I previously had this coffeemaker in black and I loved it so much I decided to purchase it in white when my kitchen decor changed. I love the delay brew feature which allows me to have a fresh cup of coffee as soon as I wake up in the morning without doing a thing. My mother-in-law also bought this exact coffeemaker after coming for a visit and seeing mine. It really is an excellent coffeemaker and I would recommend it to anyone.

I've been using this coffee maker everyday for almost a year and, in general, it functions just fine. The single aspect of this machine's design which has infuriated me and my wife is the manner in which it emits five very loud, high-pitched piercing tones when the coffee finishes brewing and three of these tones when the two hour burner timer expires. These tones are audible in every room of our house and are extremely annoying.
Today, after spending an hour and fifteen minutes attempting to get my toddler to take a nap, the coffee maker emitted its usual piercing tones and woke him up just as he was drowsing off. After this, I decided to open the coffee maker and disable the speaker/buzzer. Unfortunately, there are six screws on the bottom of the coffee maker and two of them are proprietary torx type screws which will not come out with normal screwdrivers. I was able to remove the other four screws and pry the bottom open far enough to reach inside to disconnect an unlabled connector which, by a stroke of luck, was the connector to the speaker/buzzer. So now the horrible piercing tones have been disabled but the four screws will not re-seat into the bottom of the coffee maker so the bottom is left gaping open and flaps open/closed each time we move the coffee maker. Overall, I would say that whomever designed this coffee maker is such a poor engineer that he/she should be removed from his position and placed in a clerical job.

I love this coffepot. It looks great as well as makes great coffee.
I love that I can set it for stronger coffee and it uses less coffee.
I love that it shuts off automatically.
I love that I can wake up to the aroma of fresh coffee.
I LOVE that I can pull the pot out to pour a cup before the whole pot is full.
I love the little green light on the clock.
Yeah, I love it! I DON'T love that I paid $49.99 plus tax for it when it's now available for so much less here with free shipping! ;)

Pricey, slick, pleasing to the eye...all are attributes of this coffee maker...and it does make a really good cup of coffee. Problem?..The operational buttons, etc. are virtually unreadable and unnecessarily small. Hey, there are 77 million Baby Boomers...can't you guys make this thing easier to read...especially for morning use? ARGH!...

I have had several varieties of coffeemaker, but this one really is the one to get: It has an LCD clock face at the front -- making it easy to read the time of day and this also doubles as "elapsed time" when having brewed coffee. It can come on in the morning -- a real bonus before getting to work, as the smell of the just-made coffee wafts upstairs before the clock alarm comes on, helping to arouse and awaken more gently (I often turn the alarm off before it goes off, so that I can get off downstairs to enjoy the coffee). The colour is great too - not the usual black or white common with coffeemakers nowadays, making it a focal point of the kitchen - everyone asks where I got it!

The electronics quit so off to the trash it went. Amazon sent me another as they made a model mistake on my order. They sent me the same one again, not what I originally ordered! So have had a bad exprience all the way around.I am now using the 2nd one (same model). Hope I get more then 6 weeks out of it. It has nice features, too bad its not quality. Does make pretty good coffee. I would not buy it again even though it is inexpensive.

I have owned two of these machines, having just bought my second after the first suddenly stopped heating water after about 3 years of reliable service.
Why did I buy the same machine again after 3 years? The reason is that it makes very good coffee and occupies a middle price point where few others seem to reside. Also, this machine is somewhat less junky than most you will see in the store. After looking at a number of them, I just couldn't bring myself to buy one of those ultra-flimsy pieces of garbage, regardless of price. I'm not saying that this Mr. Coffee is machined out of solid steel, but it IS of somewhat sturdier construction.
As I mentioned, the coffee is excellent. My only complaint is the little water filter thing, which you can't buy just anywhere, and which you end up never replacing.
This is one of the best values in coffee makers under $80.

Until a week ago, I'd have given this coffee maker four stars because it has brew-strength control. Last week, though, the clock face turned entirely black and this morning the unit completely malfunctioned. The shut off alarm sounded after only an hour but when I went into the kitchen to salvage the last of the coffee, I discovered the unit was still on. Draining the pot, I attempted to shut the unit off manually and it kept coming back on. I finally got it shut off and 10 minutes later it turned itself back on again. After unplugging it, the unit went into the trash. I strongly suspect steam was able to get into the mechanism causing the electronics to short circuit. Obviously, it is a fatal design flaw--or a clever ploy to force people to buy more coffee makers. In all, it lasted about eight months.

It brews good coffee, looks great. Problem is it leaks (a lot) onto the burner and below the unit. We have sent it back and had 2 replacements. All three started leaking within a few weeks. I am now looking for another make or model of coffee maker as it appears they have not been able to resolve the leakage problem with this machine.
->Purchase Mr. Coffee 12-Cup Programmable Cone Coffeemaker, Black
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this coffee maker. It doesn't leak or drip. I can find absolutely nothing wrong with it, other than the lid of the caraffe not fitting too snugly, but it only comes off when I dump the thing upside down. Definitely not an occurrence during regular pouring.
I've had tooo many coffee makers that are messy, leaky and hard to clean. This is the only caraffe I've ever had which doesn't spill when you pour.
I love the water filter system, and it makes a great cup of coffee. I've had trouble finding the replacement filters at the store, but you can get them on Amazon easily. Other features include a warmer base for which you can regulate the temperature. If you like your coffee warmer, set it to a higher level. If you're a tongue burner like me, you can set it at a lower temperature. The machine tells you when the coffee is ready with a series of beeps, and also does the same when it shuts off. I like that.
I don't understand why people don't like it - I recommend it highly!!! Plus, it is a beautiful machine.

BE ADVISED THAT THE CLOCK IS PRONE TO MECHANICAL FAILURE!!! I have returned a "sister" version of this coffee pot THREE times. The first time was just a broken carafe, but the 2nd and 3rd times were mechanical failures. After the 1st return, I repurchased the same pot. Within one month, the entire clock faded to black and would not work, which meant NO timer functioning. I thought that this was a fluke, so I returned the pot (again!) and got another one. After 3 months, the clock still worked, but the option to set the clock or turn on the timer just STOPPED working. Out of the blue! So, it too was returned. I don't think I'll be buying any Mr. Coffee products again. BE ADVISED THAT THE CLOCK IS PRONE TO MECHANICAL FAILURE!!!
*By the way, I have had the same problems as everyone else (overflowing at filter, dripping onto the burner, etc.), but I could deal with them as long as my morning coffee was actually made in the morning.

- Leakage problems do occur as other reviewers have pointed out, for me about every 6 brews or so. It can happen if you don't seat the carafe precisely. It's a mess; coffee spills onto the burner and leaks from the bottom of the machine. Not pretty.
- Only 900W. Coffee isn't hot enough right when brewed (I pour cup then microwave it for 30 seconds). I've heard tell that in order to extract the oils and flavors from the coffee bean, you need at least 1000W of power. This comes just shy.
- With the carafe design (slick-looking, but impractical), you have to completely invert it (upside down) to shake out the last few ounces when pouring, also when you are cleaning it, water will stay trapped under the lip unless you shake it upside down.
- I am a coffee snob of late, so I plan to plunk down the cash for a high powered machine with a thermal carafe (deciding between the economical "Zojirushi EC-BD15BA" or the pricey "Capresso MT-500").
->Cheap Mr. Coffee 12-Cup Programmable Cone Coffeemaker, Black
I have not had any of the spillage or steam problems that a lot of people seem to have. My problem with the coffee maker is that it just doesn't always make a good cup of coffee.
First of all, when I got the coffee maker I was surprised to find that to make the same strength of coffee I was use to, I had to use DOUBLE the amount of coffee grounds than I did usually. So I go through coffee a lot more quickly than I did before.
I always make coffee the same way, using the same amount of water and the same amount of grounds. At times the coffee is fine, but at times it is extremely weak... so weak I have to spend extra time to make more coffee (a crucial part of my morning!) The "strength" selector is completely worthless, I don't notice any difference in my coffee whatsoever.
Furthermore, the digital analog clock face, while it may be aesthetically pleasing to some focus group, is REALLY annoying when you are trying to set the timer. You have a digital clock, put digital numbers on it please.
Finally the "coffee temperature" knob is useless unless you plan on drinking coffee at least 15 minutes after you make it. If you drink the coffee right when it comes off the pot its barely warm.

Color me dense, but after going through 8 Mr. Coffee coffeemakers in the past 10 years I'm tossin' in the towel!
The longest period of time that one has lasted was about 18 months. I just think that a person should be able to get more than 12 to 18 months of use out of a $40 to $50 coffeemaker that is used to make only one pot of coffee per day. The problem with 5 of these 8 coffeemakers was the heating plate going out...ie just ceasing to heat at all. The problem with the other 3 was leakage...massive leakage, as in an instantaneous rupture in the water tank and the entire content emptying within a few seconds!
So, after having cleaned up my most recent Mr. Coffee spill just a few minutes ago, I have finally (duh) decided it is time to give up on Mr. Coffee coffeemakers and never allow one of the foul quality beasts to darken my countertop again!
My advise is...if anyone wants to buy a new $40 to $50 coffeemaker every year or so, buy a Mr. Coffee...otherwise steer clear of this poor quality product and shop for another brand. As to which brand of coffeemaker?...I have yet to discover that answer as I type this, but as I am searching I can promise one thing...it definitely will NOT be a Mr. Coffee product!
This is the first comment/complaint I have ever written about a product on Amazon, but I was so peeved about this last mess I had to clean up that I felt the need to vent a bit.

Well, I bought this at the mall type place without much selection. But I have to say that it does leak in areas that you are not looking at (I have no clue where it leaks). I have to also blame the ground beans everywhere on the counter on this machine. I am sorry to say I am switching to something else once I save up some dough.

I was skeptical to say the least after reading some reviews. I am VERY pleasantly surprised by how much I love this coffee maker. It is simple to use, the clock is wonderful, the timer is a breeze plus keeps the time you like to set it for, all you do is push one button then to set it, the coffee is smooth ( I can actually taste a difference!), the carafe pours like a dream, and cleaning is simple. I have no issues with filling the machine with water, no issues with leaking, no issues with drying the carafe. The one thing it has done, is lifted slightly on the right side top from the steam escaping after it has brewed. Odd, but doesnt pose a problem. Just thought that was due to using too cheap a plastic on the top part that lifts up. That dial for the hot plate temp setting WORKS! I love a hot cup of coffee and just setting it slightly past the middle top keeps is nice and hot. I cannot imagine the intense heat if you set it up all the way! I do however notice no difference between regular brew strength, and strong brew. Only a time difference. Brews quickly , only takes about 6 to 8 minutes on regular brew, and about 10 on strong.
I highly recommend you give this machine a shot. It is simply wonderful!

In the past year I have had two of these coffeemakers and my mother has had two. None have lasted more than 6 months!N In fact, my mother's last one worked for less than one month! It is a guessing game to see how many cups you have in the morning. Mr. Coffee has replaced, no questions asked. But it is not worth the trouble.

I read the reviews, and had to weigh in...I'm a coffee fanatic who shopped long and hard for a good solid model to replace my trusty Krups that died after 11 loyal years. Sad as I was to see it go, I was easliy won over by Mr. Coffee! I have had the unit for over 3 months, and brew 1-2 pots a day, every day. The coffee is really delicious - rich and smooth, never bitter. It's probably not coffee house good, but it's home-brewed fantastic.
I only gave it 4 stars, because I do wish the carafe design was a little different. The mouth is small (which succeeds in keeping the coffee nice & hot), but it is a bit hard to clean and fully dry (lots of condensation). I've comprimised by giving it a quick wash, and leaving the top flap open to air dry till the next brew. Overall, this small step is more than worth it.
The adjustment for plate temperature is fantastic, the unit looks nice on the counter, and the timer never fails me at 7:00 AM. Sweet. I'm glad I researched this decision, and bought this unit - so far so good. And about coffee/flavor, I am extremely picky. A solid, reliable coffe pot at a moderate price = happy early mornings!

I have owned mine for 14 months and have had no problems what so ever. It works great. Cool clock, programmable timer, retro design. It does not leak at all but there is some occassional dripping when you pour your coffee but that is more condensation than bad design. It does beep a bit loudly when it is finished brewing and after 2 hours when the burner is turning off.

I loved our new cofee maker. Has a cool clock, delay brew feature, permanant filter and was very nice looking. It really jazzed up my kitchen. I was utterly in love with it for a about a month. The damn thing leaks. There is basically a puddle of water under it every time I use it. I still do love it (not the leaking) If you prefer to not spend your time mopping up puddles of water, try the new model with the stainless steel carafe.

I bought this machine a couple years ago after I got sick of that pretentious plunger pot crap and just want good old fashioned coffee like Mom used to make. I looked around for the machine with the most features like a timer and a reusable filter and one that you can pull the pot out before it is all done brewing and pour your first cup without a big mess. Also it turns off by itself. This thing has all of those features and it has worked flawlessly from the beginning. It is also very fast so I dont have to wait for that first cup, Faster even than the microwave. I can't believe all the negative reviews, Maybe their is some inconsistancy at the manufacturer. Maybe a disgruntled employee with a beef with "The Yankee Clipper" is sabotaging every 3rd machine off the belt. Or perhaps, God forbid, could operator error be to blame? Is it possible that some consumers lack the ability to treat a coffeemaker like the precision instrument that it is? I don't know. (of course we have to consider too, that it could be that Starbucks has an entire division in New Dehli dedicated to writing nasty online reviews for every home coffee maker for obvious reasons. Did I forget my meds today?) Anyways, I have owned lots of devices for making coffee, including expensive Bunn machines, and I must say that this one is really fantastic. I have either bought or recommended it to every one I know. I've even got a couple of my Mormon friends almost convinced; but I'm not holding my breath.

My experience with this coffeemaker was the same as the numerous reviews already written here. It just stopped working one day about three months after we bought it. JUST STOPPED WORKING. Of course, this was after the 90 day limited warranty, so there was forty dollars down the drain. We have friends who bought this same machine repeatedly, with the same results we had. I have gone so far as to catch someone in Wal-Mart who had this in their cart, and warn them about it. They promptly put it back and selected something else...heehee.

I've had one of these at the office for 2 years+ and have had no issues at all, my father in law has one and has had no issues, and I purchased another one for our home just recently. Very pleased. Looks great. I may be wrong, but I think the leaking stems from one of two things: using paper filters and overfilling, and the grounds then plug up the hole diverting the coffee, or possibly the carafe isn't complete nestled on the hot plate, thereby releasing the pause and serve feature. If my first assumption is right, a permanent filter may resolve it. I have had it leak once or twice, but it was due to one of those reasons. Overall, great maker, affordable, and looks great. Price seems strange--just bought mine at Amazon a few weeks ago for $37. I got the black model.

I had the typical cheap Mr Coffee maker in college, so when I got married I decided to upgrade to this unit which looks so much more distingushed. As so many others said, this thing leaks like crazy. And not just coffee onto the burner, but apparently through the bottom of the machine. I'm not sure if the leak underneath is coffee or rust from some internal parts, but we have put this thing on a towel and then on a plastic mat. Now that it is starting to stain our counter, it's time to go. Also, the carafe is poorly designed as I think in the past 2 years I may have poured 2 cups of coffee when it didn't run down the carafe as I was pouring. I wish I still had my el cheapo that never gave me any problems.

I bought this coffeepot in April (except mine has the thermal carafe). At first I thought this machine was wonderful and I loved all the "extras". However after the first week I noticed coffee all over my counter and underneath the coffeemaker. We noticed that the mechanism in the basket was sprung so that the drip spout would not come down properly and the coffee could not drip into the pot. We called Mr. Coffee and they sent us a new basket. The new basket did the trick however we were afraid to take the basket out to clean it properly for fear that the mechanism would get messed up again. We have only taken it out to clean it very sparingly and the last time we did last week (early November) we had coffee all over the counter again. One look at the basket and it was sprung again. I bought another coffeemaker this weekend and am planning to throw this monster away. A good coffeemaker should last longer than 7 months!!!!

After reading the reviews for this and other coffee makers, I concluded everyone is having quality control problems. I sympathize with the folks who have gone through two or three lemons before finding something that performed as advertised. I've had that experience and it can make you crazy.
But I loved the cool looks of this thing the first time I saw one at the home of friends in Alma, Colo. They were happy with theirs and it performed well at 10,600 feet in the Colorado Rockies.
So I rolled the dice and bought one at Wal-Mart, but took care to keep the receipt in case they were having a bad day on the Third World assembly line when my coffee maker was being built.
I've used it daily for three weeks now and it's performed perfectly. No leaks, no overflowing, no fires or explosions. Just good coffee.
And I like the fact that it turns itself off after two hours so I don't have to worry about whether I turned off the coffee maker when I'm out running my morning errands.

I bought this before I read the reviews. I love the design as it doesn't take up much space on the counter. It has a clock that you can see at night. We've had no problems what so ever. No leaking behind the machine or on the burner as many of these reviewers are experiencing. We even took the coffeepot out while it was still brewing to pour a cup and no drips on the burner. Makes an excellent cup of coffee. You have your choice of regular or stronger brewing. Comes with a gold permanent filter basket so you don't have to use those paper filters. You can program this so it will be ready when you get up the next day which really saves time in the morning or a few hours later. Shuts off automatically after 2 hours which is a good safety feature. Has a cleaning function which they recommend to clean after approximately 80 times. You can use Mr. Coffee cleaner or use white vinegar which is what I use. It's too bad that it got really bad reviews but I have to say that this is the best coffeemaker that we've had so far and I've gone through alot of them because they either broke down or I just couldn't keep it clean or it was too much work to keep it clean.

I love to wake up to the smell of fresh brewed coffee every morning. Also that it stays hot for 2 hours, in time for a morning coffee break after chores. I say "Buy it and try it, You'll love it".

I alway liked this manufacturer and when our high end maker went, I opted for this model. It lasted less than four weeks in my house.
I never could get a good pot of coffee from it. The "warming base" never really kept the coffee hot, for a decent period. And, the small writing on the faces and gauges, really could not be easily seen, causing further confusion and aggravation.
Mr. Coffee should stick to the four cup makers and less varities.

I bought this coffee maker a little over 2 weeks ago aand I love it.
Pros:It is attractive, it is more compact and narrower than many programable machines, it makes great coffee, adjustable heat hot plate, Adjustable brew strength.
Cons: It beeps loudly 5 times when coffee is finished brewing. Not everyone in my household gets up at the same time in the morning- at least we didn't until the machine started waking us. No way to adjust or turn the beeping off.
I haven't had any of the problems mentioned by other reviewers (knock on wood). Glad I bought it!

The quick-pour feature, which should allow you to pour a cup of coffee while the pot's still brewing, has never worked. We tried it a few times, but it always resulted in coffee streaming all over the place. Now, due to the fact that some of the coffee must have baked onto the warming plate (after we quickly replaced the carafe) the plate's coating is chipping off. I imagine it's a safety hazard. Somehow, the brewed coffee also leaks out the bottom of the base at least 2 times/week. Fortunately, I've been able to clean it up before it's stained my counters. Finally, the condensation has "blanked out" the clock on two separate occasions. The coffee maker was given to me as a gift (a replacement, in fact, for Mr. Coffee's poorly-manufactured 10-cup thermal coffee maker), or I would have returned it immediately. Now I'm outside the store's 90-day return window. It's a shame that Mr. Coffee can't seem to produce a safe & reliable coffee maker! Like so many others, I'll never purchase another Mr. Coffee product.

I had a free-gift Gevalia coffeemaker for about 3 yrs and it was fine, but very basic. I was ready for a programmable model, and was debating over the Cuisinart one that grinds the beans and has a thermal carafe, but that was about 100 bucks more than this Mr Coffee. I decided to get this Mr C and a separate burr grinder for the beans ( so I could also grind the beans for my stovetop cappucino maker, which I love too- and have reviewed on Amazon-Bialetti "Mukka Express Polished", Stove Top Cappuccino Maker )
This is a beautiful machine and looks much more expensive than it is. I was so pleasantly surprised by the green glowing clock, it gives a space age look and offers a nice little night light in the kitchen too. Last night after I did the 1st run through with water, I set it up to brew at 7 am. Well, I got up this morning and there was my little pot of coffee waiting patiently for me! The timer let me know that it had been sitting on the burner for 45 mins. Well, even after sitting for 45 mins, it was the smoothest tasting coffee! No burny taste whatsoever. Not only that , but excellent taste, though I would like it stronger, so next time I will also set the brew strength to strong.
I had no problems with drips or leaks, but I see from other reviewers that those problems sometimes develop over time. We shall see, I hope not.
Oh, the hot plate can be set to various heat levels, I have it at the middle and it kept the coffee quite hot. I will try it next time to keep it even hotter.
There is a beep cycle that beeps 5 beeps when the coffee is done, and 3 beeps when the burner is being shut off automatically ( I believe it is after 2 hrs)
I like how the machine is small, modern looking, space agy, and how the burn plate is non stick, that pot just glides on and off the burner like it is floating.
If anything changes , I will follow up in this review, but so far, I am more than happy with this adorable coffemaker.

We bought the red version in Aug 2005 to complement my very white kitchen. I was very disappointed from the start. First off, it took forever to brew a pot of coffee. While brewing, coffee would leak under the pot itself...not sure how. The biggest problem we had though....the sides of the coffee machine started to melt after one year of use! THe red paint was black, like it was burnt and was peeling off, the actual sides of the coffee machine looked as if they coming off.
We threw this away and bought a new machine...needless to say NOT a Mr. Coffee....

I've had this coffee pot for almost two years now, and once in awhile a hose decides to pop off and then all the water just run's out. And like every review I read I have coffee all the time under my coffee pot all the time don't know where it's coming from but it's driving me crazy. I paid over 60 dollars for this coffee pot thinking it would be worth the money big joke it is the worse coffee pot I think ever made. Spend the extra money and buy the bunn it's worth every penny. Don't waste your time with this coffee pot. It should have a recall by now. And I'm so sick of putting to much water in it and having the water run all over the cord isn't that going to case a fire. If you just go a little past the 12 mark will have water pouring out of the back of this. This coffee pot shouldn't get any stars.

PROS:
Looks great.
Makes decent coffee.
12 cup capacity.
Programmable.
CONS:
Only one, but it's HUGE. Coffee pot leaks brewed coffee (not plain water) onto the burner and under the coffee maker while brewing. The problem is lessened slightly if you put the pot on the burner EXACTLY head on. My countertop is now hopelessly stained where the coffee maker sits. Makes me wonder if they test these things at all before they send them to market. I won't be buying another Mr. Coffee, ever.

Though I am a die-hard fan of Krups, I decided to save a bit of cash by purchasing this very chic-looking coffee maker in part because of the cool aqua light/clock feature. A mere 9 months later, the aqua light/clock bit the dust and 3 months after that, the coffee maker itself began to emit a bizarre squealing sound that can only be described as something electronically unsafe. I may as well have thrown $50.00 in the garbage can. I take my coffee consumption seriously and will never attempt another Mr. Coffee purchase.

This pot looks great sitting on your counter and is not your basic black or boring white color.
By setting the brew strength you can even get a great cup of strong coffee for those who prefer their coffee Starbucks strong.
The filter is a nice touch and the coffee tastes great.
The stop and serve feature works well and it doesn't drip when you take the carafe out. The clock is bright & easy to read and it is neat to see it tell you how long your coffee has been fresh.
I would buy this pot again for it's great tasting coffee that it makes and for its great looks.

This coffee maker is fantastic!!! My boyfriend remarked tonight that it is the best coffee maker he has ever owned so I thought we should do it justice and write a positive review. I will start out by saying we did have problems with the water filter so we just don't use it. The water filter made the coffee not taste too great and it also did indeed make the coffee overflow a bit, so perhaps this is the root of others' complaints. Previously, we have owned Brauns and Cuisinarts with horrible issues - much worse than a faulty water filter! Recently, we owned a very expensive DeLonghi Retro coffee maker for less than a year that was just awful. Out of the box, the carafe leaked and it took us 3 months to get a replacement which also leaked (and which DeLonghi made us pay for!!). We thought about getting a Cuisinart model which my best friend had at one time. I found out from him that that coffee maker stopped working after only a couple of months so he bought this model. I was so excited that we came straight to Amazon to buy it and saw all of the terrible reviews. We were reticient to purchase this model but my best friend kept going on and on with his glowing reviews and has owned his coffee maker for over a year and a half, so we took the chance. We are so happy that we did! The coffee it brews is delicious, the clock is very helpful (it actually tells you how long the coffee has been sitting there so you know if your coffee is burning) and it looks great too. By the manner of the construction, making coffee and cleaning the unit is easier. We really like the design of the carafe (the feel and shape of it in our hands), the design of the coffee basket and the water reservoir. We feel so bad about the bum rap this coffee maker has gotten and just want to say that it deserves a second look.

Like other reviewers, I experienced leaking coffee, i.e., not water. After looking at the drip process a couple of times, the leaking coffee could only come from one place--where it drips from the brew basket into the carafe. After some trial and error, I found that the maker will not leak if you place the carafe with the handle sticking straight out. Must be something to do with how the coffee pours into the carafe. If the carafe handle is moved right or left of center, the leak comes back. Good luck.

This beautiful coffee maker has a reputation for leaking water. We too had to return our first unit after leaking all over the counter creating electronic water hazards, and the help desk told us to switch the back resevoir rubber piece so the hole faces down (no more leaks). Mr. Coffee was very nice and sent us a new unit right away telling us to cut the cord on the damaged unit. Apparently the units are assembled with the hole facing up instead of down. We loved the coffee (using the Strong setting, paper filter and Mr. Coffee filter), but now 6 months later it suddenly broke. Water leaked, the electronic display steamed up and blacked out, coffee slowly dripped through then burned on the bottom. If you don't mind spending this much $$ for 6 months, get it. I'm giving up since it will cost much more to replace our counters. We've since been very happy with the Cuisinart DCC-1200 Brew Central 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker.

We've been struggling with this machine for the year we've had it. This morning I hit the breaking point, smelling the acrid burning aroma of coffee leaking all over the place, pouring into the sink, onto the floor. I've ordered another, more expensive brand of machine. Don't let the trendy brushed metal surface fool you--Mr. Coffee products are absolutely worthless. You're better off buying powdered coffee or taking a vivarin, or buying from a company that has some quality.

We've had our FTX23 for about 8-months and have had mixed results. For the most part, it brewed coffee okay, if we put it on the Strong setting. It kept the coffee warm, if the temperature dial was set just above mid-point, but we have had our share of leaks that caused a lot of disruption in a small kitchen. However, this week we found our FTX23 coffee machine went belly-up just after it brewed most of the water in its belly. Since expiration it hasn't shown any ability to do anything other than tell time, remind us of its cost, poor toilet training, and its limited lifespan.
Having a unit failure within the warranty period isn't of much benefit when you consider how much things cost box, pack and ship, and the weeks it will take before a coffee aroma is filling the house again. Clearly, a wait until it gets back to Mr. Coffee before we send you another unit could easily be handled with a credit card refund process so insult wouldn't be added to injury and incremental machine expense.

The only positive aspect of this coffee maker is that you can get a very hot cup of coffee.
However, it leaks (as reported by others), and now it is dead 2 months after purchase. It appears to be working, (timer engages, etc.) but nothing happens.

Like many of the other owners of this product, my girlfriend and I were pretty happy with it at first. However, 6 months later, we experienced the same leaking which plagued so many others. On the verge of tossing it, we decided to call Mr. Coffee just to humor ourselves and see if they were willing to do anything for us. To our surprise, they were extremely easy to deal with, and sent us a replacement model- no questions asked. It remains to be seen whether or not they've addressed the issues with the model, but it does restore some confidence in me to see they did the right thing by owning up to their mistake.

I purchased the FX-23 Mr. Coffee over a year ago, hoping I finally found a reliable coffee pot. It took a little longer than some of the other consumers, but it has been leaking for over a month now. A slow leak that leaves just enough water to cover the counter under the pot. Every other brand I've purchased over the years, malfunctioned eventually, but I thought I could count on Mr. Coffee...what a dissapointent. This morning it started making loud crackling sounds as it brewed, now I'm concerned about it being a fire hazard...I give up, I will be going back to a perculator.

I saw the major flaw in my coffeemaker after about a year -- right after the warranty expired, don'tcha know. The problem I had was that coffee -- not plain water -- seeped onto the warmer plate from the outside edges of the plate, during the entire brew cycle. Somehow brewed coffee from the filter basket was running down to the bottom of the unit and seeping back up into the plate! You could watch it happen It was eery, like a B-horror flick about oozing evil slime. It only got worse with time. The burning coffee smell was horrible and the mess was neverending, obviously. My husband declared it a hazard and told me not to use it anymore. I went to the basement to get his old machine from 20-30 years ago -- a Mr. Coffee with all-plastic housing that we keep on hand for decaf at parties. No features except for a "keep warm" setting. It still works great, just ugly as sin in our modern kitchen. This tells me that simplicity is best in a coffeemaker. It's too bad, as I loved the features and the look of the flawed machine. I even bought one for someone for Christmas, before I had my problems. Waiting to hear her tale of woe.

I wrote off our problems with the first one as bad luck. It's a cool looking coffee maker and the coffee isn't too bad. However, it kept thinking it was out of water and would stop brewing after 2 cups had been brewed with 10 cups left in the reservoir. As luck would have it, the replacement maker (the exact same one) worked for about 2 weeks before the same thing happened again. Not sure if Mr. Coffee has a Quality Assurance department, but they might start by reading these reviews.

I have to give it one star because Amazon does not have an option for 0 or negitive ten ( -10 ).
It leaks, it has fiddly parts, the filter shut off plunger is activated by a plastic bobin that falls out of it's plastic holder, becuase the parts are the WRONG SIZE!!! It just keeps comming loose. Even if it worked, the device is designed so that a pool of coffee sits in this plastic part, waiting to start driping a teaspoonfull of coffee when ever you remove the container.
Not only that but the only way to pore the coffee is by removing the contaner top, or pressing the buttion on the container handle, and that broke two.
This looks good but, is junk. We have not one, but TWO defective parts that have broken, or or come loose. Even if they all worked, it would still drip because of the way it's made.
JUNK! JUNK! JUNK!

This is by far the worst coffee maker I have ever owned...and also wins the prize for being the pot that was replaced the quickest. I think we owned it for about 3 months. Whoever designed this thing was an idiot. The basket doesn't always sit correctly and results in coffee pouring out everywhere but in the pot. Coffee ends up all over the counter...and this resulted in the burner plate rusting out and losing it's protective coating. It is a nice looking coffee pot...so it you want to just use it for decorative purposes...this is for you!

I read the reviews below with some curiosity. Could this be the same machine that we (my office) and my parents adore? Purchased at Costco (so it could be a slightly different model -but looks identical). From day one this machine has been putting out great coffee. Clients have even commented how good our coffee is. I was so impressed that I bought one for my parents to replace their tired old Cuisinart last Christmas (2004). They called me the next morning ooohing and aaahing over the machine. They have been extremely satisfied for one year plus. I have had my machine in my office (I have a super automatic Jura cappuccino maker at home) for sixteen months and it has made strong, hot coffee since day one. It has never leaked or done anything else as described in the reviews below. Maybe I got lucky? Twice?

I bought this coffee maker in Januaary of 2005. It worked great right out of the box but by June it was leaking water all over the counter. I sent it back and they replaced it with a new machine at no cost to me. I figured ok that was just a bad one in the bunch. The second machine now has steamed up the clock which is no longer usable therfore making the programmable feture useless. After purchasing the FTX20, I was horrified to see a staggering number of poor reviews here at Amazon.com and elsewhere. The low ratings are even more alarming when you take into account the number of different color combinations and the sum total of the reviews for each incarnation of the same basic model [FTX series coffeemakers], which are sold at Target, Amazon and Costco, among other major retailers.
At this point, I haven't had my FTX20 coffeemaker long enough to encounter any of the notorious leaks, partially brewed coffee pots that fail to complete the cylcle or broken pause-and-serve functions. The one problem I have had, after making just two pots of coffee, is a brew cycle that arbitrarily increased from an average of 13 minutes for 10 cups to 50 minutes for 10 cups. This is similar to the length of time required by the cleaning cycle - except that the cleaning cycle button, which lights up on the front of the stainless steel faceplate when you press the button - was not engaged at the time. Though the unit was barely out of the box, I ran vinegar through it immediately thereafter via the cleaning cycle on the assumption that perhaps some coffee grounds backwashed into the water reservoir (since this is possible if the water filter gasket doesn't clamp down securely, which it frequently fails to do as is noted by many reviewers who have experienced leaking). After running the cleaning cycle everything brews normally again - faster, in fact, than it brewed originally (down to an average of one minute per cup.). However, I'm still keeping a close eye on my FXT20 after reading that the unit could, if left unattended, overheat. The two reviews in which this happened did not indicate HOW the unit managed to so severely overheat as to begin smoking, but my guess is that it had something to do with a brew cycle that just kept on going and going and going and going and never quit to give the internal electronics a break. (After much reading, one theory is that one source of overheating and/or spillage reported by Amazon reviewers may have been caused by a dirty water filter - you are supposed to change it monthly - and/or by stray coffee grounds that seeped back into the water reservoir and got lodged in the internal workings of the coffeemaker, thereby severely slowing or stopping the normal brew cycle even as the heating elements continued to attempt steam the nonexistent water flow).
Although I haven't had any problems in my initial two weeks of ownership, a lot of the other reviewers here apparently didn't have problems in the first 30 to 90 days either - which makes me think that this coffeemaker simply creates an abnormally harsh reaction in response to mineral deposits and other residues that accumulate with normal use (otherwise one would expect it to begin leaking hot coffee on the very first use). In the event that it leaks the FIRST time out of the box, it may also be the case that the coffeemaker cannot tolerate even minor overfilling. In fact, there's a weep hole on the back of the water reservoir that lines up with the 12-cup mark. As a result, it is doubtful that you can exceed 12 cups without seepage out the back of the reservoir. Regardless, any reports of leaking on the order of "Niagara Falls" as one reviewer put it, is disturbing no matter the cause.
At a mere $35 dollars the features and the appearance of the FTX20 are second-to-none. On the one hand, the FTX20 offers cord storage, an audible tone to alert you to a completed brew cycle, a two-hour keep warm feature, a cleaning cycle, a brew strength selector, pause-and-serve and a backlit analog inspired digital clock that doubles as a nightlight. On the other hand, maybe there was a REASON it was being sold so cheaply (other than the fact that it was a Costco buy). Still, I wouldn't entirely count it out - after all, this model has been marketed for nearly two full years as best I can tell and may have been improved upon in the interim. If you find it for less than $40 and choose to take your chances, however, I would definitely KEEP your box and your receipt (as is good practice with any product during the return and/or warranty period). Moreover, I wouldn't consider the FTX series coffemaker as a gift buy for someone unsuspecting of its potential quirks and/or design flaws.
Since I have nearly 90 days to return my coffeemaker if something should fail, I may opt to watch this unit for signs of malfunction (and report it to the proper authorities if it does). Until I trust it to function reliably, though, I won't be using the delayed brew setting (this is tolerable only because I'm a social coffee drinker and not a java junkie). Finally, I urge anyone who has experienced potential safety problems to REPORT it to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission at http://www.cpsc.gov. If you don't take it upon yourself to report something that will potentially scald or injure someone, Mr. Coffee will have little motivation to work quickly to improve product safety and reliability.
Interestingly, Mr. Coffee must be well aware of this problem judging from some seeming design modifications I observed recently with respect to what otherwise appears to be identical to the FTX20. The FTXSS23 appears to be identical but for the fact that it sports a stainless steel exterior with a plastic faceplate. Whereas the typical FTX series from Mr. Coffee consists of a plastic exterior available in a variety of colors with stainless steel used only to accent the control panel and design, the FTXSS23 is primarily stainless with the control panel (or faceplate) in black plastic. If you are shopping in a retail store such as Target, take a look. Whether you look at the photo on the Mr. Coffee box - or examine the floor sample - you will note that it appears identical but for the underside of the lid, which has been redesigned to include a perforated metal "cap" affixed to the inside of the lid. When the large flip-up lid containing the metal disc-shaped cap is down, it aligns with the water filter, which in the FXT series coffeemakers sits directly over the coffee filter. With the new lid design it appears that the metal disc weights the lid (or the water filter gasket) in such a way as to prevent it from dislodging or floating when the water runs through a brew cycle. In this way, I imagine, it would prevent the notorious spills that many users here at Amazon.com are reporting within the first few weeks or months of purchase. BUT before you gow out and buy the FTXSS23, note that Amazon reviewers are continuing to describe it as "leaky". Perhaps the filter displacement issue has been fixed, but the weep hole - or the plastic gasket that covers the weep hole - has not changed, which may be one reason that leaks continue to be reported. (Whether such leaks are reported primarily by those who typically brew to the unit's 12-cup capacity would be a point of distinction; unfortunately, reviewers don't typically indicate at what water level they have filled the reservoir before experiencing the notorious leakage.)
Regardless of the model purchased, what doesn't make sense is that Mr. Coffee is STILL selling units like the FTX20 that do NOT have any obvious modifications whatsoever to prevent the frustrating and potentially dangerous malfunctions described so frequently by reviewers. Consequently, I would urge anyone coming here to report their negative experience to do the same thing over on the CPSC Website (there's a Web form under the consumer complaint link; just fill the form out like you would otherwise do here at Amazon.com to submit your review - except that no registration is required.) Bringing down the rating here is good for prospective buyers doing research, but reporting your experience to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission will potentially spare people who are not accustomed to doing this sort of research aggravation if not outright injury.
It has often been stated, wistfully so, that Mr. Coffee was once a trusted brand. Unfortunately, the phrase "you get what you pay for" is not the predictor of quality that it once was. We've all heard, for example, of the relatively cheap import cars that keep going reliably, while some expensive luxury makes need considerable repairs on short order. And we've seen how an appliance that sells at Costco for less than $40 retails for over $70 elsewhere. Take my old Proctor-Silex programmable 12-cup coffeemaker: It cost $13 at a drugstore three years ago, and after running some LimeAway through it, it began to work as good as new (faster than the Mr. Coffee with none of the problems reported by reviewers here).Even Consumer Reports has noted the irony that some of your cheap drugstore appliances outlast your $100 premium-brand appliances. Ditto for name-brand loyalty. Most companies go through mergers, bankruptcy, management changes and pressure by big chains like Wal-Mart to shave, shave, shave and cut, cut, cut costs. Consequently, the company you knew 10-20 years ago isn't the company it once was (other than the familiar name). Consider, for example, what happens when companies begin manufacturing their products to satisfy their mainstay distributors such as Wal-Mart. In many cases, it matters little where you choose to actually make your purchases because manufacturers who do business with the likes of Wal-Mart are unlikely to deem it cost effective to re-tool their production lines and re-assign their design teams just to sell a better crafted version of an identical product for higher-end retailers. Sure, they may stamp a different number on the model, but the mechanics and parts are often similar if not identical. In this way, the lowest common denominator becomes the trendsetter, sometimes for an entire company's product line! So if Wal-Mart says they will only pay $8 per coffeemaker because their resale value is only $35, guess what you'll get after 10 million of these appliances are manufactured - a whole lot of cheapened products reaching all the manufacturer's distributors, whether it be destined for Macy's or K-Mart. Again, if only more consumers would simply report when an appliance fails to function or poses a danger maybe manufacturers and their cost-shaving distributors would get the message and agree to up the quality/safety. But to regain our authority as "consumer kings", we first have to demonstrate that we know their scam and DEMAND they listen ("they" being people at the top of management, not the lowly customer service reps who answer a company's 1-800 number). In the end, only one thing has NOT changed: The customer, as they say in the retail industry, is always right. Why? Because we hold the checkbook, debit cards and cold-hard cash.

After discovering here at Amazon.com that I had purchased a potentially dangerous coffeemaker (judging by the things others have written and experienced with this model), I began searching the Internet far and wide only to discover that the folks here at Amazon.com are NOT alone in their experience with this coffeemaker. There are problems of the sort that might even catch Ralph Nader's attention. Consequently, I decided to write a review summarizing not only my own personal experience, which I've recapped below, but also that which appeared to be a repeating theme in other reviews. After a day or so, though, my review was removed, presumably by the safety-conscience employees at Amazon.com.
Perhaps my cardinal offense had something to do with the title, in which I urged people who have experienced spewing and leaking scalding hot coffee to contact the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission at www.cpsc.gov. Hey, I realize advice like that may not engender confidence to buy this product from Amazon, but neither will 100-plus reviews describing the FTX series coffeemakers as "Niagara Falls". At that rate, they might as well censor ALL negative reviews.
In my experience, this coffeemaker is a tad slow, but it's mighty attractive sitting on the counter. Unfortunately, not long after purchase, I had a pot take 50 minutes to brew. If it had been on delayed brew in the program (so that my coffee would be ready upon awakening, for example), I can imagine how this elongated brew cycle repeated over the course of several days or weeks could result in the eventual overheating and melting electronics that at least two Amazon.com reviewers noted. In my case, cleaning the unit with vinegar yet again - the fourth such cleaning in less than two weeks time - restored the typical brew speed, yet brew time continues to vacillate between as little as 1 minute per cup to nearly 2 minutes.
If you have a good experience with this coffeemaker, by all means offset these negative reviews and post your praises. But if you are about to post the zillionth review about burning hot coffee spewing out of every orifice in this coffeemaker, please also report your experience to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission so that these coffeemakers, if necessary, can be recalled.

This coffee maker is a piece of junk. I have experienced the same problem as most of the other people who have had problems with this product. It leaks terribly and makes a huge mess and I too have sent Mr. Coffee emails, with no response. They do not have to worry about me buying another Mr. Coffee product, because that will never happen!

Leaks, leaks ,leaks everywhere. Filter hard to access and hard to seat. I paid a lot of money for the worst coffee maker ever designed. My husband made the comment that someone designed it who had never gone to an engineering class.
How would you like to have hot coffee rolling off your counter top onto the floor every morning? If this sounds like you, go ahead and buy it.

My 12 year-old son gave this coffeemaker to me last Christmas. He knows how his Mom loves her morning cup-o-coffee and thought it looked cool. Too bad this was a piece of junk from day one. The machine leaked from day one. Not a little leak -- but dripping off your countertop, puddling on the floor leaks. And it wasn't hot coffee or water. It was cold coffee. Couldn't figure out how that happened and no response from anyone at the Mr. Coffee either e-mail or phone. Did find many others out there who had the same problem with a few of their models. Even found an article about possible lawsuits. Well, after no response from Mr. Coffee, the final blow came about the end of May. After setting the coffee pot on and putting it near the sink so the overflow could just drain away, I came back to the kitchen to the smell of burning wires. That did it! Turned it off, emptied it out and took it to the big trash can outside.
The biggest rip-off was the disappointment my son felt that his Christmas gift was worthless...a lesson in consumerism 101.
I have had Mr. Coffee's for years and thank goodness I still had my old, old Mr. Coffee. It still works like a charm. DON'T BUY THIS MACHINE... BUY THE BASIC AND GET A THERMAL CARAFE. IT'S SAFER.

I make a daily pot of coffee of at least 6 cups. It works great, and has a lot of functionality to get your brew just right. And its looks are a mix of classy and modern.
The water filter works fairly well for me and it really does seem to make the coffee taste better. Obviously it will work better in some cities than others. If you don't like it or don't want to spend the $3 to replace the filter that can be found at any department store, you can simply remove it and the coffee maker will still operate normally.
Unlike some other reviewers, I have yet to have a problem with coffee flooding my kitchen. As with any coffee pot you just need to make sure everything is properly seated before you turn it on and walk away.
After reading the reviews below regarding the flooding; I took it upon myself to shoot an email to Mr. Coffee's customer service department via their website. I received a reply within 24 hours stating that it could be a result of either a dirty water filter (just a few bucks at any department store), a dirty or clogged coffee filter or basket, or not using the coffee maker properly. The email also stated that if the unit is defective then they will replace it if it is less than a year old (keep your Amazon invoice as a receipt).
I like it a lot and I am very satisfied with it. I'll recommend it to anybody who likes to fine tune their brew.

Normally I would never purchase anything by Mr. Coffee. However, when I was at Target, I noticed a coffee maker unlike anything I had seen before and it was on sale! It had been marked down to $29.95 I believe. From first seeing this perculator sitting on the shelf, I knew I had to have it. However, I wouldn't have paid a dime more for it.
The automatic timer works great, the variable carafe heater works well, the brew time indicator is a wonderful tool in judging the freshness of my cup of joe. The machine is easy to clean. Although, I'm not a Clorox freak, so I don't turn the thing upside down each night to make sure there isn't a drop of water remaining in it.
If you find this coffee maker on a considerable sale, I would reccomend you purchase it. I haven't owned it long enough to experience any of the problems that all of the other raters have encountered. But, maybe mine was a lemon and won't have any of the problems everyone else has...All in all, not a bad maker and defnitely a frugal subsitute for Cuisanart's DCC-1200 which retails at $150.00. All the same features...but hardly the same name. I give it a 3 out of 5.

We've had this machine for a couple of weeks. We got ours at Costco for $35. We haven't had any leaking problems yet. We like the delayed brew feature and auto shutoff. The carafe is easy to pour and doesn't drip like others we've had. For the price we paid, it's a good deal. We don't care about the water filter screen that goes on top of the grounds cup. I did notice that Longs has replacemnt screens that the paper filters sit in.

I usually always read buyer reviews before purchasing a new product, but this time I didn't - shame on me! You fellow coffee lovers out there can relate to the fact that going one or two days without a beloved pot of coffee will just about drive you insane! So, the same with me. I ended up making a spur of the moment decision at Costco when my Krups Pro Aroma Time bit the dust because this Mr. Coffee machine had the same types of features as my Pro Aroma, but was more cost effective. It does look really neat and all, but don't let that fool you! Where shall I begin? Let's start with the carafe. First of all, when I washed it the first time I wanted to use it, I noticed that on the inside of the plastic on top and at the end of the handle, there are really pointy sharp corners. I scratched my hand on the sharp edges. The opening on top of the carafe is too small too, and the whole rim is plastic. Second, I got a steam burn on my thumb when I poured my coffee because I have this habit of grabbing the handle and placing my thumb on the top part of the handle where the lid connects to the carafe. There is a hole where the two meet which allowed for steam to escape and get my thumb. Lastly, when pouring that last cup of coffee, the lid falls open into the coffee cup. Bad carafe! Bad, bad carafe! Now, on to the way you have to put the grounds in. You have to open the entire top of the coffee maker to get the basket out and empty the grounds, and put more into the filter. This can be somewhat difficult, because to do this, I have to pull the maker out from under my cabinet, turn it towards the right, open the top, fill the filter, close the top, turn the maker all the way around to open the lid to pour the water into the water basin, close that lid, and scoot the maker back under the cabinet. Sheesh! Way too troublesome! AND - to top that off, when the coffee brews, condensation forms on the underside of the lid, so when I open it in the evening to get the coffee ready, the water from the condensation drips and runs all the way down the sides of the maker and onto the countertop! I've tried opening it at many different speeds too. I've found that opening it faster only causes the water to run down the back of the machine. Another thing is that it really doesn't make that great of coffee. Needless to say, I'm planning on returning this coffee maker to Costco, telling them how lousy a product it is, and I'm promptly going to buy another coffee maker. Whatever that one ends up being, I don't know. I'll have to check out the reviews!

Update: I wrote to Mr. Coffe regarding the problem with the leaking coffeemaker. I received a prompt reply indicating that I would be sent a replacement part. I actually just received a whole new unit. I will now give this new replacement unit a try and hope that the design has been modified to elimate the leaking.
Previous: After one month of use, this attractive coffee maker begins to leak all over the counter. I make 6 cups of coffee each morning so it should not an issue of overflowing because of too much water in the resevoir. The counter floods with brewed coffee randomly 5 out of 7 times...what a mess. I am hoping to return the unit and get my money back. I would not recommend until this defect is fixed.

This coffee pot is the bane of my existence. It worked fine for a month or two, then it would leak coffee all over the counter if I didn't stand there and reseat the filter as it started to brew. So no more using the timer. Very upsetting to find a mess first thing in the morning. Then last week it just started pouring coffee everywhere no matter how carefully you put everything in place. The machine is less than 6 months old.
On the upside, it makes a good cup of coffee on the strong brew setting, if you don't mind licking it off the counter!

This machine makes good coffee, I'm no expert, but I grind my own and care more than a little bit about the quality of the coffee I drink. This machine replaced a Krups coffee/espresso combo - I think the coffee is equal or better than the Krups. What I love: super hot coffee, programability, filter, and quality; What I don't love: difficult to clean carafe if you have big hands like me; the coffee basket isn't as a good of a fit as you'd expect - like others said, make sure you have it positioned snugly; and, a tad slow. I haven't had any leak issues but I agree that you need to make sure the basket, filter, and carafe are all "engaged" or you could have a leak. Maybe this won't hold up to long term use but for now, 3 months old, it's pretty good.

If you like a quick cup of weak coffee, you will like this. We like to take the time to make a rich, strong coffee. This has a switch for making stronger coffee, but unlike our previous maker, it makes a harsh flavor rather than a strong flavor. We have tried various measures of coffee, but to no effect. We are looking for another coffee maker.

This well made coffee maker has a very poor design despite its slick look and its high end features.
I think a redesigned carafe lid would solve the leak problem. As it is, if the carafe isn't in exactly the right spot, with the handle pointing the right way, its going to overflow. Knowing this, I still get coffee spills (like half a pot) on the counter frequently if I don't watch it brew.
Some reviews say the coffee is weak, but I don't agree. My leaking coffee has eaten the Teflon coating off the burner.

I have had this coffeemaker over a year now, and it still works correctly, reliably brewing our morning carafe with the timer. As someone mentioned, placing the controls over the carafe may not be a good idea, since I have seen steam inside the LCD clock, but performance has not been affected. There have even been accidents (like someone forgetting to put the carafe on the base correctly, and someone forgetting to empty the carafe before a new brew cycle) which have gotten the base very wet, and it still works, which amazes me. Let me list the good points and the bad points (which I think should be addressed by Sunbeam/Mr Coffee):
GOOD POINTS
1. customer service - my original carafe dripped when pouring, I emailed customer service and they sent me a new one, FREE.
2. style - this coffeemaker with it's clock face just plain looks sharp.
3. clean cycle - slowly drips cleaning solution to maximize dissolving of minerals
4. hot plate temp control - I like this option
5. water level indicators in front - I can see the water level from the front - my old maker I had to peer around the side!
6. reliability - I have never had a problem with this coffeemaker's basic function of timed-brewing of coffee
BAD POINTS
1. the beeps - why have it beep when the programmed cycle is done? I want the smell of coffee or my alarm to wake me, not FIVE long loud beeps. I wish there was a mute button for the beeps.
2. the lid style - you have to lift the whole lid to access the basket, and if the coffeemaker is sitting under some cabinets it can be inconvenient
3. "brushed steel" accents aren't what they seem - the steam from the carafe has cause the chrome to separate and peel from the overhang. Why not just use brushed aluminum? The metal already underneath the chrome would have been fine.
4. easily removed lettering - quite by accident I discovered that 409 will dissolve the numbers on the carafe and water level indicator, so I have to be careful not to spray near the uncovered coffeemaker. Luckily I only lost "2" and "4". :)
5. The price - It is a bit expensive, I shopped around and found it for a reasonable price.
I don't have an opinion on the "brew strength" setting, I never did try to compare them, using only "regular". I will say that my coffee never seems "weak" and I don't use the water filter anymore, it isn't necessary. I have chlorinated water, but I think a lot evaporates overnight - my coffee tastes great every morning. I remove hard water minerals from my machine bi-monthly to keep it brewing reasonably quickly, and the taste consistent.
In conclusion, I am fond of this coffeemaker, and had to pipe up when I read so many negative reviews. They aren't all bad machines out there! (Watch me wake up to my kitchen being on fire tomorrow morning *laugh*) I am hoping that when mine finally dies a next generation will be out there with some of my issues resolved.

The main issue for me is the charcoal water filters. They are designed to last only a month, and replacements are hard to find in stores. I found them on-line (only on the Mr Coffee site...why I didn't look there first, I don't know). But the point is the replacement filters are $5.99 each! Expect to add $60/yr to the price of this coffee maker if you want to take advantage of the chlorine filter. The Mr. Coffee site offers a pack of the filters (6 for $14.99--still an extra $30/yr) but they were out of stock forcing you to buy the $5.99 each ones.
Sure, you don't need the filters to use the maker, but when the only reason to buy this maker (for a coffee lover) is the chlorine removal aspect, it REALLY should make you consider another maker.
Besides this issue, it makes good coffee, and I haven't experienced any of the issues that some of the other reviewers have reported. And it does look good. If you're buying for looks, this is a good place to look...If you're buying for coffee, this an EXPENSIVE place to look.

While we haven't encountered the leaking issue (yet), no matter what we do the coffee comes out weak (tasting of brown water). We've tried a number of things (adding more coffee, switiching from a medium to a full roast, grinding our beans differently, using pre-ground beans, etc., the list goes on) to no avail. And yes, we read the manual and have all the parts in place. Despite the attractive looks and moderate price, this model is a huge disappointment and a waste of time, good coffee beans, and cash.
