A fabulous machine, the only one if the coffee at your house gets consumed over more than a 30 minute window of opportunity!!!

->Buy Cuisinart DTC-975BKN Programmable Automatic Brew-and-Serve 12-Cup Thermal Coffeemaker, Black

For about a year, I had been stopping by the coffee pot section of the stores staring at the few pathetic choices, and thankfully resisted the urge to buy the mostly stainless steel Cuisinart number that my daughter has.

Just last week my girlfriend had been telling me how much she loved her thermal one, and it really got me thinking how awesome it would be if the coffee stayed hot, and didn't turn funky like it always does on a burner. A day later, I was staring at this one in the store and fell in love with it.

First of all, it was the 12 cup factor - I had only seen 10 cup thermals before and I couldn't see the point - when I entertain, I need to have more than 10 lousy cups. It also looks super in my white/bisque kitchen, and the brushed stainless steel pot is very nice looking and heavy duty.

I was forever standing in front of the micro reheating a cup of coffee or tea. Today was a very extreme example: I made a pot of coffee at 9:30 am before heading to church - and at 4:30 IN THE AFTERNOON, poured a cup and it was TOO HOT TO DRINK! Mind-blowing! And it tasted exactly like the first cup did in the morning.

The whole fam likes to also likes to drink a lot of tea, especially in the evening, and it dawned on me that I could run the water through it without coffee, and wala.... hot water for tea anytime someone wants a cup... no more standing in front of the micro for 2 minutes.

I can't tell you how awesome this coffee maker is... and having never had one I can set up the night before is truly wonderful. I love the fact that I don't have to open the top to pour. I will never own a coffeemaker with a hot plate again.

->Price Cuisinart DTC-975BKN Programmable Automatic Brew-and-Serve 12-Cup Thermal Coffeemaker, Black

This is a very functional, convenient and attractive coffee maker. Its a bit pricey, and sadly, one of the few choices with an insulated 12-cup carafe. If possible, I'd give it another 1/2 star. Would benefit from sturdy materials, a more comfortable handle and faster pouring.

The Base:
While the hand-feel is typically light weight due to the plastic construction materials, the design is no-nonsense and intuitive. Its a bit on the tall side, maybe 20". The electronic controls (clock and timer) are intuitive. There is (obviously) no hot plate. The brew basket swings to the right, requiring an additional half a foot of space; and would benefit from incorporating an more obvious handle. The red ball in the water level indicator is clearly visible from a front view, but to see the graduated rule you have to look from the left side. It's rather easy to rely on just the red ball to judge water level.

The Carafe:
Is a good insulator that rivals a good thermos. Coffee stays hot for at least 10 hours. Not peak freshness, but quite drinkable. Sometimes I really don't know if the coffee was brewed 4 ot 10 hours ago. The handle could have better ergonomics. The lid design yields an agonizingly low pour rate. I find myself uselessly tilting the carafe higher with the hope of filling the cup more quickly. If the low pour rate is the price of such terrific thermal performance, I'll gladly pay it. Also, the mouth of the carafee is maybe two inches in diameter, so cleaning will definitely require a brush.

The Resulting Coffee:
Is very acceptable, and due to the insulated carafe, stays that way all day or throughout the night. The Capresso (see below) was an 8-cup machine, and the larger capacity in this machine often means four of us can have coffee without having to brew a second, partially consumed pot that might end up being discarded.

A Side Note:
The Cuisinart DTC-975 is replacing a Capresso Elegant - an over-engineered product that from week 1 had a brew basket that would pop open during the brewing cycle and cause the coffee to run onto the counter and floor. Capresso's service dept. could not fix the machine in three separate attempts. An anomaly?

I bought the Cuisinart DTC-975 model 3 years ago and have brewed several pots daily. The unit (sadly) stopped working last month but I was pleasantly surprised that I was within days of their 3-year replacement warranty. I receieved the new unit today and am already packing up the $10 Toastmaster unit and getting the Cuisinart ready.

The coffee keeps its fresh flavor for hours (not like those hotplate units). I strongly reccommend this unit to anyone who enjoys delicious coffee.

I bought three of these: 1 for Dad, 1 for in-Laws, 1 for us. Dad doesn't use his a lot and so far no problems (that I am aware of,) in-Laws' glass inside carafe broke within 1 month of receipt. Ours overflowed 2-3 times/month. The basket that holds the filter and grounds doesn't clearly sit even and unless it is perfectly aligned, grounds and coffee overflows.

Last night the most recent overflow fried the electronics. This brewer is 3 months old and worthless.

I just bought this coffeemaker two days ago (from Macy's at the same price) for 3 main reasons: it makes 12 cups, a sturdy thermos (I'm clutsy and had broken my previously purchased thin glass coffeepot 3 times), and a programmable timer. So far, it works great, and after getting home from a long day of Christmas shopping yesterday, it was nice to enjoy a cup of coffee that still tasted fresh and warm.

Now, the thing that REALLY bugs me about this coffeemaker is that it "BEEPS" when the coffee is ready. With a 22-month old who sleeps lightly, and a little dog that is a bit neurotic, having a beeping coffeemaker makes my dog bark and my daughter wake up much too early. Couldn't they just add a green light to illuminate when the coffee is done? Hopefully, my dog will get used to the sound. :)

P.S. I believe the reviewer who kept overflowing this coffeemaker should add less water. ;)

this coffee maker is hard to use - to screw the lid on the vacuum you must be well coordinated and strong. No one else in the family can make coffee as they get the lid on screwy and therefore it will not drip except all over the counters and floor. The screw on top design is cumbersome and if you are older and have problems with arthritis it would be impossible.

As a coffee lover since 3rd grade, and an engineer with a low tolerance for flaws, I'd call this coffeemaker near-perfect. I gave it as a gift this Christmas, and our whole extended family was impressed with the unit. The thermos carafe has an ingenious screw-top lid (easily removed for cleaning), with a beautifully clever mechanism that allows coffee to trickle in during brewing, and pour out without opening the top, but still manage to be airtight the rest of the time. I'd like to shake the hand of the guy that designed that simple-but-elegant mechanism. The coffeemaker brews a full 12-cup carafe in just 10 minutes, a real benefit given the effect that brewing time has on the coffee's flavor. And the carafe is insulated enough that the coffee remained drinkable past the 2 hour mark. The only weakness that I saw is that, since the unit shuts off completely once the coffee is brewed, you can't tell at a glance that there is coffee waiting for you (if it started automatically by the timer). But that's pretty minor, and I'm already recommending this machine to friends. Well done, Cuisinart.

I use it to make 2 cups or full pots. I have used many different machines over 15 years of drinking coffee (and therefore making coffee) daily and have absolutely no complaints about this machine. I would like to address the complaints here for people shopping for a coffeemaker.

RE: The reported leakage problem. This is due to OVERFILLING. The water reservoir is larger than the carafe for a reason people: Steam builds up as water is heated, if the reservoir were the exact size of the carafe... YOU finish this sentence. If you can- a) figure out in your head what happens to heated plastic without room built in to displace heat and b) either fill the machine with the actual carafe being used or something you measured out beforehand that is equal to the volume of said carafe- than you're smart enough to own this excellent machine.

RE: The BEEP. Yes it beeps (3 times) and yes it's not a whisper, but it's not the trumpet people are making it out to be. These people must have it set up in their bedrooms two feet from their head. If the machine is in your kitchen and you are nearby it's not loud enough to wake you, it's just loud enough to hear if you're in the other room and can't WAIT to get that first cup of java. It's morning and it tells me "hey, your coffee is ready." It's evening and I'm chatting with friends and forget and then it tells me "hey, your coffee is ready." People who complain about the beep would complain about getting wet in the rain or cold in the winter.

RE: The screw cap. Yes it takes 3 revolutions to get this SCREW cap SCREWED on. And like any nut and bolt system you have to start screwing evenly in order to form a tight bond. This tight bond is what keeps your coffee hot. The carafe pours using a built-in ball-bearing that uses that wonderful thing we like to call gravity to move the ball ever so slightly away from the opening so that your HOT coffee can pour into your waiting favorite coffee cup. The stream is thin yes, again for a reason: large openings equal larger exposure to air, air that is most probably colder than you like your coffee.

I've tried many others and this is my favorite. This is the coffeemaker I would give as a gift to someone who really loves their coffee.

Now I will retire to my DTC-975BK and celebrate its excellence with an afternoon cup of French Roast.

I just got this in black/stainless. Did the prewash with vinegar and ran through several times with water only before using. The last run I left the water in the carafe overnight. By morning 10 hours later, the water was still hot with steam.
Just made coffee now and it is steaming hot --much, much hotter than my previous hamilton beach.
I think it's a good basic machine with pause n serve (30 seconds) & programmable timer.
For the price ($99) I would think a gold filter would be included. Otherwise, it seems to be sturdy & good quality.
It is very tall and the reservoir is filled from the top so make sure you have enough space if you have cabinets above the counter.
---ADDED THIS COMMENT AFTER USING FOR A WHILE.
I'VE HAD A FEW INCIDENTS OF FRUSTRATING COFFEE MESS. Several times now the pause and serve has not worked and the coffee streams out. Once I had programmed for morning and when I awoke all of the water was stopped up in the basket. The basket was a little crooked. Good thing I wasn't making a full pot otherwise it would have overflowed all over the kitchen counter. I'm hoping there's a way to prevent these two things from happening again. Otherwise, I will return this maker and spend more to get the Capresso 10 cup.

I only received this coffee maker this week, and I must say, I am impressed. I ran plain water through the system to clean it out when I first plugged it in, and some 16 hours later, the water was far too hot to touch, let alone drink. The first pot of coffee was the best I'd had in a long time, and again, the temperature was very hot, probably near boiling. A few pros and cons to consider before you buy:

+ Great classy look
+ As indicated above, the coffee is piping hot, and stays piping hot in the thermal carafe for far longer than needed. (Be sure to warm the carafe with hot tap water before brewing and it will stay hot even longer.)
+ Great tasting coffee

- The audible beeping that alerts you that the brew cycle is complete is far too loud (especially when you have children sleeping down the hall). It is a shame that Cuisinart added this "bonus feature" without giving the user the option of turning it off. Additionally, I don't see the need for 5 beeps; perhaps 2 would be more tolerable.

- This is a very tall unit, at least in comparison to non-thermal models.

+- Be aware that the stainless option has stainless steel on the filter basket face as well. I only saw photos of the "black" version, so when I ordered the stainless option, I expected just the carafe to be stainless, not the filter basket face.

I would have rated this product 5 stars if it weren't for the beeping. Bottom line, if you want hot coffee, this is a great choice.

I read the other reviews and was very excited to get this coffee maker. I was particularly excited by the review where the woman said her coffee stayed hot even after she returned from church group.

I have had the opposite experience. The coffee isn't even that hot from the first pour and 1 hour later, I'm back to microwaving it. Another nit is that it pours so slowly from the decanter, but obviously, if it was hot, I would ignore this minor problem.

This machine is heading back to Amazon today and now I need to research its replacement.

After a few years of using an old Black & Decker carafe model and getting tired of wiping up the counter in the morning I had enough. I searched around for a quality maker and read all the reviews I could. My needs were few but demanding, the first was coffee that was hot, too many makers make a Luke warm brew and to me there is nothing worse. Second was a great tasting coffee, being a black and no sugar drinker I wanted a maker that would let the natural taste come through. To a black drinker this is very important because sugar and milk can mask the natural taste. Finally I was just tired of the mess when the old maker would clog or not work properly and I would come down in the morning to a big mess and worse no coffee. The Cuisinart has met all my needs and I am extremely pleased, the coffee is piping hot (for hours) taste great and so far not one morning mishap. I would recommend this maker to any coffee drinker.

I've owned this coffeemaker for about 10 days and my husband and I love it! We think it's the best one we've ever owned. I bought this as a replacement for my KitchenAid that was recently recalled due to safety issues; reviews here on amazon.com thankfully warned me that the remaining KitchenAid coffeemakers are not good, and I found positive reviews here on the Cuisinart 12-cup thermal and decided to try it. It's my first thermal pot and I think it beats the conventional warmer plate by a mile for keeping the coffee hotter and fresher, and I'm sure it must save some energy too. It's also easy to use as long as you take time to screw the top on the carafe properly. It doesn't drip at all when pouring coffee ... one of my pet peeves on other pots I've owned including the KitchenAid. It is taller than the average, so be sure it fits under your cabinets... rough dimensions are 16" tall, 7.5" wide, and 11" deep. We are not coffee connoisseurs ... two cups in the morning does it for me. For years I bought one cheap coffeemaker after another and usually had to replace them within 3 to 12 months and suffer the frustration of their shoddy construction. Once I started buying pots in this price range, I was convinced it's a better way to go. My KitchenAid lasted 3.5 years before they recalled it but the design wasn't nearly as nice as this one. I feel this pot is well worth the price.

I have used a Black&Decker programable coffeemaker with thermal carafe for a number of years. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it only made 8 cups. I therefore decided to replace it with this Cuisinart model. I like the sleek look and metal carafe (as opposed to glass). It does make very good coffee. However... I find screwing the lid on the carafe very fussy. I had to put a touch of nail polish where it says pour because with the black it's impossible to read. Nothing is as easy to deal with (filling, etc.) as the Black&Decker I had. I also wish I could disconnect the infernal beeping that occurs (5 or 6 beeps) when it is finished brewing - totally unneccessary!! Other than the sleek design (which you have to pull out from under the cabinet to fill due to height) the only thing this machine has over Black & Decker is that it makes 12 cups. I'll stick with it, but not the great buy I thought it was.

You can make coffee at 6 a.m. and it is still fresh and hot at 9 p.m. and there's no messing with the lid; the coffee brews, you pour. My husband was not able to make coffee in this coffee maker. He gets up first and likes lots of strong coffee in the mornings. Every time (!) he made coffee in this maker it would over flow all over the kitchen and get coffee grounds in everything.

It is difficult to clean up after this happens as the basket holder does not detatch from the coffee maker and it is hard to get all the overflowed grounds out of it. Then the carafe has to be taken apart. It is hard to get the grounds out of the lid where the coffee is suposed to flow.

We had it two weeks, wasted tons of coffee, had lots of arguements and returned it for a different coffee maker, which is working fine.

For the coffee experts among you please read a review from someone who knows way more, and cares way more, about coffee than I do. I just have a cup of coffee in the morning and am set for the day.

Through the years I have gone through several brands and models, cost range $50 to $100. With each there was at the very least some minor issue that was bothersome. Some makers stopped brewing before all the water was used up, some required very precise positioning of the carafe or the coffee would spill over, some did not keep the coffee hot for very long.

This cuisinart is great for my needs. It has auto brewing so the coffee is ready in the morning and if I decide to hit the snooze a couple of times the coffee is still hot and fresh when I get to it. It requires no unscrewing of the top of the carafe to pour the coffee. I don't grind my beans I just use Dunkin' ground coffee. So if you're like me; and occasional coffee drinker this is a great product. The only surprise was the beep when the coffee is done. It is quit loud and initially I was not too pleased with it but now that I am used to it I listen for it in the morning while in bed. (It is not loud enough to wake me up, but if I'm awake I will hear it.) I find it kind of comforting at this point.

Pretty much the best maker I have owned. Worth every penny.

I bought this because I was tired of buying replacements for broken glass carafes. The other desired feature was large capacity (12 cup). I like the appliance a lot: it definitely scores on keeping the coffee hot (with no use of electricity).
Downsides: (1) it beeps when done brewing, and you can't turn that off (2) there is no adjustment for brewing strength, (3) the icon on the display that indicates that you have set the pot to turn on automatically is too small for us oldsters to see (there is no light in the display)and (4)the "mechanism" at the bottom of the filter holder is really poorly designed in that it consists of a weak spring and a RUBBER BAND. Once the rubber band breaks, I predict the end of the ability to pull the carafe out to pour coffee prior to the end of the brew cycle. Frankly I would expect better from this brand!

Update, November 2005. Still love the hot coffee. Still hate the beeping (we live in silicon valley: our house is SMALL and the beeps are LOUD). Have had 1 case (so far!) where we inserted the basket imperfectly and had huge coffee mess (unpleasant at 4 am).

Our old Braun bit the dust and I wanted to get a thermos type coffee maker to be more green. The only two that could make 12 cups was this one and an Italian one that used #3 filters?

This one works well. The coffee is hotter than the old Braun and it stays hot for a long time. The filter basket does not stand up by itself...a minor irritation.

The carafe is well designed and easy to use. It pours relatively slowly. You can't, however, tell how much water to put in it for a partial pot since it is stainless and not transparent.

There's an irritating beeper that beeps 5 long loud beeps when the coffee is done. I don't think there is a way to turn it off.

It is tall. Check to see if it goes under your counter. Other than minor irritations, I like this coffee maker.

I am not a coffee drinker at all, but my husband is a coffee nut! Before this pot, he'd brew a pot in the AM, and pretty much keep it turned on all day, so that when he needed a cup it'd be warm. The result was a "dirty ashtray" smell in our kitchen! This pot allows him to have his hot coffee when he wants it without the burnt coffee smell.

It's simply AMAZING!! I actually recorded the coffee temps and found that 12 hours later the coffee was still 130 degrees.

The only problem we've had was when my husband would grind the coffee too fine, it gets stuck and causes the brew basket to overflow making a real nasty river of coffee in the kitchen. Once we figured out what the culprit was, it's been pure bliss since then!

Those who have trouble with this machine have problems that are unrelated to the coffeemaker! It works as designed and does a great job of making hot, great tasting coffee with little fuss. The lid screws on easily without having to use force, contrary to what some have said. It can be cross-threaded like any other screw mechanism, but so what? The filter basket can be set in the holder askew, but again, so what? Screwing on the lid and setting the basket in straight can both be done right every time by anyone who pays minimal attention to what they are doing. Reading some of negative reviews will either convince you that (A): this coffeemaker was designed and produced in Elbonia at the old Yugo factory and should never be used for anything but as a wedding gift to your ex-boss, or (B): we live in a nation of whiners and victims.
Bottom line: It's a great coffee maker that does everything you would want it to do and does it well. It's quite possible that some one or two people actually got hold of a defective unit, but I think the defect in the coffee making process may just be personal rather than mechanical. And as far as the beeper goes? If that little sound bothers you, maybe you shouldn't be drinking coffee anyway. Buy it and enjoy it!

My husband and I are what you might call coffee snobs. I considered buying the Capresso but I was too cheap. After reading all the reviews, I decided this Cuisinart may be our salvation from burned coffee sitting on the burner too long! And it is! I think it works great and makes a good cup of coffee (helps when you start with good beans!). We have only had a problem with it spilling during brewing the very first time we made coffee. Haven't had a problem since.

You do need to make sure the lid is threaded on correctly. It's pretty obvious when it gets misaligned. If you have to start forcing it, then it's probably on wrong. And you have to make sure the brew basket is in correctly, but once again, that's easy to do as long as you are paying attention (although at 6:30am pre-coffee, it's hard to pay attention!).

In our experience, it keeps coffee hot for about 3-4 hours. What's nice about it though is that even when the coffee gets to be lukewarm, it doesn't have that nasty burned taste that our old coffee maker would produce from sitting on the heating element for two hours. The end of brewing beep is kind of loud, but it's out in the kitchen, so who cares?

Overall, we are very happy with this purchase. We don't use the auto setting very often as we like to freshly grind our beans, but it's been easy to set up when we have done it. Easy to clean, and I like the white with stainless steel since our kitchen is white. The coffee maker is pretty tall so make sure it will fit under your cabinets. I have to pull it out away from the cabinets to pour in the water, and then move it back underneath.

This is a great idea.....12 cup thermal! Which is why I bought it. BUT, it overflows no matter what we have tried...no, we are not overfilling it, yes, the filter is in correctly. The problem is the coffee gets backed up on the top of the carafe, doeseventually go in but not before running down the sides of the carafe! It must not be dispersing the air as the coffee is trying to go in the top??? What gives? Does keep the coffee hot, love the look , the coffee tastes fine, the 12 cup thermal is great idea...but am spending a fortune in paper towels to clean up the "overflow"......

First off, let me say that so far as I am concerned, there has never been the coffee maker made that is worth what this one is selling for. That said, once you get over the sticker shock this is a superb coffee maker. I've only owned it a short time, but I've had no problems whatsoever.

My experience with the "how long does it stay hot" question: Good and hot serving temperature, easily 4 hours; sipping hot, another 2 or so hours. That totals at least six hours of hot coffee. If that isn't long enough for you, I would suggest brewing another pot.

By-the-way, I agree with those who complain the timer window is too small, and unlit. I mean, for this price would it have killed them.......? But, on the other hand, the smallness of the window and controls leaves the machine looking very uncluttered and relatively clean and sleek, which is nice considering the rather larger than usual size the unit must be in order to accomodate the large 12-cup thermal carafe.

Anyway, it's an excellent coffee maker and I'm very glad (so far) I bought it.

Added on 06/14/06: Seven months have passed since my initial review of this item. It is a great coffee maker. I've become so used to it I can't remember not having it. In fact, I've bought a second one and put it away so that, hopefully many years from now, when this one bites the dust I'll have another ready and waiting to go.

Added on 02/24/2007: Still absolutely perfect.

I really wanted a programmable thermal coffeemaker that made hot coffee. This one fits my requirements, but after reading the reviews, I was concerned about the lid and decided against it. Then, as I looked at stores, I found this one on display at Linens N Things, and I played with the lid...for about 30 minutes! I could not, no matter what I did, get the blasted lid on straight. Impossible. Now, I'm fairly intelligent, usually quite good at problem solving, but I really couldn't get the darned lid on right.

I would have left this alone for good, except I found it on display at another store and just out of curiousity tried the lid on that one. Went right on straight, no problems, perfect. I tried it over and over again and didn't have one single problem with it.

I took a chance and bought one, and when I got it home, I found the lid very easy to open, close, get it on perfectly every time. I've had no problems at all. I think there must be some of these that have the lid threads misaligned or something, which keeps the lid from sitting correctly (which is why some people have troubles and others don't), and all the rest are fine.

I use the timer, set it for 4:30 am (I get up about 5) and the coffee is perfect. In fact, when I get home from work around 4 to 5-ish, the coffee is actually still warm.

I loved this coffee maker...until it overflowed, all over the kitchen. 12 cups of hot, hot coffee and coffee grounds everywhere. Twice in a row. I finally figured out what happened. There's a little button underneath the coffee filter that comes down when you remove the carafe to get a cup of coffee while it is still brewing. That button stops the coffee flow through the filter while you grab that first cup. You need to ensure that when you put the coffee pot underneath the filter, that the top of the carafe pushes up that little button. Since I've done that, it hasn't overflowed again.

I love this coffee maker.

->Best Price Cuisinart DTC-975BKN Programmable Automatic Brew-and-Serve 12-Cup Thermal Coffeemaker, Black

This is one of those products that in principle would solve all of your coffe making woes. It should brew the coffee quickly, let you sneak a cup before it's done, keep the coffe hot all day, and make pleanty.

In reality, it requires some effort to line up the carafe properly so as not to have coffe spew all over the counter. It is remakably easy to misalign. The sneak a cup feature works intermittantly, I've givin up doing this because usually it keeps right on coming out, and I have a mess to clean up. The main redeeming quality is that it does a GREAT job of keeping the coffee hot. That is the main reason I bought it in the first place. The large capacity coinsides with keeping it hot longer, since I can make one pot that lasts all day.

Bottom line: a little finicky but keeps the coffee hot.

Folks, Let me tell you.... I read all the reviews on this coffee maker before my wife and I decided that; Oh, come on! They must be goofy. How hard can it be to set this coffee pot up correctly to work without spillage; we bought it anyway.
It worked for a week or so and then dumped the coffee all over the counter and on the kitchen floor.
"I must have done something wrong", said the lady of the house. Ok, I'll try it, said the man of the house.
It worked... See, all you have to do is.. place the carafe in correctly. Well, I did it for three days and again all over the floor.
I called the company and a sweetie pie with the "Have a nice day" mentality helped me to calm down and told me that perhaps the cover was defective. They will send me another if I would return mine.
Wife said no.... order a whole carafe so we will have two when we get company. So 50 dollars later, I have two carafes.
Wonderful! Now either one will dump the coffee onto the counter after a week or ten days of lulling me into a state of confidence by working fine for 10 days.
We have a great deal of patience, and we also feel that we are smart enough to find the problem. So we stuck with it trying different filter baskets, and soaking the lids before using...
It was many months now, and it decided to dump this morning; all over the counter; all over the floor; grinds and coffee.
The carafe was half filled indicating that it did start out ok and I didn't misalign anything; but with a mind of its own, it decided that it hated us again today.

So folks, we got two green garbage bags, one inside the other, and dumped that 99.00 + 50.00 more coffee pot in the trash.
It isn't worth the aggravation.
I tried to find a website for their corporate office, but they haven't the guts to show any, so this is the only place I could tell you our story.
I kid you not. We should have believed all the negatives in this product review section.
I would have loved to return it to Amazon, but after so much elapsed time, it would not have been fair.
Thank you for listening.

I just received this maker for Christmas 05 and have brewed several pots since. No problems so far. The lid does need to be started squarely or the top will crossthread. Not an issue. Poors a little slow. So what. As for the reviewers who complained of the thing not working or spewing coffee everywhere, no such issues here. So far, so VERY good. Thermal Carafes are definitely the way to go if folks drink more than 20 minutes apart. And this one definetly keeps coffee hot without "cooking" it. The auto-off is another great feature. Well constructed and attractive. All thumbs up for now.

Gosh and golly --- works as advertised! Despite the numerous negative critiques, I just had to try for myself. I agree with the reviewers who take adequate care to line up the lid, basket, etc. And I will add that this is the same as driving a car, since there are consequences as to where you move the steering wheel -- slightly off and you've got trouble! A pleasure to use, EXCEPT for one thing many others have noted: the loud beeps ARE excessive. I say let the coffee do the waking in the AM. A well-placed piece of bubble-gum might remedy the noise.

Great cuppa, minimal effort.

I read all the reviews of this coffee maker before we bought one.

We must have a new and improved model. There is a water-line tube on the outside, left side of the machine...very easy to read and is accurate.
There is NO hotplate (don't know where that review came from), the filter holder can only go in one way for no mistakes, the screw-on lid to the EXCELLENT carafe is wide-threaded so no way can you get it on NOT straight (unless you don't look)...

Everything works great...and the coffee stays 'hot' at least 10 hours because that's how long it took me to drink it all. It makes great coffee (and uses less coffee with more taste) and we would buy it again in a heartbeat!

I researched online reviews and shopped around for a new coffee maker. I finally decided on the Cuisinart. I love it! It keeps the coffee hot all day long, is easy to use, and had all of the features I was looking for. The only thing I had a problem with is that the height is too tall to fit under my cabinets. But, I live in an old farmhouse where nothing is standard, so I'm sure my cabinets are not at the standard height of most households. The Amazon price was right, too. Great product overall!!

Asthetically very attractive. Not too many features, that all would be lost if the machine broke down, but not too few to make it a real time saver and luxury item. I really enjoy the thermal caraffe and not have to worry about the coffee cooking for hours. The automatic off is probably it's best feature, making it worry free. I've never owned a programable coffee brewer before and thought I could really live without it - but - oh - what a pleasure to wake up to a fresh pot in the morning, and not something you have to be a rocket scientist to program.
While i toyed with the idea of going one better with the built in coffee grinder. I feel I have made a much wise decision in getting this wonderful piece of machinery and having a separate coffee mill - especially for those times when I wish to change the flavor of coffee beans. Am definitely not sorry at all for the purchase and would only replace it - if and when that time ever comes - with one just like it.

Have read most of the pros and cons in the buyers review section and felt the thermal coffeemaker was worth a try. I was tired of transferring fresh coffee to two thermos bottles.
I love this product. I agree the cap can be cantankerous to line up. But the coffee it makes is excellent and retains its heat for a long time. I will keep in mind the review about the button under the filter to prevent overflowing. I like the longer pouring lip versus that found on other carafes.

by: Joseph W. Keyes on date: January 24, 2006

->Cheap Cuisinart DTC-975BKN Programmable Automatic Brew-and-Serve 12-Cup Thermal Coffeemaker, Black

I've owned two of these machines. Here are the details:

First, the carafe is great. I've come home after a 10 hour day to find the morning coffee still warm enough and very drinkable. The cap alignment is a bit awkward, but it keeps the coffee hot and fresh. I now have two of them and have used them for this year's Christmas/New Years gatherings. They kept regular and decaf coffee hot and fresh throughout the evening. I used my replacement "Barista Aroma Grande" machine to brew the coffee then put it into the superior Cuisinart carafes. That is why I gave the product one star.

The downsides include almost everything else:

As a previous reviewer noted, if the carafe is not seated properly, you wake up to a puddle of coffee on your kitchen counter and floor. This happened to me twice.

Consequently, if any of that puddle seeps into the machine from underneath or drips into it from the LED display window, the machine is kaput. This is why out first machine failed.

The water reservoir requires filling the machine from the top. My replacement has a separate container that is easier to manipulate. It is a much neater way to fill the machine.

The red indicator ball on the side of the Cuisinart machine stopped working.

The second machine just stopped working. Like another reviewer noted, when you hit the "on" button, the machine beeped after a minute or so without producing any coffee. This was not a result from an overflow condition, nor a result of a user error - it just stopped working.

Bottom line: look elsewhere for a reliable machine.

We bought the Cuisinart DTC-975 because it is one of the only 12 cup thermal carafe coffeemakers on the market. The term "cup" is used rather loosely in the coffeemaker world. In the case of the Cuisinart it holds 12 - 5 oz cups for a total of 60 oz. The equivalent 10 cup coffeemaker makes 50 oz of coffee, but some 10 cup makers use a 4 oz cup measurement and make only 40 oz.

The timer works well and is relatively easy to set. Because the coffee is never re-heated it tastes great 1st cup to last. The carafe really does keep the coffee hot for several hours, but there's a catch. The flow-threw lid is very tricky to align properly. If you screw it on wrong, and it doesn't fit tight, you end up with 60 oz of coffee all over your counter top. Despite my best efforts this happened several times, while we owned this coffeemaker.

The really bad news is that ours quit working after less than a year. The heating element appears to have burnt out. We are sold on the idea of a thermal carafe coffeemaker and just purchased a Zojirushi EC-BD15 as a replacement. Will see how that one does, but on principle I would not recommend or buy another Cuisinart product, because of their cheap build quality.

Before this 12-cup model, I owned Cuisinart's 8-cup model. Both work very well; the 12-cup has the obvious capacity advantage, but the 8-cup brewed the coffee hotter. There's something about metal carafes that absorb more of the coffee's heat than carafes with glass liners. However, no one (that I've found) makes 10- or 12-cup glass-lined carafes. The 12-cup model still gets it hot enough for enjoyment, however; which is much hotter than my old Melita 10-cup w/metal carafe. TIP: pre-heating the carafe with your hottest tap water helps.

A note about Cuisinart being a good company: I bought the 8-cup model back in 1998 and it started ending the brew cycle too early after about 5 months. Cuisinart replaced it quickly. It went up again with the same problem in 2002, and for only $10 they replaced it once more. The unit they replaced it with was upgraded, had the auto-program function (just as the 12-cup model does), and seemed to have a redesigned brew-cycle altogether. It is still running fine, and I brewed 2-3 pots a day, EVERY day. Great unit, great company!

coffee never gets burnt taste
large carafe size

Cons: too tall
tricky lid/basket combo- will create mess if not perfectly lined up

I am an able bodied person with a college degree and I STILL had problems with getting the coffee pot to work properly without coffee spilling out all over. what a mess! I got so disgusted I started putting the coffee pot in the sink because I was afraid to use it. I have now mastered the very touchy lid/ basket alignment and love the coffee pot to death. If you "preheat" the thermal carafe with hot water from the faucet, it will keep the coffee warmer even longer.

I'll make coffee at 9:00 A.M. and it will be hot to the touch at 4:00 P.M.
The coffee tastes great as it does not cook, it just stays warm in the thermal carafe. I hate burnt coffee!!!!

I ordered a remanufactured black version, but I'm writing here with the bulk of the reviews.

1. My boyfriend and I have had no problems with overflows, after making coffee for 3-4 days. We do check that the basket is straight and that the carafe is pushing up on the pause & serve valve. He is an architect, and I am spatially-oriented, so maybe that helps. Some folks have also speculated that some carafes have mis-threaded lids, leading some people to have problems and others not. That could be, and was part of why I thought getting a refurbished one would be a good idea.

2. Coffee is good, about the same as our previous well-used glass-carafe drip coffeemaker, but stays hot without burning. Some other thermal-carafe models have reports of nasty plastic smell/taste. This is not an issue with this model. I have a very sensitive nose to chemical smells.

3. The unit is very tall, and you need space to hold the carafe as you pour into the top. Fortunately, we are in the midst of making custom kitchen cabinets, so we are designing a cubby around this coffeemaker! If you have standard wall cabinets (18" above countertop), it will fit, barely.

4. This unit does make very close to the advertised 60 oz. of coffee (perhaps 58 oz). I measured, using a measuring cup marked with ounces. It is very similar to our previous 12 cup coffeemaker. We make a full pot most days, so this was important to us - had I wanted a smaller model, I would have gone with the favorably rated Braun 8-cup (44 oz) thermal carafe.

Overall: Good coffeemaker; refurbished model more reasonably priced than new model.

The thing that drives us nuts is the "coffee's done" beep. It's loud, and it wakes up my family when I make coffee early in the morning. I've searched the manual and the internet for a way to turn this off.

I have gone through many coffee makers in the past two years but this one is a keeper.I read all the pros and cons before purchasing and i must say, this is to date, my favorite. The coffee stays piping hot for at least 5 hours. no joke. the first night I set it up at 8pm, when I checked at 6am, the water was still very warm. On the weekends I make coffee at 6am and at 12pm the coffee is still very hot and taste fresh.

Here is a tip: once you fill the reservoir with cold water, fill the carafe with hot water for a minute or so to warm it up, then discard the water and immediately put the lid on. Even without pre-warming, coffee is very hot and stays that way for about 4 hours.

IF the lid is not on level, it will overflow. I personally have not had this problem but others have. The carafe is a little heavy but no big deal for us. The "ready" beep is annoyingly loud but again, for us that wasn't a big deal. IF you grind your beans fine, you might have the overflow problem. we use regular ground coffee so again, we haven't had that problem. You will need to let guests know that all they do is "pour", no turning to open or close. My guests have broken the little ball on top doing this(easy to put back on) needless to say "I" serve the coffee now.

bottom line. Its pricey but if you want coffee to stay hot for hours, taste fresh and a carafe that looks great on your table, this is your buy.

We're generally please with the coffee maker. I think Cuisinart has overextended it's brand. I used to think Cusinart products were well designed and well made. I no longer feel this way.

The coffee maker makes decent coffee and the thermal carafe does keep it warm. We've had for about 2-years now and the black paint covering the portion of the coffee maker where the clock and the controls are, is beginning to rub off. This is a poor design. The coffee maker is beginning to look a bit tacky as the paint rubs off.

Other than that, we've been pretty happy with it.

->Buy Online Cuisinart DTC-975BKN Programmable Automatic Brew-and-Serve 12-Cup Thermal Coffeemaker, Black

The motivation for buying this coffeemaker was that it came in stainless and white (rather than stainless and black) and that it was among the more highly rated of the stainless and white coffeemakers. Thus far, I am very impressed. I made a full pot of coffee at 9 am, and when I poured another cup at 5 pm, the coffee was still steaming. The coffee itself was very good also.

As some reviewers have noted, the machine is a bit finicky. The lid must be properly threaded to the carafe and the coffee basket pushed all the way in, otherwise you are cruising for a real mess. If you're just shy of comotose first thing in the morning, you would be better off using the programmable feature and preparing your coffee (and its maker) when you're awake. I love the fact that you don't need to futz with the carafe lid prior to pouring your coffee, and that it keeps the coffee hot all day.

All said, it's a great coffeemaker, but not markedly different than my previous thermal carafe Mr. Coffee, which was half the price. The only reason I rate this four stars instead of five is that it seems overpriced. The technology is not noticeably better than "lesser" brands on the market, and it's twice the price. I think if they brought it down to $75 or less, it would be a better value.

After many years of searching for the perfect coffee pot, I think I've come close with this one!!

Automatic timer, so the coffee is waiting for us when we wake up.

It has a great thermal carafe that keeps the coffee hot and great tasting (not burnt) for HOURS! The coffee brews at 4:30 am for hubby before he goes to work. Sometimes I like a cup at noon after lunch, and its nice and hot. The carafe is also the largest I've been able to find. Usually carafes are 8 to 10 cups. Of course we all know that really means about 5 cups. This 12 cup carafe gives us a couple extra cups, which is great when friends drop by.

The only two problems I would like to see fixed are: 1) Make the top hole larger. I realize its probably small to keep the coffee hot longer, but its too small to get your hand in to wash the inside of the carafe. I have to stick a sponge in the opening, then use a long handled wooden spoon to move it around.

The other con is the labels on the front of the coffee pot. They rub off very easily with normal cleaning of the base. You might want to put a dab of clear nail polish over the words, "on" "off" "timer" etc. to save them from being wiped off. I ended up rewriting the labels in marker, then using clear nail polish. Its held up to wiping for a few months now.

Other than that, the coffee pot is great! We've had it for over a year and love it. I will be buying the same model as a replacement when needed.

You will ll first find that you will need to take some time to figure out how it works. Then you will have to get a magnifying glass to read the tiny print located on the clock that tells you if it's am or pm or if the program is on to set a time to brew your coffee. After that you will find yourself surprised when you find water all over your counter along with coffee grounds because it did not work correctly. You'll also have fun trying to fit the paper coffee filter in the holder. Then try to return it to Amazon. You'll find that to be an interesting trip as well. Try Mr. Coffee next time. It's a lot easier and works a lot better.

Two days ago, My "other" coffee pot DIED, just like the very same model before it, both only lasted at most 6 mos. Seems over the past several years no matter what brand I bought all DIED in a very very short time period. This time I was just fed up, in the long run I was spending a great deal of money replacing my coffee maker at least twice a year.
Very long ago I was sold on the good ole "Mr Coffee", we used them at work (as well at home) day in and day out for YEARS and they just kept on plugging away and so dependable, but something changed at some point in time and they began to be added to my trash within months.

SO, 2 days ago I decided to start some research for a new one and willing to spend more to get something reliable, one I liked the style and functions. I had a few functions I MUST have.

1st: For safety reasons I wanted to be certain it had "Auto Shut-Off" so I never had to worry when I was out doing errands (did I or didn't I).

2nd: I wanted a 12 cup (they seem to be harder to find).

3rd: I wanted Black in color & not too big.

4th: But NOT least, a GOOD solid long term warranty (unlike all those others that had such short warranty's that the machine always only Died shortly AFTER the Waranty ended.

SO, my decision after all the research led me to Cuisinart DTC-975BKN.
My opinion can only be based on this first day, but I'm feeling very good about my selection.
It has the most important features I wanted.
The price is a bit high, But after all the money I've put out on the cheaper models I've tossed (like at least 2 a year)& not to mention waking up ready for coffee only to see your machine has died once again & then all the hassel & time of going out just to buy another. SO the price does not seem that high at all.
As a first time user this AM of making my first Pot of Coffee, it was a no brainer, very user friendly, no mess, no fuss and faster making 12 cups than the old 10 cup ones, PLUS it "beeps" just to let me know it's done and I don't have to keep checking and waiting for my coffee, too cool.
Then after the beeps, then machine just shuts off (saving a bit on my Elect bill to boot).
This is also my first time having a machine with an insulted pot which is very attractive as well functions just as advertised, Fresh Hot Coffee (just like the first cup)for hours.
The whole machine is most attractive, slim & does not take up much counter space.
To top it all off, I VERY much like the 3 year warranty, I read it and am pleased with the repair or replace services offered, just make certain to staple that "proof of purchase" to the Instruction Manual and keep in your files.
The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star was that this is my first day of use.

I LOVE IT.

Review: The newest design for Cuisinart's DTC-975BKN (black)
by: L. Heller on date: April 1, 2007

->Lowest Price Cuisinart DTC-975BKN Programmable Automatic Brew-and-Serve 12-Cup Thermal Coffeemaker, Black

Okay... Not only do I feel the need to comment on this coffee maker, but I also have to respond to all these negative comments that I read, prior to buying this machine.

Like many others, our old coffee maker (which happened to be an older model, glass carafe Cuisinart), needed a replacement carafe. I had already bought a replacement carafe once before and wasn't going to spend another $25.00 to replace it with yet another one. Enough was enough. It was time to go for a metal pot.

My first instinct was to stick with what I already knew... Cuisinart. And it just so happened that Cuisinart had a coffee maker with all the requirements I was looking for... A metal (unbreakable) pot, makes 12 cups of coffee, is programmable and stylish.

What Cuisinart offers in their selection, as of April 1st, 2007, is model number DTC-975BKN (black). They also have a white one, but white shows all the coffee stains and makes a new machine look old, I think.

So please let me further clarify this...

If you're looking at these Amazon reviews, that are older than six months ago, then you're looking at Cuisinart's OLD design!

If you're reading the reviews that are older than six months ago, then you're reading the reviews of a coffee maker that Cuisinart DOESN'T MAKE ANYMORE! THEY CHANGED THE DESIGN! SO DON'T GIVE ANY REGARD TO THOSE REVIEWS!

I'm VERY thankful that I realized that Cuisinart redesigned this coffee maker and that I DIDN'T listen to what people had to say about it. I almost didn't buy it and I almost missed out on the best coffee maker on the market!

I'm not kidding. The coffee maker ROCKS!

There's no way on the planet Earth that you could POSSIBLY cause it to spill over. Well... Short of forgetting to place the carafe under the filter. Of course I can't make any insinuations about the intelligence of the people who bought previous models, because I never tried one of their older models myself... But the current model number of DTC-975BKN is 100% idiot proof! It works like a charm!

It's NO different than anything else I've ever seen in your average, run-of-the-mill glass pot coffee maker. You fill the reservoir, scoop in the coffee, screw the top on the pot and stick it under the spring mechanism where the coffee comes out.

Duh.

I mean... On one of the earlier reviews, there was one brain surgeon who even complained that the heated base crapped out after a year of use... NONE of these metal carafe machines EVER HAD a heated base in the first place! EVER! The point of this machine is to keep the coffee hot, WITHOUT means of heating the coffee continuously throughout the day!

****sigh****

I've gotten into the habit of pre-heating the carafe with hot water that I re-use daily. I just keep reheating water from our tea kettle, on the stove, and pour it into the coffee maker's carafe and let it sit for about five minutes while I feed the cat or brush my teeth in the morning. After that five minutes, I just pour the water back into the tea kettle for the next morning. Doing this, allows the carafe to keep the coffee warmer for a much longer period.

The flavor of the coffee is just as good as any I've ever had. It does what it's supposed to do. It makes great coffee... Period. What more could you ask? The flavor of the coffee never changes as time goes on and the coffee stays HOT, after eight hours. Ten hours is when it starts to get cooler, but it's still warm enough to drink. Twelve hours and it's gotten cool, if you haven't emptied it by then. In our house, 12 cups are usually gone in six hours or less. But one day I experimented and got those results.

I'm happy as a pig in slop to have this coffee maker. To think that I almost didn't get it, because of some of the comments I read, based on earlier models, makes me shake my head.

Yes, it beeps after it's done. So what. Our old Cuisinart did too and we're used to it ourselves. Unless you sleep in the kitchen, it's NOT loud enough to wake you up.

And yes it stands taller than your average machine. So what. The walls of the metal carafe are thicker than glass pots, because of the need to insulate it. If you want a carafe that holds 12 cups of coffee, then you have to have it bigger on the outside. Right? Therefore, it gonna' be a bigger coffee maker.

Do yourselves a favor... Get this machine. It does everything it says it will.

I have to say I was a bit sceptical but it works as advertised. Only problem I have is that I did not close the coffee filter bin fully one of the first times and woke to a HUGE mess. I won't do that again, pure user error. The only other problem is that you can not just have it brew at a specified time without the alarm, not really a big deal. ->Cheap Cuisinart DTC-975BKN Programmable Automatic Brew-and-Serve 12-Cup Thermal Coffeemaker, Black

I've been using a Mr. Coffee thermal carafe coffee maker for years, and I love the concept of not using a burner to slow-cook your coffee. Unfortunately, I've also had to acclimate myself to luke-warm coffee. There were tricks to improve the performance, such as running hot water through the carafe before brewing, but those were only marginally successful. I'd also like to be able to roll out of bed and have the coffee ready, but my old Mr. Coffee didn't have a programmable timer. So when I was considering an upgrade to a programmable version, I was concerned about whether the coffee would get even colder with the new model. I scoured the reviews of other thermal-carafe-type makers specifically looking for the words "luke warm." This is why I steered away from the Krups and went for the Cuisinart, and I'm so glad I did. I was pleasantly surprised after my first cup from the Cuisinart. The coffee was actually hot, and I didn't even need to prewarm the carafe with hot water before brewing. This is important, since needing to prewarm defeats the purpose of having a programmable timer. Also, I like the fact the lid fits snug on the carafe, even during the brewing cycle, which means the coffee is still hot even if I can't drag myself out of bed right away. My old Mr. Coffee was not like that, and in 30 minutes, the coffee went from luke-warm to luke-room-temp! The only cons so far are minor: (1) my first shipment arrived with a cracked lid, but Amazon was quick to respond with a replacement; (2) it's unfortunate that you can't disable the audible beeping when brewing is complete, but it's not really loud enough to wake the house as another reviewer put it; (3) the carafe lid takes some effort to open and close, so older folks, or those with arthritis, might have difficulty with this unit; and (4) the "Auto" indicator on the display, which identifies the unit is programmed, is tough to see for us "40 somethings". Those minor issues aside, however, it's attractive, easy to program and brews a nice cup of hot coffee.

We just recently purchased this Cuisinart coffee maker, after much hesitation. I really wasted a lot of time that I could have been enjoying this coffee maker. i was not sure if it would fit under my cabinets, but it not only fits but liiks great also. My husband works different shifts of 12 hours each, our schedules are really crazy, however I can get up two hours later and the coffee is just as good and as hot as when he made it earlier. It never has that cooked stale coffe taste. The only problem we have that the coffee is so good I wish it held 14 cups instead of 12. You will certainly enjoy this coffee maker, especially you shift workers out there!

by: Debra Jacobs on date: May 21, 2007

->Prices Cuisinart DTC-975BKN Programmable Automatic Brew-and-Serve 12-Cup Thermal Coffeemaker, Black

I've had this Cuisinart coffee maker for over a year and still rave about it. My husband has mentioned several times that I should write a review, and I decided it's high time to do so. It's performed flawlessly for 365+ days, and it gets used every single day.

I like good, hot coffee every morning. As a coffee drinker for more than 20 years, I've gone through more coffee makers than I care to count. I only make a half a pot, and I drink it slowly. With coffee makers that featured a warming element instead of the thermal carafe, this meant stale, burnt coffee. Also, I am often able to wake up whenever I wake up. Even if I had a programmable coffee maker before, I wasn't able to use it. Again, without a thermal carafe, even the very first cup could taste burnt by the time I poured it.

Those days are gone! I program my Cuisinart to brew my coffee fairly early in the morning--just in case I'm up early. Whether I pour a cup right after it's brewed or hours later, the coffee is hot and tastes fresh. On a few occasions, I've forgotten to rinse out the carafe until night time. Amazingly, the little leftover coffee that might be in the carafe is still hot even then!

I have a soft brush for washing the inside of the carafe that I use only once every several days. The stainless steel interior makes a simple rinsing all that is necessary most of the time. No build up. No stale, musty taste.

I like simple things to be simple. I could tell how to use this coffee maker without even consulting the instructions. (I did glance through them just to make sure.) Nothing difficult here. I was delighted with my first use, and I am still delighted. The outer surface cleans up with a simple wiping and looks as good today as it did straight out of the box.

I have the white model of the Cuisinart DTC-975N. If I absolutely had to name something that could be improved with this Cuisinart, I suppose I would say it's the lack of contrast between the guide words on the lid--"open," "close," and "pour"--and the white. The words are raised, but because they are also in white, they are hard to read. But since the word "pour" indictes where the opening in the lid lines up with the spout, it's a no-brainer. The coffee won't pour unless it's lined up. Simple.

I am big on comparison shopping. This coffee maker became one on my "short list" because it had all the features I wanted and was priced reasonably. (I see it's come down a little in price since I purchased it.) I also read all the reviews of this coffee maker before purchasing it. I liked that most indicated that the coffee stayed hot, and that is absolutely true. A few reviews mentioned a problem with the screw-top lid. As another reviewer mentioned, the lid does need to be screwed on correctly, but it's plain to see if it isn't. Same thing with the basket. There's only one way to put the basket in correctly. You drop it in the way it obviously fits. Since it you can clearly see that it doesn't fit if you put it in contrary to the way it aligns in the receptacle, I don't see how someone would get this wrong. Like I said, it's wonderfully easy to use, which is one reason I'm so happy with it.

Since I have no indication that I will need to replace this coffee maker for many years to come, my only hope is that if and when it does come time to purchase another coffee maker, this Cuisinart will still be in production. This is the only coffee maker I would ever want.

The design of this thing is horrible. Unless the carafe, carafe lid, coffe basket and basket holder are exactly in the right locations, the coffee will back up and run all over the place. You will need to watch it start to be sure you do not make a mess. Thus it can not really be used in the auto mode (unless you like mopping up 8 cups of coffee from the counter and floor.

It does make decent coffee, but so what!

I picked this maker up at our local recycling center (ie dump). I've been using a single cup maker for a while; but that's not a coffee maker for when company is over. Took my find home, cleaned it up, and it seemed to work fine. However, last weekend, I was making a full 12c pot, and came in to find a good amount of coffee on the counter. I took out the carafe, and it was about 1/2 full. Assuming that the coffee on the counter and carafe stand was the balance, I lifted the entire maker to dump the liquid in the sink. I didn't realize that the basket was full, however; and the hot coffee spilled all over my wrist, causing 2nd degree scald burns. For some reason, the pause&serve value had malfunctioned. I really don't know why. Some coffee made it into the carafe, some made it on to the counter, and most stayed in the basket. After treating the wound, I made a 2nd pot, and watched it like a hawk. Absolutely no problems. So, I have no idea. Should you get it? It does make good coffee, and keeps it warm for hours. But, beware of my experience and make sure the basket is empty before moving the maker.

->Sale Cuisinart DTC-975BKN Programmable Automatic Brew-and-Serve 12-Cup Thermal Coffeemaker, Black

I haven't had the coffee maker long enough to know reliability, but it's a Cuisinart and I have never had a problem with any of their other products, so let's assume the same thing here. It looks pretty slick, although if your kitchen can handle it I would recommend the black and stainless, just because the white stains so quickly from the coffee, even if you're careful about washing it right away.
What can I say - it's a nice coffee maker, but I'm not certain it's worth the price. I have always had regular coffee makers in the past, and I was very excited about the carafe option. However, in my experience, at the end of about six hours the coffee is already cool and not so tasty. Basically it has the shelf life of coffee in a thermos without the extra step, which is handy, but maybe not worth the extra cost compared to a regular coffee maker. If you know you're going to go through a couple cups in the morning then it sure beats making a cup, then cleaning the grinder and everything and starting over an hour later! I will say the instructions make it clear you should do a warm water run first to heat the carafe - maybe that makes the coffee stay hot much longer, but I don't have time for that in the morning. One reason I purchased this was for the programmable option (which is great), which means the coffee is ready for me first thing. If you have the time and energy to spend warming the carafe - knock yourself out...

I will also say that I see why some of the other reviewers were frustrated by the set up process. This is NOT a big deal, but you do have to pay attention. Once you've done it once your fine, but compared to the many coffee makers I have used in my day, this one is just a breath more intensive. The top needs to be perfectly sealed and pointed the right way, and the basket really does need to be pushed shut. Big deal? No, but you do have to pay attention.

Aside from that, it makes a nice tasting cup of coffee in a short time and I am pretty happy with it so far.
