Very high quality plastic ( just like in the $50 kettle)
Nice look (picture reflects its appearance very well)
High power 1500W makes water boils very quickly.

The only inconviance is the small of plastic during a few first days of usage. I wash the kettle several times with detergent, but the smell didn't vanished. Only after the week of usage the smell starts to deteriorate. Now, it's fine and I'm very happy with this bargen.

Certainly Braun and Philips have great products, but this one is n't worse and is 60% cheaper. Buy IT

If your an expat or just an anglophile and you are left wondering, "Why doesn't America embrace the electric kettle?!" then this is the item for you. Sleek and aptly priced.

I don't know why you'd pay around $50 for something that just heats water... brand loyalty? I wouldn't pay the extra $15-$30 just for the flat metal plate that the Braun or Philips has. (The West Bend kettle has a metal coil to heat up the water: Yes, you have to clean the coiled versions, but it's exactly the same as cleaning out a coffee maker... white vinegar once in a blue moon. Hey, the Brits and the Irish don't mind the coil, why should I?)

The stouter version of this I think is too small, unless you live alone and don't drink that much tea/coffee/cocoa. Between us, my brother and I drink six to eight cups of tea a day, plus hot cereal on top of that and this kettle is more than sufficient (1.7 liters).

Some more good things:
It turns of automatically after it comes to a roaring boil.
See-through panel lets you see the water level.
So quiet, you wouldn't know it's on...
That's why it has a little red light that goes on.
Has a locking top so as to avoid spills.
The black fits in with my kitchen's decor.

It also comes in handy for when I'm cooking, using up all the burners and need just a bit of hot water, quickly. Or even if I am cooking rice or pasta, it's easier to heat up the water in the electric kettle and then pour it into the pot on the stove.

Two complaints: The cord is thick and not very flexible (the cord itself is about two feet). I have this plugged into the same outlet as my microwave and cannot use the two at the same time or else I'll have a circuit short... but then again, whoever remodeled the kitchen did a bad job on the electicity.

Makes a great present for any hot beverage lover or college student.

It's great for boiling several cups of water at once, but for smaller amounts, it's pretty much useless. Also, it does not shut off as advertised when it reaches a rolling boil. It stays on until the water boils completely away -- then it shuts off. Good if you need a quick couple of cups but don't leave it on for too long.

This unit is OK if you want to heat more than two cups of water. It has a minimum water level to cover the coils. If you want to just heat 1/2 cup for oat meal or one cup for a tea, you waste a lot of electricity and water by heating two cups. If you use bottled water like I do, you really don't want to waste half or more of the water you are heating up. Don't leave the water in the kettle either. It will leak. It also does not shut itself off as advertized after the water is heated to boiling. It will keep on boiling until you shut if off or if it goes dry. It is also very cheaply made, but I guess what to you want for $20.

This was a great bargain for its value. The criticisms of others about the need to boil two cups or more of water at a time is valid, but as I'm frequently making tea for myself and my significant other, that doesn't bother me much. Also, not sure, but I think the electricity wasted in boiling an extra cup is probably not much worse than the energy lost in boiling on the stove. But then again, I don't use fancy-pants bottled water either. :-)

My kettle does not leak, and does shut off as advertised a few seconds after boiling.

I did a lot of research about electric kettles before buying this one, and I think it's really a great value. (I saw models that cost $30 more where people complained that the handle would spontaneously break off, scalding the owner!) I think it's very well made for the $20 price tag.

I received this tea kettle in February and it worked great. However, after 3 months of use, the heating element inside the kettle separated from the housing, allowing water to pour out onto the electrical connections. Luckily, this happened when the unit was not plugged in, otherwise the results may have been worse than a useless tea kettle.

It may have been a defective unit, but I would not recommend this unit. West Bend offered to repair it if I sent it back at my expense. Considering the cost to ship it back and the time it takes, I decided against it and will buy a different brand.

This pot was wonderful for three days. boiled the water and shut off. Excellent. I used it a lot. The fourth day; i turned it on and went to brush my teeth while i waited for it.

it didn't shut off.

in that small amount of time it had boiled nearly all 1.75 quarts of water into steam which condensed under, on, inside of and on top of my kitchen cabinet and counter. The steam condensation ruined my cabinet in that short span of time. that $20 pot that i now can't use will end up costing me at least $350 plus labor...

Made a wonderful steam room - so if that's what you're looking for buy it.

If not and you still decide to purchase it - DO NOT TRUST THE AUTO SHUT OFF AND WALK AWAY FROM IT ...

I'll be going back to the microwave which i can trust to shut off) for one cup heating or my whistling pot for two cups plus. (which i know will scream until i shut it off)

The next day, I noticed moisture all over the front of my new custom cabinets and in fact one of the door's laminate finish had curled up. The tea pot NEVER shut itself off which is supposed to be one of its safety features. Not only is it supposed to shut itself off after it reaches a certain temperature, it most certainly should have after its use. I am grateful that our home did not burn down with us in it but would not want this to happen to others'. Ours was promptly thrown away!! There's a reason the price is too good to be true. Also, it was very bulky and the heating elements are on the inside.

But if you want one for that, you should'nt have bought this one. For small quanities buy Bodum's Ibis Mini. Either way, this one is the better deal.
It boils the water in about 2-4 minutes. I think this product is great, I recommend it highly. The only thing I don't like is that it isn't very attractive. Which doesn't really matter too much, b/c it sits in the corner of my counter.

I too, after the second day had problems with the Auto-shutoff feature not working (as mentioned in other reviews). I found out that if the lid is not completly closed, the auto-shutoff feature will not work. When the lid is closed properly (you should hear a click when closing the lid. Also, when the water begins to boil, very minimal steam should be seen) The auto shut-off feature will work everytime. The manual does not reference this, but I noticed other cordless water kettle manufacturers will note this in their manuals.

I would give it 5 stars, but I was hoping it would boil water a little faster, but for the price I paid, it's more then acceptable

I've had this for less than a week and I'm returning it. Too soon to comment on whether the unit will hold up, but it's very flimsy. The base is too light, so when you pick up the kettle the base often comes with it.

Also, the cord uses a 3rd grounding pin-which makes the cord very thick, inflexible, and hard to stick into the channel in the base, to allow the base to lie flat on the counter. My previous kettle, a Krups model that started to leak after 7 years, used a simpler 2-prong plug, which made the cord more flexible.

I picked up a new Braun kettle today to replace this one. You can get it on Amazon for what I paid for it--$43; the extra $20 or so appears to be worth it in terms of sturdiness and quality.

->Shipping West Bend 53783 1-3/4-Quart Cordless Water Kettle, Black

As a Brit in the US having a kettle is a way of life. I use it for boiling water for hot drinks and as a quicker way to heat water for cooking veggies/pasta/rice. I bought this one 3 months ago - my ideal criteria were:

- large capacity
- plastic - we have a 3yr old son, stainless ones get hotter
- black - my husband is a blacksmith and however hard he scrubs his hands they are still grimy at times
- circular mounting base - my husband is left-handed
- reasonably priced

We were replacing a Bodum Curl. It took a lot of looking to decide on this one. The overall availability of cordless electric kettles when I was looking before Christmas 2005 was hopeless, nothing was in stock so I figure if this one doesn't last a huge amount of time its been a cheap fill-in. It was less expensive than I was prepared to pay so I was concerned about the quality. It does have a bit of a cheapie feel to it but actually for the money its ok.

Things I don't like are: it does not have the circular base allowing you to replace it in any direction and its a bit clunky looking. However, its efficient and has plenty of capacity.

Unlike other reviewers the auto shut-off does work on mine, I found the 40" cord length ok and as for wasting water because of the 2 cup minimum - mine doesn't leak so if you leave that extra amount in the kettle then you only have to waste it once, less a bit of steam.
---------------------
Update March 25 2007: so we are still using this kettle BUT there is a wire that gets hot in the plastic base underneath where the kettle sits. It has melted the plastic around it and made a funny smell, I keep expecting the kettle to die or short out but it has not. The smell has gone away now. But I'm on the look out for a different one now would now give it 2 stars cos this is an definited design issue

We got this electric water pot as a gift off of our wedding registry. It's a great pot because it boils quickly and is not too loud. However, the only downfall is that the strainer at the spout that catches the little particles is not secure. It sits on a ledge, able to be removed for washing or what I'm not sure because all that is used in the pot is water. I'm not sure when it happened, but that little piece dropped down into the pot unnoticed. It melted onto the coils of the pot making the pot unuseable. So, if you are considering buying this pot, consider getting one that has a secure strainer or if purchased, always check to see if the strainer is where it is supposed to be before using.

We loved the sleek look of this kettle, but ended up disappointed.

We had the kettle for 10 days, and after 5 days, it stopped turning off automatically. It also had a very strong plastic smell, which flavored the water. We tried many things to get rid of the smell, but it still has a slight after-taste and smell. Sadly, it has not performed as expected and we will be returning it and ordering another brand.

Given the price this Kettle works ok, but:
- it fails to shut off quite frequently, when boiling point is reached (which is why I ditched my old el. kettle)
- it doesn't shut off, when you take it off the base (so you put it back empty and it's trying to boil the little water left inside)
- you have to fit it onto the base (better models can be put on 360 degrees).

If you wanna use this a lot, get a better one.

Update: Yesterday I started boiling a quart of water and went to do something else in the mean time. Of course I forgot about my water. When I returned to the kitchen, the kettle had shut off - but only after a full quart of water had evaporated :(

On the plus side, the kettle boils water quickly, it's inexpensive, and the overall design is clever. Unfortunately, a couple of problems with this item may force me to abandon it.
I've been using the kettle for about a month and the water still has some kind of plastic chemical taste to it. I can taste it through the tea. I've tried detergent, bleach, and have boiled around a gallon of water a day with it. I've tried to ignore the taste, and convince myself that the chemicals are harmless but harmful or not it makes the tea taste bad.
The filter keeps falling off and it was detached when it arrived. My instruction book doesn't say much about the filter, but without the filter it won't automatically shut off.
It was only around 20 bucks but I've wasted quite a bit of time with this item, cleaning it and fussing with the filter, and I feel bad about ingesting the chemicals.
I want an energy efficent, quick way to make tea, so I will continue trying to clean the darn thing, and if I find something that intervenes with this chemical leaching process I'll update this review. Until then I must return to the primitive task of boiling the water in a microwave oven.

It works very quickly and it looks very nice in our largely black-and-chrome appliance kitchen. The price was better than almost everything else I looked at. The only possible negative, as noted by some other reviewers, is that you do have to put a lot of water in there to get above the 'min' line. I have boiled mine out a couple of times with vinegar, which helps, but that blasted taste of plastic keeps comming back (and its' nasty). It makes the tea taste like something drained from an industrial waste site.
Besides some problems with the electrical connection with the base, this kettle does boil water like crazy. This would be OK for some industrial reason; like you want some hot water to clean engine parts. If you want hot water for consumtion; DO NOT BUY A PLASIC KETTLE. Also, I would be VERY concerened about the health effects of these nasty chemicals.

1. I use lots of hot water for hot drinks. This heats up fairly quickly and shuts itself off. It's much nicer than heating up the stove every time.
2. It has a good "footprint". You can push it back to the wall and it doesn't stick out very far. It looks neat on the counter.
3. It has a separate base with an ample length cord so you can pull it out on the counter when you are using it.
The only negative is that it's rather heavy when it's filled with water.

It's an excellent value for the price. I have seen similar models priced at $45-$60.

->Best Price West Bend 53783 1-3/4-Quart Cordless Water Kettle, Black

In overall, the kettle looks very cheap made, can't see water level and device arrived deffective - the kettle doesn't shut off itself, almost burnt itself... sent it back... bottomline: doesn't worth the money paid

-> West Bend 53783 1-3/4-Quart Cordless Water Kettle, Black

I wasn't expecting or looking for a lot when I ordered this "water kettle" I just wanted something to heat water in for tea that didn't require heating up my house in the summertime through the use of my range top (I live in a very hot area & every degree counts). I thought "cordless" sounded great, so I went ahead and ordered it.
Why it is fantastic:
1) Cordless is awesome. There is no dangling cord to damage, drag over to your tea/coffee cup, or get caught on something!
2) The appearance is even better than it looks in the picture!
3) It heats really, REALLY FAST!!! So much so that I now use it any and every time I need boiling water. It is faster than a microwave!!
4) It turns itself off if left untouched for awhile. No more worrying about whether or not you forgot to turn the electrical appliance off!
5) It is a great value. Many kettles have fewer or none of the pluses of this one and cost more than it does!
Negatives:
1) It really isn't a problem with the kettle but rather with me. You need to have the switch on the kettle turned to the off position before you put it on the base. Inevitably, I forget! The water will not boil or even heat up this way! HOWEVER, after using it a few times and learning how fast it heats up, you realize you should be "hearing" something from it and so you flip the switch. Presto, your water is ready!
I would heartily recommend this product to anyone who wants boiling water in a hurry, likes convenience and efficiency and enjoys value for their money!!!

->Buy West Bend 53783 1-3/4-Quart Cordless Water Kettle, Black

The kettle which was puchased from you did not come up to the expectation that is normally found with West Bend Products. When the water in the kettle was boiled,it tasted of the plastic which the kettle was made of.One can only assume that the plastic issue needs to be addressed. That is my comment on this product

Without regard to the Amazon process (highly efficient as it were) this product is exactly what I was looking for in an electric kettle. Easy fill, easy on, easy off, easy pour, and it looks ok on my counter. There is only one button which makes this kettle super easy. A retractable cord would be nice, but oh well.

Review: Saves time with no mess.

->Comparison West Bend 53783 1-3/4-Quart Cordless Water Kettle, Black

I'm glad I bought this item. It boils water quite fast. No more mess in the microwave with over flow form boiled water in a cup. Makes just under 2 quarts. Plenty of water for several cups tea or a Cup-o-Noodles or Jello even. It is simple in design not European. Very American. It was my first time buying a electric kettle and, I didn't want to spend 40-100+ dollars. I and everyone in our house and friends think it's pretty cool.
