have to deal with the hassle?

I bought this coffee maker online from ABT electronics. After using it for about 4 days, I had reached the conclusion that it was not going to work for me. While some folks might like their coffee served at a temperature just slightly above lukewarm, I am not one of them. I was thankful that ABT had a very friendly, no-questions-asked return policy. It is going back to them in the morning. Now, I just have to decide on another 4 cup coffeemaker to take its place.

Love it, but wish the cover for the carafe was a screw-type cover. I can forsee the seal eventually wearing down from all the pulling and tugging. The design, look, and fast brewing cycle are great. Esp. like the travel mug "brew and go" feature.

We have used this coffee maker for 2 weeks and can't get rid of the plastic taste to our coffee. We use Gevalia so its premium coffee. DeLonghi offered to send a new coffee maker, but wanted to charge a fee of $7. Also the lid to the carafe is too tight to remove without spilling the contents. Finally, the carafe is not truly a thermal carafe as it cools rahter quickly. Less aggravation just to throw out the coffee maker

->Discount DeLonghi DC51TTB 4-Cup Coffeemaker with Thermal Travel-Mug Carafe, Black

We had a 4 cup Krups until the carafe fell and broke. One criteria for the new machine was an unbreakable carafe. Another was that it be the 4 cup size. After searching eBay and Amazon, this looked like the best unit.

The coffee brews quickly, about one cup per minute. After brewing, the machine automatically shuts off. This is a nice feature, as it keeps the coffee from burning to the bottom of the carafe & it tastes fresher for a longer time.

We had a large supply of the Number 2 filters from the old unit and they fit the new machine perfectly.

The styling of the unit is superb. Understated elegance, much like a Mercedes or a BMW. The brushed stainless steel is an attractive contrast to the jet black of the body.

The carafe seals tightly and is leak free. In fact, the lid is a very snug fit. It's tight coming off or going on, but that results in a leak free and drip free seal.

We are totally satisfied with the DeLonghi DC 51TTB. We highly recommend this to anyone looking for a 4 cup machine with an unbreakable carafe.

Review: Lotsa Coffee to go - great idea poorly executed
by: D. Vanco on date: January 3, 2005

->Wholesale DeLonghi DC51TTB 4-Cup Coffeemaker with Thermal Travel-Mug Carafe, Black

I got this for Chrismahanukwanzaka this year (Amazon wishlists rule!) and was really excited to try it out. It's fair, but it's fairly obvious DeLonghi did not spend a lot of money per unit.

I'd actually give it 2.5 stars

The Good:
Major convenience for a cup-o-joe to-go
The size - a _real_ coffee drinkers mug: 20oz, thermal to boot!
Simple operation - add water, coffee - push button.

The Bad:
NOT a warmer (brews; shuts off)
Dorky #2 filter
IT LEAKS WHEN YOU DRINK!!

I was really jazzed to see that it came with this cool car cupholder insert that drops into you car and provides a "clicked-in" seat for the mini-carafe. You see this the second you open the box - nice surprise there as it was not in the product description.

But immediately my heart sank a bit when I saw that it did NOT use a standard size filter (like a basket or #4 cone) - it uses a smaller #2 cone. While this does seem to make sense given that the brew is only 20oz, it eliminates the possibility of using a "gold" or mesh filter. Any good coffee drinker knows paper filters are the work of Satan.
My solution: I found a #4 mesh filter that had a large "rim" that I was able to trim down to the point that it fits. Actually, a standard #4 will fit with the lid propped open a litt, and it will brew correctly, but I wanted the lid shut.

One other thing I am not crazy about is that the boiler and warmer are on a single circuit. By design this thing shuts off after the brew cycle completes. But if you lift the lid to clean the grounds or prepare to make another batch the actual "arm" that the heated water travels through lifts up with the lid via a small cantilever - and if there's ANY water in the tank (from drops left behind or just condensation during the brew cycle) it will "flash boil" into steam and ROCKET out of the little arm - a misplaced hand is going to get a serious burn from this thing. Likely easy to avoid though - just don't lift the lid for several minutes after the brew completes.

I am also not crazy that it's not a warmer - again, the design is "brew and go", but it would still be great to have a little control.

I would likely not take advantage of it myself, but the fact that this thing has no timer (which my $9 Big Lots Melitta _does_) is a bit of an oddity - it would seem to me that someone looking to speed up their morning with a cup of the old Noble Bean waiting to greet them like an old, trusted friend would surely want a timer feature.

Lastly - the carafe lid. This is why I will likely be returning this, or at least exchanging it. I don't have to go into detail for anyone that takes beverages on the road - if the cup leaks, it's worthless. At first glance I though the lid for the carafe was a pretty crafty design and has what looks to be a 4-ribbed silicon "press-to-seat" seal, but the sad fact remains that this thing is not liquid tight and will dump on you when you near the middle of the cup. Pitty - the design allows for the mouthpiece to work in any clocking position, but I would take a screw-on lid that doesn't leak over the ability to drink from my left or right hand.

Overall the brew is good - takes about 4 minutes to make the cup.

Ugh - the leak. I hope that it's just this one - if I get a replacemnt and it leaks then the whole point of this device is lost - I have a full size coffee maker and all the thermal mugs I need (leaky and otherwise). Perhaps Jot-to-Go nirvana is still out of reach...
