I gave this product 3 stars because it makes good coffee, as all the Krups coffeemakers I've owned have, BUT the water gauge on the side broke the second time I used the machine. Could not be bothered to return it, but I do find it annoying. Even more annoying is the fact that it seemed reconditioned, and not NEW, as I had ordered.

I am a loyal Krups customer, so when my pro aroma became a pain, I bought this unit. The first problem I encountered was bubbles in the water level indicator. I was able to solve this my filling the machine all the way up and running the water through, but eventually I gave up. I now have to fill my carafe with the amount of water I want and then into the machine. I too, found the carafe to be thin, but am okay with it now. The carafe does spill when pouring and I also found a problem with steam coming out of the carafe cover near the handle, so be careful how you hold the carafe. Just a year out of warranty the LCD display has decided to puke out. The programming instructions don't stay in my brain like the old pro aroma, and I have to get the book out every time the power goes out. The unit makes good coffee, but I have found I have to use A LOT more coffee to get the same taste as my pro aroma. The filter basket does not stand up for easy filling. Overall, I think Krups really missed the mark with this one.

I recently bought this machine. It makes very good coffee, nice and hot with good flavor, and the programming works very well. At the $49.95 price with free shipping here at Amazon, this is an excellent coffeemaker. I have had some cases of the bubbles in the sight level tube that others have noted, but I find that if I pour the water into the reservoir gently, this never happens. I have also noticed that the carafe dribbles if I try to pour too fast. Again, I have just learned to take it a bit slower and it never happens. So perfect it is not, but very good it is. I'd give the machine itself 4 out of 5 stars, although again at this price point it might still earn a 5 in spite of the two minor flaws I have noticed. But...

...it definitely gets the 5th star for Krups' excellent customer service. My machine arrived with a small problem in the swing-out door that hold the filter. It hinges on a wire spring, and at the top where the door snaps onto the spring, the hole in the door was wallowed out so that it fit loosely on the spring. It still worked, but flopped around some and didn't pop open on its own when I pulled the release lever. I strongly suspect this was a return from a customer who mishandled the door (maybe he/she just tried to pull the door open without using the latch lever). I don't think it was a defect. Anyway, I called Krups to ask about a replacement part because I wanted to keep using the machine instead of sending it in. The rep who talked to me could not have been nicer or more accomodating. She determined the part I needed and sent it to me free of charge immediately, without my having to really even ask. All they requested was a copy of my sales confirmation email to document that I was within the warranty period. The new door is on, and the coffeemaker and I are both very happy campers now. I wish all companies took care of customers like Krups took care of me!

...BUT I'm not sure I'm going to be happy with this Krup's product.
It arrived this morning and I followed the set up and getting started instructions to the letter.
I rinsed that little internal filter thingy, put it in place, and then
ran 3 full pots of plain water through the machine before brewing my
first pot of coffee; it still tasted very plastic-y to me.

My brother and sister-in-law have this Krups' coffee maker for a few years now-
and they don't remember having this problem in the beginning.

But I will say; this Krups pot brews the HOTTEST coffee I have ever
had in my life. I always noticed that at my brother's house, and
now in my own.
It's nuclear-power-plant HOT! Which is why it tastes like plastic??

Anyhow, setting the clock, timer and other functions was not
difficult at all. Carefully reading the instructions -first- makes
it a snap.
Tomorrow morning I will try using bottled spring water for
another pot of coffee and see if that makes a difference.
I don't know why it would- since my crappy ol' Mr Coffee coffeemaker
made coffee well enough with or without the spring water.
:: shrugs ::

I'll give it a week and then update this review if necessary...

UPDATE: It's been several days and I have to say I'm fairly satisfied with the coffee maker over all.
It took running a full pot of 50% lemon juice concentrate & 50% water through the machine -twice-
to finally get rid of that horrible plastic taste. (I didn't have any white vinegar in the house at the time).
That was the last resort, if it didn't work I was sending the coffee maker back.
I had already run 5 or 6 full pots of water through the machine
before using the lemon juice concentrate.

The pot does leak when you pour it; unless you lift the lid a quarter inch or so while pouring.
I guess I can deal with that.
The only other thing I found somewhat sub-standard, was the flip-up
door covering the water chamber.
It's very flimsy- and after only a few uses, it's become warped and
the ends stick up and don't sit right anymore when closed.
Makes the pot look "cheap" and poorly made. Well, I guess it is....

I bought this coffee maker four months ago. At first I was not pleased with it. I loved my old Krups coffee maker - great cup of coffee. This new one tasted like plastic. So I added a cup of vinegar to a 11 cups of water. Ran it through until the mix was in the system and let it stand for an hour. Then I ran the rest through. Ran two additional pots of plain water through and now this coffee maker makes as good a cup of coffee as my old Krups. Hope this helps anyone who is not satisfied with this maker.

->Best Price Krups 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemakers with Glass Carafes

I purchased this machine because of Krups good reputation.
The unit makes a fast, nice, hot cup of coffee...but so does a $19.99 Black and Decker! The outside water level indicator is VERY inaccurate; filling the reservoir to the "4" cup mark yield a bit over 3 cups of coffee!?!?!? In addition, the indicator gets air bubbles in it (probably from the inside water filter) making it completely useless. The carafe is THIN and the fact the the handle is glued on frankly scares me (see prior reviewer whose handle FELL off of a FULL pot of coffee). The unit in general does not give the feel of a very well made machine.
After one week...back it goes. Look at the Cuisinart DCC-1200. Well made, good carafe with plastic lip. WORTH the 80 bucks

->Comparison Krups 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemakers with Glass Carafes

I ordered this coffee maker about a month ago, after the Krups I had for about 12 years started to go. I decided to buy Krups again because I really liked my old machine. This is a step up from my old model, with programable brewing and the "auto off" option. So far I have really liked this machine, but a few things I think could be improved upon. Like others, I think the LCD backlight could be changed to something you can read better from a distance. You almost have to be standing right in front of it to read it or see it at all. You can turn off the "finished" beep which is good because it is an extremely annoying sound. The carafe seems thin, but so far hasn't been a problem and it doesn't drip when I pour. But what I really dont' like is that the lid does not come off easily which makes cleaning the carafe and filling it more difficult. It looks like the latch might break with too much removal. My old one just snapped off easily which was great, but it dripped when I poured. Others said they thought it was too noisy, but it makes no more noise than any other machine I have owned. One thing to note, because I didn't understand this when I ordered it, is it has a filter inside the water resevoir that you have to replace every couple months (It comes with one to start you off). No biggie, but not clear to me in the description, so you might order extra water filters when you order the machine. Overall, I am loyal to Krups, but I am glad I didn't pay the original $100 for it. Great for the sale price, and I will continue to buy Krups because I think they make the best coffee, seem to last forever, and the machines look nice on the counter too.

I've been using this coffee machine for about 3 months now and really enjoy the coffee it produces. The automatic feature works well and it is a huge improvement over my previous maker (not a Krups!) However, at times it makes rather alarming noises, i.e., gurgling and bubbling, which always interrupt my morning read! I've also had problems with setting the clock after we lost power for a while. I bought this coffeemaker after experiencing the coffee produced by a Krupps maker at work. These units are reputed to do a much better job of heating the water to the correct temperature for the brewing process to release all the flavorin the coffee grounds. I have to admit that this unit really does the job well. It's 1100 watts of power makes a great cup. Frankly the interface for the alarm sound and for setting the clock and timer, etc. is a bit wonky, but no worse than the thousands of other devices like it on the market. A big plus is the built in water filter. Clean water makes all the difference in the world for a great cup of coffee. Beyond the performance, the unit itself is sturdy and well made, and is a nice clean design. I would definitely recommend this unit to anyone.

->Buy Krups 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemakers with Glass Carafes

I don't normally write reviews, but this time I felt I needed to. I received this Coffeemaker & enjoyed GREAT coffee for almost 2 weeks (that's why I give it even 1 star)! My sister came for a visit. On her first morning here, She picked up the Glass Carafe, (which was full of just brewed, VERY HOT, coffee), to pour herself a cup of coffee & the handle/lid assembly fell completely off.The Glass Carafe fell to the countertop, splashing hot coffee on my sisters hands. Luckily, she had only minor burns. If the Carafe had fallen to the floor, I'm sure it would have splashed quite a bit more & could have been much more serious. I feel very fortunate that my grandchildren & my dogs were not around when it happened as well. I tried to contact the Krups customer service (through their website) and they never responded. So much for buying a "big name" product for assurance of quality & customer service. If you examine the way this Carafe handle/lid assembly is put together, you'll see that it is actually GLUED on with two big glue dots where the handle meets the Carafe. After this happened, I went out in search for a new Coffemaker & found that there are other companies that make their Carafe's this way as well. I'm sure that the "glue" is SUPPOSED to hold in place indefinetly, but obviously, there can be exceptions. And, it could end up causing an entire pot of extremely hot coffee to pour (or splash) onto someone. My sister's burns didn't require a hospital visit, thank goodness, but we were lucky. Krups apparently doesn't care much about customer satisfaction, I'm very disappointed about that. I hope they will at least look into the safety factor, but since they didn't respond to me at all, I just don't know about that either. If I had this Coffeemaker for a year, instead of 2 weeks, I would have expected more than this! There was no abuse of the product, (I even hand washed it, I don't have a dishwasher!), just faulty construction! PLEASE, BE SAFE & look at the assembly of the Carafe before you purchase your next Coffeemaker! The Coffeemaker I bought to replace this one is doing great, makes great coffee, (it has the dual filter system as this one does), and is made much better (not "glued" together), and it is NOT a Krups!!!!

by: Velouria on date: January 5, 2007

->Deals Krups 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemakers with Glass Carafes

I had a Krups purchased in 1999 that lasted 7 years - it was the best coffee maker I have ever owned. After it died, I noticed that Krups was not making the same model so I bought a Braun KF510 (which I love and highly recommend).

I bought this Krups as a Christmas gift for my parents, and I was disappointed in the quality. The pot itself feels extremely thin (much thinner than my $35 Braun machine). It did not come with a gold mesh filter (or any filter)and the filter basket does not really fit properly with the machine, so it snags every time you close it.

Another problem is that you cannot turn the pot back on once it turns off: the machine tries to brew all over again, and then turns off after indicating there is no water. So, you must program the coffee pot to stay on longer, and if you want to keep it warm after it turns off, you cannot. I have never seen a coffee pot do this.

Overall, my Braun KF510 machine is sturdier and more well-made than this one. The Krups does make a good-tasting cup of coffee, and my parents seem happy with it. I think a better machine could be purchased for less money. I do not think it is worth the price.

Note: In all of my research while looking for decent coffee makers, Braun and Krups are the best on the market.

I received the FME2 as a gift Christmas 2005 and have had nothing but problems. The water reservoir gets air pockets in it when water is poured into the tank, the coffee tastes burned after sitting in the carafe for a half hour, when pouring a cup of coffee the carafe leaks all over the counter and lastly the filter basket just broke. Fortunately I saved my old Krups which is now brewing my morning coffee. It isn't pretty to look at but it makes wonderful coffee without any problems.

by: Strebel on date: November 26, 2006

->Sale Krups 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemakers with Glass Carafes

This coffeemaker has to be carcinogenic. It adds a strong taste of plastic to the coffee. Most coffeemakers have plastic parts but they do not add a direct plastic taste to the coffee. Also, as the coffee brews, a distinct plastic aroma wafts from the coffeemaker into the room.
I am amazed that Krups, a reputable firm, would not realize while evaluating this product, that the plastic was directly leaching into the liquid in the coffeemaker. It is not good if they poison their clientele.
Do NOT buy this unless you like your coffee flavored with plastic resins.

->Compare Krups 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemakers with Glass Carafes

When my old roommate moved out with the fancy coffeemaker, I began searching for a replacement. Timer functions, 8+ cup capacity, and ease of use were indispensable features, but I just couldn't afford a $100 machine. After a few weeks of comparison-shopping, I managed to find this model - the only reputable one under $60.

Usage:
I have owned this for 1 year, and I use the machine every day, setting the timer function to brew a 2-cup pot every morning (for which the "1-3 cup" button is helpful). Occasionally I have brewed a full pot for company, and that's worked fine.

The Good:
- Brews well! The coffee may not be scaldingly hot, but it brews hot enough to retain heat in a mug while drinking, and if left in the pot on the hot plate it's still the perfect drinking temperature 2 hrs later. Also, no strange flavors are imparted on the coffee.
- Brews FAST! Seriously, the coffee is ready ten minutes before the toast unless I time things perfectly.
- Very easy to clean and maintain the filter.
- Very easy to settle pot onto hot plate, ensuring the coffee drips directly into carafe (unlike the comparable Cuisinart I tried, which resulted in dribbling coffee unless placed perfectly).

The Bad:
- The carafe IS thin. I was initially very concerned about breaking it, but I have accidentally banged it several times in the sink and no chips yet...
- The swing-out basket is a little cheap (well, compared to the $150+ mahcines). Sometimes if it's not placed perfectly, I have to push it in with a clunking of plastic that doesn't sound too elegant. But, it functions perfectly, so I don't mind taking the time to set the basket in properly.
- Higher-level programming is not intuitive. You really do need to read the manual for programming the timer, etc, although it's not complicated, and you'll remember it after 1 or 2 times.
- The steam vent is quite strong, and if tucked away under a cabinet can warp the finish on the underside.

Common Complaints Addressed:
- "The water level indicator on the front traps air and is inaccurate." Unfortunately, this is true. However, the gradations on the side of the carafe give me a fairly decent idea of how much water I'm adding, so I don't feel the need to refer to an additional indicator.
- "The machine will turn on automatically if the timer function is set." Well, yes it does. That's why I just turn off the timer when I'm going out of town or don't want coffee - I drink it often enough that not having to set it every time is actually helpful. Some reviews have expressed concern of this being a fire hazard, but when there is no water the machine will not brew and instead display an error message, so I don't think this is a danger.
- "The machine/no-drip lid dribbles coffee while percolating/pouring." Huh... this has also never happened to me, not even when I brewed the full pot. Occasionally the "pause" mechanism doesn't engage quickly when the pot is removed, and some coffee dribbles down, but this cleans up very easily afterwards. I have never had the lid leak while pouring a cup, or while the coffee was just sitting and percolating.

Summary:
For ~$60, I am very pleased with the performance of this model. It probably wouldn't end up on a wedding registry, but for the basic needs of a daily coffee drinker, this is a great bargain. In fact, the only drawback I have encountered from using this coffeemaker is that I find myself drinking far too much coffee because it's a breeze to make!

Not the easiest to use features but it makes great coffee. I actually miss the old Krups that had a little less automation but gave one more control. The old glass water level indicator has been replaced by a cheap plastic tube. It kept giving a false reading because of an air bubble inside and then broke off up at the top of the maker. No more air bubble but we have to keep it secured to the maker with Scotch tape. They just don't make things like they used to but the prices keep going up, don't they? Too bad because I think Krups is still nicer than some of the alternatives.

I have had several different coffeemakers over the years, pretty much get a new one every two years. I had the Braun programmable model and was very pleased with it. It was worn looking so we joined the Gevalia coffee club and got their "free" one. I was disappointed in its lack of programmable options and when the LCD started going decided to give this Krups a try as it was a couple of dollars cheaper than the new Braun one. Overall it makes a great cup of coffee. Here is my experience so far: while the water fill tube is easy to read, it gets bubbles in it so it does not show accurately. When lit, the LCD is very easy to read. However the LCD does not have much contrast when unlit so is hard to read most of the time. The filter basket is easy to operate - a lever spring-releases it (this seems to be the current trend in all programmable coffeemakers). It is fairly easy to program but don't lose the directions, you will need them if you have to do this again. The automatic on feature is different than any other I have used. It is automatically on all the time. When you prepare your coffee for auto brew, just prepare it. It will come on automatically at the appointed time. If you have not prepared, the coffeemaker will start up, but it will sense that there is no water in the chamber and will power down with an error in the LCD. I am not sure if I like this or not. I think I would rather have to push a button to set the auto-brew. The pot lid is not as easy to remove as others. With others, I have had only to continue lifting the lid gently and the lid has detached. With the Krups I had to twist the lid slightly with more force than I am comfortable imparting to get the lid to release. It was easy to replace the lid - however I am very mechanically inclined. The coffeemakers overall look is somewhat boxy. While I am not disappointed with the form and function of this unit, I will probably not get another Krups. I think the Braun is a better designed and functioning unit. Finally - I did give this 5 stars, which shows that I think overall it is a very good, top of heap, coffeemaker.

->Discount Krups 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemakers with Glass Carafes

I have owned a number of good coffee makers and have always considered the Krups badge to be fairly reliable in making good coffee. When my last coffee maker died (we had a wonderful Braun unit for years and it is not made any more, sadly), I went on a quest to find something new. My requirements are, I think, rather simple. First, it must make good coffee. Second, I prefer a 12-cup carafe for those times when company is over. That's really only 6 cups when you use an American size mug. Third, we wanted programming features. And finally, I prefer a water reservoir that is easy to fill with an indicator on the front of the unit to know how much water has been added.

After reading the reviews here, I thought that this model would serve my needs. To my great regret, I disregarded the comments by Jeff and Joker212 about the bubble in the water measure tube and the dribbling pot. I thought these were silly problems that should not be too difficult to overcome.

I was wrong. First the sight tube. I am usually making coffee in the early morning hours when it's rather dark in my kitchen. At this hour, it is very hard to see the markings on the carafe, but worse, when I pour in what I think is enough water, the glass tube almost always has a bubble that makes it impossible to know for sure how much water I have poured.

Much worse -- when you fill your cup, coffee spills all over the counter unless you are extremely slow and careful when you pour. The "no drip spout" description is very false advertising. My wife and I are constantly cleaning coffee off the counter and the floor when we pour a cup. What's worse, you would think that by lifting the cover when you pour (using your thumb to push the tab at the back of the cover) would solve the problem. It does, but then you burn your thumb. I'm really not kidding. The cover is designed so that steam vents out from under that tab. This is a serious design flaw and very unsafe.

After struggling for a couple of weeks with this unit, I'm bringing it back. Thank goodness I decided not to throw out the packaging.

Let me start by saying two things:

1. I love coffee. Personally, not counting my wonderful wife and staff at the office, I drink at least two _pots_ of coffee per day. Yes, that is over 120 fluid ounces every day, seven days a week. Needless to say I was pleased with each of the new health benefits announced regarding excess coffee consumption!

2. After researching reasonably priced, reliable coffee makers, we bought two of these Krups FME2-14 units: One to replace our aging Braun, and the other for our daughters' apartment. This review encompasses experiences from both households.

There are many things to love about this coffeemaker, and a few (3) minor issues. I'll touch on the issues first: With typical German precision, the water reservoir is designed to hold 60 fluid ounces, or 12 5-ounce cups worth. Not more, but I'm sure it can handle less, being well equipped with a 1-3 cup "small pot" mode. However, if (1) you launch into cleaning it and brewing coffee without really reading the user manual, and (2) you have the tendency to brew the fullest possible pot (as a conspicuous consumer such as myself might), you will quickly discover that the overflow port in the back wall of the water reservoir works exceedingly well. I did. As I wiped up the extra few cups of water rapidly dispensed upon my counter I made the mental note to only fill it with 12 cups henceforth. This is, obviously, a user issue; others who are experienced with pots brewing less than advertised will be pleased to note that 12 cups of water in really translates to 12 cups of coffee out. You do not need to overfill this coffeemaker's reservoir, but you may have to relearn some behaviors.

The glass carafe, while well made and shaped in handling terms, is thinner walled than previous pots we've owned. This has two effects: First, the coffee cools faster when the hot plate turns off. Not that my coffee sits around too long, but if this is a potential issue for you I would buy the insulated carafe model. Second, it does not withstand much rough handling, as indicated by our need to purchase a replacement already for the daughters. One "light bump" in the sink was sufficient. It did make me wonder if the same engineer who designed windshields for the 60s VW Beetle was involved... regardless, don't whack it or you'll be picking up the pieces as well as the tab. My wife also adds that the replacement carafe, at over $20, was more costly than expected. Again: Exercise care in handling!

The final issue I have is the engineer's choice of material for making the feet: Two round plastic knobs (in front) and two square rubberized feet (in back) give the coffeemaker a firm grip on your countertop. Unfortunately too firm if you keep the unit under a close overhang as we do. It does mean you have to lift the unit slightly when moving it in or out, something that's easier to do when empty than full due to the overflow port mentioned earlier. Again, this is easily fixed with something slippery (like a silicone glide pad) that the machine can rest upon.

And as you can tell, none of these issues are true defects. In every other regard the Krups FME2-14 has been the best under $100.00 coffeemaker I have ever owned. The controls are logical and easy to operate, and it makes great brew. Unlike many inexpensive units, the steam does not readily escape from vents or cracks in the heating chamber or drip basket, so you can place it in a more confined space than others (bearing in mind the rubber feet) and it blends well in a modern kitchen. Most importantly, the product itself - the coffee - is consistent time after time. Whatever your personal formula for the perfect cuppa you'll get it here!

First and foremost this product makes excellent coffee.
But (there's always a but isn't there) the water feed usually creates bubbles in the watermeasure tube and is difficult to fix each time...
the Programming control does not have a manual override; it is supposed to not go on if there is no water in the coffeemaker but sometimes it cuts on at the scheduled time even if the water has not been loaded in it...
It is better, and safer, to unprogram it if you do not intend for it to go on at the scheduled time.

-> Krups 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemakers with Glass Carafes

I was a little concerned about opening up shop away from home, 3 states away, and having to leave my tried and true Krups Pro Aroma behind. Granted, its an 8 year old model, but it made a great cup of coffee, and I had mastered the fairly simple interface for programming and setup.

In my search, I read a LOT of negative reviews about the new Krups product family. Really not a surprise cause even the Pro Aroma had its many quirks, but still.....the coffee. So, after reading a bunch of bad reviews on Braun, Mr Coffee, Cuisinart, and Krups coffeemakers, I figured $60 was worth the risk to plunk down on this model. My first impression when I opened the box was that the coffemaker was solid and well constructed, but that the carafe was too light and thinly formed. But after two weeks of use I really cant find anything to complain about.

Yes, the carafe is very light, but I like it. And it pours well with no drips. I havent yet attempted to program the machine cause thats not a necessity for me, but hit the "ON" button and in about 5 minutes you have a fast, hot, and extraordinarily flavored pot of coffee. And this is honestly the best coffee I've ever had from this machine, even much better than my old Pro Aroma from the same manufacturer.

I dont know how Krups does it, and I dont care, this machine is just one of the best on the market today, and probably thee best when we're talking about the quality of the end result...which is all that matters. 5 beans

In the last 3 years I've been through Cuisinart, Melitta, and the new Mr. Coffee and they were all disappointing. This is my first Krups so I didnt know what to expect but WOW, WHAT COFFEE! I dont know how they do it, but this makes the best coffee I've ever had. I havent had a problem with drips or spills others have mentioned, and I dont fiddle with the controls, just turn it on and brew a full pot in around 3-4 minutes. Fantastic!

Pros: Overall size and design is streamlined. Right or left hand pot access. Brew basket door locks in place. Water compartment door opens away from user. Once the auto brew function is set, no need to turn "on." Just remember to fill pot. "CALC" displays when pot needs to be demineralized. Cons: Little rubber feet on bottom of unit - to prevent sliding on counter did not stay on. Carafe lid not easily removable for cleaning. How long will those little lid pins last? The water level indicator tube sometimes allows an air bubble, but not a problem if you pour a premeasured amount of water. Coffee temp could be a few degrees hotter for my personal taste. Overall there is nothing that would prevent me from buying this unit again as the plusses far outweigh the annoyances of other brands.

->Lowest Price Krups 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemakers with Glass Carafes

The coffee maker looks great, and the flavor is good. However, be careful when filling the water reservoir - it's hard to see the overflow hole in the back, and you won't necessarily know you've put in too much until it is all over your countertop. During the brew cycle, you'll notice water dripping down onto the hotplate, by the sizzling and popping noises. You may be able to figure out where the water was dripping from, but we couldn't.
The filter is somewhat of a joke - it pops out of its place regularly, and the hard plastic cover really covers the filter well - not sure that the water is being adequately filtered. All-in-all, good coffee, but watch out for the quirks, and try not to pay too much for this (i.e. anything over 35=40 dollars).

->Deal Krups 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemakers with Glass Carafes

After a gazillion (happy) years with the Krups ProAroma, I decided to contemporize. Committed to staying in the Family Krups, I read bundles of FME-2 reviews and dismissed the negative, too-hard-to-program complaints, figuring that it's a coffee maker -- how hard can it be? I ordered the coffee maker, and after devoting waaay too much time to trying to understand the instruction manual, I decided to just eat the money spent and search for a different brand. But after seeing complaints of one sort or another about all brands/models, I decided to baby-step the FME-2 manual ... and now I've got it.
The automatic-on part was the trickiest, but it's not as bad as some reviewers report: if you use the auto-on, let's say, M-F, just tap the "h/min" just once after the coffee is made on Friday to deactivate the auto-on. Then (still with me?) on Sunday evening after you do the coffee/water thing, tap the "prog" button 3 times (think Kansas if it helps): you do NOT need to reset the time. It will hold the time you have already set, and you'll see 6:30 AM (or whatever) flash before your eyes as you do it. The little clock icon will light, and you're good to go.
True, the clock, itself, does not stay lit, and there is something sort of weird about not seeing the friendly glow as you waltz past the kitchen; but there's always the stove clock, cable box clock, and microwave clock all aglow to reassure you that time is still marching on in the kitchen.
And ... the coffee is great, hot, and as long as the warmer plate is on, so is the ever-so-pretty blue clock (noting "on"). If the handle on the pot holds out (it does not have the "hook over the pot top" feature that we're all used to), this seems to be yet another Krups success. (I still have to wonder, however, if the designers sat around a table deciding how to complicate the set-up process that had been so sensible on the ProAroma.)
May 2006 addendum: So much for being clever. To reactivate the automatic set time after deactivating it, tap the "prog" button 4 times, not 3: the first tap shows "PROG," the second shows the hour, the third shows the minutes, and the neglected-to-mention fourth completes the reactivation. Sorry about the error. So instead of thinking Kansas, think, um, the Beatles. Or the corners of the world. Or just try to remember it's 4 taps....

->Best Price Krups 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemakers with Glass Carafes

When it came time to get a new coffee maker, so many machines I looked at were flimsy in look and feel.

Krups has built a nice machine, quality feel and all, and I don't regret the buy. But marks for usability could sure be better, in my opinion.

In pursuit of design elegance, I suppose, there is a sparse interface consisting of a display panel and four icon-identified buttons.

The display panel is a VERY dim blue, which brightens a little when the machine is on.
When bright room lights are on, or when sunlight is streaming in the kitchen, I cannot read the display, I have to shade the display with my hand to read it.
-> The Krups would be improved by a brighter display.
-> It should have a plain old-fashioned indicator light that shows it is on.

Programming is via non-dedicated, multi function buttons.
You choose settings by pressing the same buttons for various periods and/or in specific sequences.
This isn't necessarily bad, but it means you have to dig out the manual any time you want to edit the thing.
Also, I was not, especially at first, comfortable that I was performing the task that I intended to perform.
There isn't a simple way to display what your settings are.
It is a little confusing; I do not look forward to resetting this machine every doggone savings time switch.
-> The Krups would be improved by an intuitive control setup.

You can adjust the Krups to shut down after a preset period; this feature is called "Auto Off".
If it has shut off and you want to reheat coffee that's already in the carafe, you cannot do it.
The machine senses that the reservoir is empty, indicates this status on the display, and then shuts itself off.
-> The ability to reheat would be an improvement.

You can set The Krups to do an "Auto On", which in Krups lingo means it will commence brewing at a preset time.
Typically, I load it on weekday evenings and it comes on in the morning; this is fine as I'm up at the same time each day.
On weekends, I use it manually since I'm up later usually.
You cannot, however, without reprogramming (procedural issues noted above), keep it from starting up on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
It will discover that the reservoir is empty and shut down.
-> Sensing an empty reservoir when starting a brew cycle is a good feature.
-> But, the machine should come on when it's needed, and not come on when it's not needed.
-> The Krups would be improved with a button that determines whether "Auto On" will engage.

One of the four buttons is the "1-3 Cup Flavor Setting", meant to extract full flavor from smaller quantities.
This is no doubt a nice feature, but given Krups' minimalist interface, you have to wonder why it got the full button treatment.

Lastly, when you pour coffee, it drips down the front of the carafe, making a small puddle.
You must learn to remember to place the pour spout on the edge of the cup.

->Purchase Krups 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemakers with Glass Carafes

We have had coffee makers by Krups for years, but this in the "poorest" model they have ever produced. Luckily this morning (Saturday) I got up earlier than usual and found the pot running dry. We don't set up to run automatically on the weekends. This is a real fire hazard. The problem stems from controls that are very hard to see and understand, especially for older people. The run function and the timer are on independant controls, and you must set both off instead of just one like the older models. The contributing factor is it not having an always lit LED display. It only comes on for a couple of minutes and then dims. Thus you can never see what functions are running. We also have a small puddle on the counter in the mornings where we have filled the reservoir the night before. I'm sorry I ever bought this thing and I'm done with Krups. Now I'm off to look for a replacement with a different brand. Hope this helps some of you make your decision.

Sincerely,
A very unhappy Krups coffee maker owner!

We bought this one to replace our previous, 5 year old Krups. More updated, more streamlined, and controls are now down below (our 5 year old model got ruined over time by the steam rising to the LED display). BUT, one of the buttons on this machine is malfunctioning a bit...in all fairness, I've not contacted Krups to see how they would remediate this problem.

I've used several individual-cup coffee makers over the years and decided to get a real coffee maker. After trying 3 types and being disapppointed, I settled on this one and really like it. The swing-out filter holder is easy to clean and it coffee tastes great and is made quickly. You can use this coffee pot without really worrying about programming it, just turn it on and off if you want. The water you pour in is the water that makes you coffee, there is no holding tank; there is a water gauge so you can see how much more water needs to run through before the pot is fully done. I also like the idea of a replaceable water filter in the well, I just have to remember to order a couple to have on hand, but you can use the machine without one.

I just received this product recently after sending my old Kitchen Aid Coffeemaker back to the company for the rebate check. Krups FME2 seems like a good coffeemaker, but cause I am used to the LED display of my old Kitchen Aid Coffeemaker, this Krups with the LCD backlit display is alright, but I wish it had LED. You can set the Auto-Shut-Off from 1-5 hours plus you can turn the finished beep off too, if disired. It does make great coffee. Other than the lack of LED display, this is a good coffeemaker and nice to look at too. Works great too!
